| 2024 | DualRC: A Dual-Resolution Learning Framework With Neighbourhood Consensus for Visual CorrespondencesabstractWe address the problem of establishing accurate correspondences between two images. We present a flexible framework that can easily adapt to both geometric and semantic matching. Our contribution consists of three parts. Firstly, we propose an end-to-end trainable framework that uses the coarse-to-fine matching strategy to accurately find the correspondences. We generate feature maps in two levels of resolution, enforce the neighbourhood consensus constraint on the coarse feature maps by 4D convolutions and use the resulting correlation map to regulate the matches from the fine feature maps. Secondly, we present three variants of the model with different focuses. Namely, a universal correspondence model named DualRC that is suitable for both geometric and semantic matching, an efficient model named DualRC-L tailored for geometric matching with a lightweight neighbourhood consensus module that significantly accelerates the pipeline for high-resolution input images, and the DualRC-D model in which we propose a novel dynamically adaptive neighbourhood consensus module (DyANC) that dynamically selects the most suitable non-isotropic 4D convolutional kernels with the proper neighbourhood size to account for the scale variation. Last, we thoroughly experiment on public benchmarks for both geometric and semantic matching, showing superior performance in both cases. | 2020 | Correspondence Networks With Adaptive Neighbourhood ConsensusabstractIn this paper, we tackle the task of establishing dense visual correspondences between images containing objects of the same category. This is a challenging task due to large intra-class variations and a lack of dense pixel level annotations. We propose a convolutional neural network architecture, called adaptive neighbourhood consensus network (ANC-Net), that can be trained end-to-end with sparse key-point annotations, to handle this challenge. At the core of ANC-Net is our proposed non-isotropic 4D convolution kernel, which forms the building block for the adaptive neighbourhood consensus module for robust matching. We also introduce a simple and efficient multi-scale self-similarity module in ANC-Net to make the learned feature robust to intra-class variations. Furthermore, we propose a novel orthogonal loss that can enforce the one-to-one matching constraint. We thoroughly evaluate the effectiveness of our method on various benchmarks, where it substantially outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Shuda Li, Kai Han 0001, Theo W. | 2020 | Dual-Resolution Correspondence NetworksabstractWe tackle the problem of establishing dense pixel-wise correspondences between a pair of images. In this work, we introduce Dual-Resolution Correspondence Networks (DualRC-Net), to obtain pixel-wise correspondences in a coarse-to-fine manner. DualRC-Net extracts both coarse- and fine- resolution feature maps. The coarse maps are used to produce a full but coarse 4D correlation tensor, which is then refined by a learnable neighbourhood consensus module. The fine-resolution feature maps are used to obtain the final dense correspondences guided by the refined coarse 4D correlation tensor. The selected coarse-resolution matching scores allow the fine-resolution features to focus only on a limited number of possible matches with high confidence. In this way, DualRC-Net dramatically increases matching reliability and localisation accuracy, while avoiding to apply the expensive 4D convolution kernels on fine-resolution feature maps. We comprehensively evaluate our method on large-scale public benchmarks including HPatches, InLoc, and Aachen Day-Night. It achieves state-of-the-art results on all of them. | 2020 | FlowNet3D++: Geometric Losses For Deep Scene Flow EstimationabstractWe present FlowNet3D++, a deep scene flow estimation network. Inspired by classical methods, FlowNet3D++ incorporates geometric constraints in the form of point-toplane distance and angular alignment between individual vectors in the flow field, into FlowNet3D [21]. We demonstrate that the addition of these geometric loss terms improves the previous state-of-art FlowNet3D accuracy from 57.85% to 63.43%. To further demonstrate the effectiveness of our geometric constraints, we propose a benchmark for flow estimation on the task of dynamic 3D reconstruction, thus providing a more holistic and practical measure of performance than the breakdown of individual metrics previously used to evaluate scene flow. This is made possible through the contribution of a novel pipeline to integrate point-based scene flow predictions into a global dense volume. FlowNet3D++ achieves up to a 15.0% reduction in reconstruction error over FlowNet3D, and up to a 35.2% improvement over KillingFusion [32] alone. We will release our scene flow estimation code later. | 2016 | HDRFusion: HDR SLAM Using a Low-Cost Auto-Exposure RGB-D SensorabstractMost dense RGB/RGB-D SLAM systems require the brightness of 3-D points observed from different viewpoints to be constant. However, in reality, this assumption is difficult to meet even when the surface is Lambertian and illumination is static. One cause is that most cameras automatically tune exposure to adapt to the wide dynamic range of scene radiance, violating the brightness assumption. We describe a novel system - HDRFusion - which turns this apparent drawback into an advantage by fusing LDR frames into an HDR textured volume using a standard RGB-D sensor with auto-exposure (AE) enabled. The key contribution is the use of a normalised metric for frame alignment which is invariant to changes in exposure time. This enables robust tracking in frame-to-model mode and also compensates the exposure accurately so that HDR texture, free of artefacts, can be generated online. We demonstrate that the tracking robustness and accuracy is greatly improved by the approach and that radiance maps can be generated with far greater dynamic range of scene radiance. | 2016 | Absolute pose estimation using multiple forms of correspondences from RGB-D framesabstractWe describe a new approach to absolute pose estimation from noisy and outlier contaminated matching point sets for RGB-D sensors. We show that by integrating multiple forms of correspondence based on 2-D and 3-D points and surface normals gives more precise, accurate and robust pose estimates. This is because it gives more constraints than using one form alone and increases the available measurements, especially when dealing with sparse matching sets. We demonstrate the approach by incorporating it within a RANSAC algorithm and introduce a novel direct least-square approach to calculate pose estimates. Results from experiments on synthetic and real data demonstrate improved performance over existing methods. Shuda Li, Andrew Calway |

| 2015 | RGBD relocalisation using pairwise geometry and concise key point setsabstractWe describe a novel RGBD relocalisation algorithm based on key point matching. It combines two components. First, a graph matching algorithm which takes into account the pairwise 3-D geometry amongst the key points, giving robust relocalisation. Second, a point selection process which provides an even distribution of the ‘most matchable’ points across the scene based on non-maximum suppression within voxels of a volumetric grid. This ensures a bounded set of matchable key points which enables tractable and scalable graph matching at frame rate. We present evaluations using a public dataset and our own more difficult dataset containing large pose changes, fast motion and non-stationary objects. It is shown that the method significantly out performs state-of-the-art methods. Shuda Li, Andrew Calway |

| 2008 | Using Illumination Estimated from Silhouettes to Carve Surface Details on Visual HullabstractThis paper deals with the problems of scene illumination estimation and shape recovery from an image sequence of a smooth textureless object. A novel method that exploits the surface points estimated from the silhouettes for recovering the scene illumination is introduced. Those surface points are acquired by a dual space approach and filtered according to their rank errors. Selected surface points allow a direct closed-form solution of illumination. In the mesh evolution step, an algorithm for optimizing the visual hull mesh is developed. It evolves the mesh by iteratively estimating both the surface normal and depth that maximize the photometric consistency across the sequence. Compared with previous work which optimizes the mesh by estimating the surface normal only, the proposed method shows better convergence and can recover better surface details, especially when concavities are deep and sharp. 1 Shuda Li, Kwan-Yee Kenneth Wong, Dirk Schnieders |
