| 2020 | A novel strategy for balancing the workload of industrial lines based on a genetic algorithmabstractOne major problem in industrial automation is the workload balancing problem. It consists of making the robots or, more generally, the machines, involved in the assembly process to work exactly the same, either by picking and placing the same number of pieces or by having the same number of operational cycles. This paper presents a novel strategy for solving such a problem by means of an evolutionary algorithm. The specific application of this strategy is to balance the workload of a pick-and-place process developed in the facilities of the industrial company Fameccanica Spa Data within the framework of an industrial project between the company and our research group. The novelties concerning the state-of-the-art contributions are: (1) instead of using an explicit fitness function, the candidate solutions at each iteration are evaluated by using a simulation of the entire process; (2) the parameters optimized are the velocity and acceleration of the robots involved in the line and (3) the strategy includes an algorithm for distributing the workload between the robots during the process. | 2015 | Experiments on behavioral coordinated control of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle manipulator systemabstractThis work tackles the problem of controlling an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle equipped with a robotic Manipulator and it has been developed within the framework of the EU-funded ARCAS (Aerial Robotics Cooperative Assembly System) project. A behavioral control, based on the Null Space-based Behavioral (NSB) paradigm, is proposed to tackle the coordination between the arm and vehicle motions. To this aim, a set of basic functionalities (called elementary behaviors) are designed and combined in a priority order to attain complex tasks (called compound behaviors). The proposed controller has been experimentally validated on a multirotor aircraft with an attached 6 Degree of Freedoms manipulator. Two experimental case studies, involving several compound behaviors, have been reported and the results show the effectiveness of the approach. | 2015 | Longitudinal and lateral slip control of autonomous wheeled mobile robot for trajectory trackingabstractThis research formulates a path-following control problem subjected to wheel slippage and skid and solves it using a logic-based control scheme for a wheeled mobile robot (WMR). The novelty of the proposed scheme lies in its methodology that considers both longitudinal and lateral slip components. Based on the derived slip model, the controller for longitudinal motion slip has been synthesized. Various control parameters have been studied to investigate their effects on the performance of the controller resulting in selection of their optimum values. The designed controller for lateral slip or skid is based on the proposed side friction model and skid check condition. Considering a car-like WMR, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme. The robot successfully followed the desired circular trajectory in the presence of wheel slippage and skid. This research finds its potential in various applications involving WMR navigation and control. Hamza Khan 0004, Jamshed Iqbal, Khelifa Baizid, Teresa Zielinska |

| 2010 | Genetic Algorithms based method for time optimization in robotized siteabstractIndustrial implementation of robots is to perform the assigned tasks in the minimum possible time in the cycle comes up to increase productivity and reduce the cost. The cycle time is strongly linked to the robot trajectory cycle to the task. However, the optimization of the robot trajectory cycle the robot visited a set of points which represent the robotics task. Similar to persons in traveling the robot execute the task into shorter time if has a shorter path. However the trajectory cycle of the robot is strongly related to the displacement in coordinate space rather than operational space. In fact, the shorter distance between two task points is the shorter distance between two configurations. Since robot has different configurations in each task point the minimum trajectory should be chosen between each successive configuration. However the order of visiting the task point also affects the trajectory distance. Moreover the relative robot position to the task also has a trivial effect on the task time. In this work we develop a method to optimize the order of visiting the task point taking into consideration the robot configuration and the placement of the robot in the robotized site. Mainly, this method is based on Genetic Algorithms and it takes into consideration the multiplicity solutions of the robot Inverse Kinematics Model (IKM), the task point visit order and the placement of robot at the same time. | 2008 | Standardization and Integration in Robotics: Case of Virtual Reality ToolsabstractRobotics needs realistic simulators and environments to display not only physical interactions between robots and the environment, but also more and more complex processes. Sensing procedures, communications and other processes like cognitive reasoning may be first run on adapted and competitive simulation platforms to deal with optimal design. Virtual reality (VR) left the ghetto of visual rendering tool to become a more complete mean to handle basic simulation problems and to enable aggregation of complex functions for complex interactions. VR and robotics have met through Teleoperation. Historically, the first teleoperation systems were used as interfaces to control remotely robots by providing input tools and sensory feedback information. With technological improvements, VR shifted to be the main kernel for first, studies on advanced robotics systems studies like bio-inspired robots behavior, multi-robot systems, etc., and second, to provide advanced multi-modal interfaces for real time interactions with a useful level of abstraction. We present in this paper some basic robotics problems and the way VR can solve them. The first part of this paper discuss about the benefits of standardization and VR for complex robots systems. Then, we present some existing solutions and we analyze their drawbacks and advantages. Finally, we introduce an application where we take advantage of those features, in terms of efficiency in the development cycle and of reusability.
