2026 Video Understanding With Large Language Models: A Survey
abstract
With the rapid growth of online video platforms and the escalating volume of video content, the need for proficient video understanding tools has increased significantly. Given the remarkable capabilities of large language models (LLMs) in language and multimodal tasks, this survey provides a detailed overview of recent advances in video understanding that harness the power of LLMs (Vid-LLMs). The emergent capabilities of Vid-LLMs are surprisingly advanced, particularly their ability for open-ended multi-granularity (abstract, temporal, and spatiotemporal) reasoning combined with common-sense knowledge, suggesting a promising path for future video understanding. We examine the unique characteristics and capabilities of Vid-LLMs, categorizing the approaches into three main types:Video Analyzer × LLM, Video Embedder × LLM, and (Analyzer + Embedder) × LLM. We identify five subtypes based on the functions of LLMs in Vid-LLMs:LLMas Summarizer,LLMas Manager,LLMas Text Decoder,LLMas Regressor, andLLMas Hidden Layer. This survey also presents a comprehensive study of the tasks, datasets, benchmarks, and evaluation methods for Vid-LLMs. Additionally, it explores the extensive applications of Vid-LLMs in various domains, highlighting their remarkable scalability and versatility in real-world video understanding challenges. Additionally, it summarizes the limitations of existing Vid-LLMs and outlines directions for future research. 2025 GaussianStyle: Gaussian Head Avatar via StyleGAN
abstract
Existing methods like Neural Radiation Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have made significant strides in facial attribute control such as facial animation and components editing, yet they struggle with fine-grained representation and scalability in dynamic head modeling. To address these limitations, we propose GaussianStyle. a novel framework that integrates the volumetric strengths of 3DGS with the powerful implicit representation of Style-GAN. The GaussianStyle preserves structural information, such as expressions and poses, using Gaussian points, while projecting the implicit volumetric representation into Style-GAN to capture high-frequency details and mitigate the over-smoothing commonly observed in neural texture rendering. Experimental outcomes indicate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in reenactment, novel view synthesis, and animation.

2025 On Path to Multimodal Generalist: General-Level and General-Bench
abstract
The Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) is currently experiencing rapid growth, driven by the advanced capabilities of language-based LLMs. Unlike their specialist predecessors, existing MLLMs are evolving towards a Multimodal Generalist paradigm. Initially limited to understanding multiple modalities, these models have advanced to not only comprehend but also generate across modalities. Their capabilities have expanded from coarse-grained to fine-grained multimodal understanding and from supporting singular modalities to accommodating a wide array of or even arbitrary modalities. To assess the capabilities of various MLLMs, a diverse array of benchmark test sets has been proposed. This leads to a critical question: Can we simply assume that higher performance across tasks indicates a stronger MLLM capability, bringing us closer to human-level AI? We argue that the answer is not as straightforward as it seems. In this project, we introduce an evaluation framework to delineate the capabilities and behaviors of current multimodal generalists. This framework, named General-Level, establishes 5-scale levels of MLLM performance and generality, offering a methodology to compare MLLMs and gauge the progress of existing systems towards more robust multimodal generalists and, ultimately, towards AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). Central to our framework is the use of Synergy as the evaluative criterion, categorizing capabilities based on whether MLLMs preserve synergy across comprehension and generation, as well as across multimodal interactions. To evaluate the comprehensive abilities of various generalists, we present a massive multimodal benchmark, General-Bench, which encompasses a broader spectrum of skills, modalities, formats, and capabilities, including over 700 tasks and 325,800 instances. The evaluation results that involve over 100 existing state-of-the-art MLLMs uncover the capability rankings of generalists, highlighting the challenges in reaching genuine AI. We expect this project to pave the way for future research on next-generation multimodal foundation models, providing a robust infrastructure to accelerate the realization of AGI. 2025 JavisGPT: A Unified Multi-modal LLM for Sounding-Video Comprehension and Generation
abstract
This paper presents JavisGPT, the first unified multimodal large language model (MLLM) for joint audio-video (JAV) comprehension and generation. JavisGPT has a concise encoder-LLM-decoder architecture, which has a SyncFusion module for spatio-temporal audio-video fusion and synchrony-aware learnable queries to bridge a pretrained JAV-DiT generator. This design enables temporally coherent video-audio understanding and generation from multimodal instructions. We design an effective three-stage training pipeline consisting of multimodal pretraining, audio-video fine-tuning, and large-scale instruction-tuning, to progressively build multimodal comprehension and generation from existing vision-language models. For instruction tuning, we construct JavisInst-Omni, a high-quality instruction dataset with over 200K GPT-4o-curated audio-video-text dialogues that cover diverse and multi-level comprehension and generation scenarios. On JAV comprehension and generation benchmarks, our experiments show that JavisGPT outperforms existing MLLMs, particularly in complex and temporally synchronized settings.

2025 GPT-4V(ision) as A Social Media Analysis Engine
abstract
Recent research has shed light on the capabilities of Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) across various general vision and language tasks. The performance of LMMs in specialized domains, such as social media, which integrates text, images, videos, and sometimes audio, remains an area of active interest. Effective analysis of such content requires models to interpret the complex interactions between different communication modalities and their influence on the conveyed message. This article explores GPT-4V(ision)’s performance in social multimedia analysis. We evaluate GPT-4V across five representative tasks: sentiment analysis, hate speech detection, fake news identification, demographic inference, and political ideology detection. Our approach includes a preliminary quantitative analysis for each task using existing benchmark datasets, followed by a review of the results and a selection of qualitative samples to demonstrate GPT-4V’s performance in multimodal social media content analysis. GPT-4V shows effectiveness in these tasks, exhibiting capabilities like joint image–text understanding, contextual and cultural awareness, and commonsense knowledge application. However, challenges persist, including struggles with multilingual social multimedia comprehension and difficulty in adapting to the latest social media trends. It also sometimes generates incorrect information about evolving knowledge of celebrities and politicians. This preliminary study aims to inform further research across disciplines, particularly in computational social science and social media studies. The findings highlight the potential of LMMs to enhance our understanding of social media content and its users through multimodal analysis. 2023 Rethinking Alignment and Uniformity in Unsupervised Image Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Unsupervised image segmentation aims to match low-level visual features with semantic-level representations without outer supervision. In this paper, we address the critical properties from the view of feature alignments and feature uniformity for UISS models. We also make a comparison between UISS and image-wise representation learning. Based on the analysis, we argue that the existing MI-based methods in UISS suffer from representation collapse. By this, we proposed a robust network called Semantic Attention Network(SAN), in which a new module Semantic Attention(SEAT) is proposed to generate pixel-wise and semantic features dynamically. Experimental results on multiple semantic segmentation benchmarks show that our unsupervised segmentation framework specializes in catching semantic representations, which outperforms all the unpretrained and even several pretrained methods.

2023 Feature Alignment and Uniformity for Test Time Adaptation
abstract
Test time adaptation (TTA) aims to adapt deep neural networks when receiving out of distribution test domain samples. In this setting, the model can only access online unlabeled test samples and pretrained models on the training domains. We first address TTA as a feature revision problem due to the domain gap between source domains and target domains. After that, we follow the two measurements alignment and uniformity to discuss the test time feature revision. For test time feature uniformity, we propose a test time self-distillation strategy to guarantee the consistency of uniformity between representations of the current batch and all the previous batches. For test time feature alignment, we propose a memorized spatial local clustering strategy to align the representations among the neighborhood samples for the upcoming batch. To deal with the common noisy label problem, we propound the entropy and consistency filters to select and drop the possible noisy labels. To prove the scalability and efficacy of our method, we conduct experiments on four domain generalization bench marks and four medical image segmentation tasks with various backbones. Experiment results show that our method not only improves baseline stably but also outperforms existing state-of-the-art test time adaptation methods.

2023 Prototype Knowledge Distillation for Medical Segmentation with Missing Modality
abstract
Multi-modality medical imaging is crucial in clinical treatment as it can provide complementary information for medical image segmentation. However, collecting multi-modal data in clinical is difficult due to the limitation of the scan time and other clinical situations. As such, it is clinically meaningful to develop an image segmentation paradigm to handle this missing modality problem. In this paper, we propose a prototype knowledge distillation (ProtoKD) method to tackle the challenging problem, especially for the toughest scenario when only single modal data can be accessed. Specifically, our ProtoKD can not only distillate the pixel-wise knowledge of multi-modality data to single-modality data but also transfer intra-class and inter-class feature variations, such that the student model could learn more robust feature representation from the teacher model and inference with only one single modality data. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on BraTS benchmark.

2023 Cross Contrasting Feature Perturbation for Domain Generalization
abstract
Domain generalization (DG) aims to learn a robust model from source domains that generalize well on unseen target domains. Recent studies focus on generating novel domain samples or features to diversify distributions complementary to source domains. Yet, these approaches can hardly deal with the restriction that the samples synthesized from various domains can cause semantic distortion. In this paper, we propose an online one-stage Cross Contrasting Feature Perturbation (CCFP) framework to simulate domain shift by generating perturbed features in the latent space while regularizing the model prediction against domain shift. Different from the previous fixed synthesizing strategy, we design modules with learnable feature perturbations and semantic consistency constraints. In contrast to prior work, our method does not use any generative-based models or domain labels. We conduct extensive experiments on a standard DomainBed benchmark with a strict evaluation protocol for a fair comparison. Comprehensive experiments show that our method outperforms the previous state-of-the-art, and quantitative analyses illustrate that our approach can alleviate the domain shift problem in out-of-distribution (OOD) scenarios. https://github.com/hackmebroo/CCFP
