2018 Managing Computer-Assisted Detection System Based on Transfer Learning with Negative Transfer Inhibition
abstract
The reading workload for radiologists is increasing because the numbers of examinations and images per examination are increasing due to the technical progress on imaging modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. A computer-assisted detection (CAD) system based on machine learning is expected to assist radiologists. The preliminary results of a multi-institutional study indicate that the performance of the CAD system for each institution improved using training data of other institutions. This indicates that transfer learning may be useful for developing the CAD systems among multiple institutions. In this paper, we focus on transfer learning without sharing training data due to the need to protect personal information in each institution. Moreover, we raise a problem of negative transfer in CAD system and propose an algorithm for inhibiting negative transfer. Our algorithm provides a theoretical guarantee for managing CAD software in terms of transfer learning and exhibits experimentally better performance compared to that of the current algorithm in cerebral aneurysm detection.

2008 Multi-Dimensional Image Data Viewer with Flexible Extension Capability and its Application in Computer-Based Medical Systems
abstract
Despite wide use of multi-dimensional image data in clinical environment, current image reading by radiologists is mostly performed based on 2D display of PACS terminal. Various types of commercial-based medical workstations are provided to enhance image reading with 3D visualization and other diagnostic support, but they are not enough for researches of new image analysis techniques. In this short paper, a multi-dimensional image viewer system, VOLUME-ONE, is described and several extension modules such as diffusion MRI analysis are also shown with examples of analysis results in clinical research.

2008 A Variational Method for Geometric Regularization of Vascular Segmentation in Medical Images
abstract
In this paper, a level-set-based geometric regularization method is proposed which has the ability to estimate the local orientation of the evolving front and utilize it as shape induced information for anisotropic propagation. We show that preserving anisotropic fronts can improve elongations of the extracted structures, while minimizing the risk of leakage. To that end, for an evolving front using its shape-offset level-set representation, a novel energy functional is defined. It is shown that constrained optimization of this functional results in an anisotropic expansion flow which is usefull for vessel segmentation. We have validated our method using synthetic data sets, 2-D retinal angiogram images and magnetic resonance angiography volumetric data sets. A comparison has been made with two state-of-the-art vessel segmentation methods. Quantitative results, as well as qualitative comparisons of segmentations, indicate that our regularization method is a promising tool to improve the efficiency of both techniques.

2002 Computerized Detection of Pulmonary Embolism in Spiral CT Angiography Based on Volumetric Image Analysis
abstract
A fully automated method for computerized detection of pulmonary embolism in spiral computed tomography angiography was developed based on volumetric image analysis. The detection method is based on segmentation of pulmonary vessels to limit the search space, and analysis of several three-dimensional features inside segmented vessel volume. The features utilized are vascular size, local contrast based on mathematical morphology, degree of curvilinearity based on second derivatives, and geometric features such as volume and length. Detection results were obtained for 19 clinical data sets and the performance of the method was evaluated. Using the number and locations of thrombi diagnosed by radiologists as the gold standard, 100% sensitivity was achieved with 7.7 false positives per case, and 85% sensitivity was obtained with 2.6 false positives. For identification of all the positive cases as positive, i.e., detection of at least one thrombus per positive case, 1.9 false positives per case were obtained. These preliminary results suggest that the method has potential for fully automated detection of pulmonary embolism.
