2014 The Applicability of Spatiotemporal Oriented Energy Features to Region Tracking
abstract
This paper proposes the novel application of an uncommonly rich feature representation to the domain of visual tracking. The proposed representation for tracking models both the spatial structure and dynamics of a target in a unified fashion, while simultaneously offering robustness to illumination variations. Specifically, the proposed feature is derived from spatiotemporal energy measurements that are computed by filtering in 3D, (x, y, t), image spacetime. These spatiotemporal energy measurements capture the underlying local spacetime orientation structure of the target across multiple scales. The breadth of applicability of these features within the field of visual tracking is demonstrated by their instantiation within three disparate tracking paradigms that are representative of the various basic types of region trackers in the field. Instantiation within these three tracking paradigms requires that the raw oriented energy measurements be post-processed using different methodologies that range from histogram accumulation to the identity transform. Qualitative and quantitative empirical evaluation on a challenging suite of videos demonstrates the strength and applicability of the proposed representation to tracking, as it outperforms other commonly-used features across all tracking paradigms. Moreover, it is shown that overall high tracking accuracy can be obtained with this proposed representation, as spatiotemporal oriented energy instantiations are shown to outperform several recent, state-of-the-art trackers.

2013 Compositional Models for Video Event Detection: A Multiple Kernel Learning Latent Variable Approach
abstract
We present a compositional model for video event detection. A video is modeled using a collection of both global and segment-level features and kernel functions are employed for similarity comparisons. The locations of salient, discriminative video segments are treated as a latent variable, allowing the model to explicitly ignore portions of the video that are unimportant for classification. A novel, multiple kernel learning (MKL) latent support vector machine (SVM) is defined, that is used to combine and re-weight multiple feature types in a principled fashion while simultaneously operating within the latent variable framework. The compositional nature of the proposed model allows it to respond directly to the challenges of temporal clutter and intra-class variation, which are prevalent in unconstrained internet videos. Experimental results on the TRECVID Multimedia Event Detection 2011 (MED11) dataset demonstrate the efficacy of the method.

2013 Segmental multi-way local pooling for video recognition
abstract
In this work, we address the problem of complex event detection on unconstrained videos. We introduce a novel multi-way feature pooling approach which leverages segment-level information. The approach is simple and widely applicable to diverse audio-visual features. Our approach uses a set of clusters discovered via unsupervised clustering of segment-level features. Depending on feature characteristics, not only scene-based clusters but also motion/audio-based clusters can be incorporated. Then, every video is represented with multiple descriptors, where each descriptor is designed to relate to one of the pre-built clusters. For classification, intersection kernel SVMs are used where the kernel is obtained by combining multiple kernels computed from corresponding per-cluster descriptor pairs. Evaluation on TRECVID'11 MED dataset shows a significant improvement by the proposed approach beyond the state-of-the-art.

2013 Efficient video quality assessment based on spacetime texture representation
abstract
Most existing video quality metrics measure temporal distortions based on optical-flow estimation, which typically has limited descriptive power of visual dynamics and low efficiency. This paper presents a unified and efficient framework to measure temporal distortions based on a spacetime texture representation of motion. We first propose an effective motion-tuning scheme to capture temporal distortions along motion trajectories by exploiting the distributive characteristic of the spacetime texture. Then we reuse the motion descriptors to build a self-information based spatiotemporal saliency model to guide the spatial pooling. At last, a comprehensive quality metric is developed by combining the temporal distortion measure with spatial distortion measure. Our method demonstrates high efficiency and excellent correlation with the human perception of video quality.

2013 Action Spotting and Recognition Based on a Spatiotemporal Orientation Analysis
abstract
This paper provides a unified framework for the interrelated topics of action spotting, the spatiotemporal detection and localization of human actions in video, and action recognition, the classification of a given video into one of several predefined categories. A novel compact local descriptor of video dynamics in the context of action spotting and recognition is introduced based on visual spacetime oriented energy measurements. This descriptor is efficiently computed directly from raw image intensity data and thereby forgoes the problems typically associated with flow-based features. Importantly, the descriptor allows for the comparison of the underlying dynamics of two spacetime video segments irrespective of spatial appearance, such as differences induced by clothing, and with robustness to clutter. An associated similarity measure is introduced that admits efficient exhaustive search for an action template, derived from a single exemplar video, across candidate video sequences. The general approach presented for action spotting and recognition is amenable to efficient implementation, which is deemed critical for many important applications. For action spotting, details of a real-time GPU-based instantiation of the proposed approach are provided. Empirical evaluation of both action spotting and action recognition on challenging datasets suggests the efficacy of the proposed approach, with state-of-the-art performance documented on standard datasets.

abstract
This paper addresses action spotting, the spatiotemporal detection and localization of human actions in video. A novel compact local descriptor of video dynamics in the context of action spotting is introduced based on visual spacetime oriented energy measurements. This descriptor is efficiently computed directly from raw image intensity data and thereby forgoes the problems typically associated with flow-based features. An important aspect of the descriptor is that it allows for the comparison of the underlying dynamics of two spacetime video segments irrespective of spatial appearance, such as differences induced by clothing, and with robustness to clutter. An associated similarity measure is introduced that admits efficient exhaustive search for an action template across candidate video sequences. Empirical evaluation of the approach on a set of challenging natural videos suggests its efficacy.

2008 A framework of spatio-temporal analysis for video surveillance
abstract
This paper presents a video surveillance system that is capable of detecting and classifying moving targets in real-time. The system extracts moving targets from a video stream and classifies them into predefined categories according to their spatiotemporal properties. Classification of the moving targets is completed via a combination of a temporal boosted classifier and spatiotemporal “motion energy” analysis. We illustrate that a temporal boosted classifier can be designed that successfully recognizes five object categories: person(s), bicycle, motorcycle, vehicle, and person with umbrella. The proposed temporal boosted classifier has the unique ability to improve weak classifiers by allowing them to make use of previous information when evaluating the current frame. In addition, we demonstrate a method to further process targets in the “person(s)” category to determine if they are single moving individuals or crowds. It is shown that this challenging task of moving crowd recognition can be effectively performed using spatiotemporal motion energies.

2008 Spatiotemporal Motion Analysis for the Detection and Classification of Moving Targets
abstract
This paper presents a video surveillance system in the environment of a stationary camera that can extract moving targets from a video stream in real time and classify them into predefined categories according to their spatiotemporal properties. Targets are detected by computing the pixel-wise difference between consecutive frames, and then classified with a temporally boosted classifier and ldquospatiotemporal-oriented energyrdquo analysis. We demonstrate that the proposed classifier can successfully recognize five types of objects: a person, a bicycle, a motorcycle, a vehicle, and a person with an umbrella. In addition, we process targets that do not match any of the AdaBoost-based classifier's categories by using a secondary classification module that categorizes such targets as crowds of individuals or non-crowds. We show that the above classification task can be performed effectively by analyzing a target's spatiotemporal-oriented energies, which provide a rich description of the target's spatial and dynamic features. Our experiment results demonstrate that the proposed system is extremely effective in recognizing all predefined object classes.
