2026 Janus Streamer: A Scalable WebRTC Media Streaming Server
abstract
Janus Gateway supports WebRTC streaming for real-time video and audio delivery over the Web, but suffers from scalability limitations. It adopts a modular architecture in which the core and plugins operate on separate threads. This design leads to performance degradation, as packets must traverse queues from the plugin threads to the core thread. To mitigate this inefficiency, we propose Janus Streamer, an enhanced streaming system that improves Janus Gateway’s producer-consumer model. Janus Streamer provides a direct packet transmission interface for plugins and optimizes it to enhance performance. Experimental results show that Janus Streamer achieves a 3.6x improvement in throughput and a 37% reduction in CPU usage, while maintaining comparable Quality of Experience (QoE). Furthermore, it outperforms Janus Gateway on a single CPU core, achieving throughput improvements ranging from 3.1x to 5.7x across varying media bitrates. These findings underscore Janus Streamer’s capacity to support large-scale media streaming, and suggest techniques broadly applicable to other media transmission systems.

2025 ZRAID: Leveraging Zone Random Write Area (ZRWA) for Alleviating Partial Parity Tax in ZNS RAID
abstract
The Zoned Namespace (ZNS) SSD is an innovative technology that aims to mitigate the block interface tax associated with conventional SSDs. However, constructing a RAID system using ZNS SSDs presents a significant challenge in managing partial parity for incomplete stripes. Previous research permanently logs partial parity in a limited number of reserved zones, which not only creates bottlenecks in throughput but also exacerbates write amplification, thereby reducing the device's lifetime. We refer to these inefficiencies as the partial parity tax.
