| 2025 | Multi-Device Experience With Peer-to-Peer Connectivity in IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8)abstractThe increasing demand for high-performance wireless communication, due to emerging applications such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and Internet-of-Things (IoT), has highlighted the need for enhanced Peer-to-Peer (P2P) communication in Wi-Fi networks. P2P communication, often implemented through technologies like Wi-Fi Direct and Wi-Fi Aware, plays a crucial role in enabling seamless device-to-device interaction. This paper explores two significant enhancements for improving P2P communication: enhancing base-channel P2P through the optimization of TXOP sharing for P2P groups, and improving off-channel P2P through multi-AP coordination for channel advertisement. First, we examine the enhancement of base-channel P2P communication by introducing a refined transmission opportunity (TXOP) sharing mechanism, where an AP allocates portions of its TXOP to P2P devices within a group. This allocation ensures that devices can transmit data within a controlled, synchronized framework, thereby reducing contention and improving overall throughput. Furthermore, the proposed improvements enable devices to efficiently share resources based on group-level needs, supporting latency-sensitive applications such as real-time media streaming. Second, we address the challenges of off-channel P2P communication in OBSS (Overlapping Basic Service Set) environments, where interference from neighboring networks can severely affect performance. Through multi-AP coordination, APs can advertise recommended P2P channels that minimize overlap with infrastructure operations, thereby providing cleaner and more reliable channels for P2P communication. In addition, this coordination also facilitates faster setup and more efficient operation of P2P links. Rubayet Shafin Bradley Shafin, Inaki Val, Peshal Nayak, Vishnu V. | 2024 | WiDRa: Enabling Millimeter-Level Differential Ranging Accuracy in Wi-Fi Using Carrier PhaseabstractAlthough Wi-Fi is an ideal technology for many ranging applications, the performance of current methods is limited by the system bandwidth, leading to low accuracy of ~1 m. For many applications, measuring differential range, viz., the change in the range between adjacent measurements, is sufficient. Correspondingly, this work proposes WiDRa - a Wi-Fi based Differential Ranging solution that provides differential range estimates by using the sum-carrier-phase information. The proposed method is not limited by system bandwidth and can track range changes even smaller than the carrier wavelength. The proposed method is first theoretically justified, while taking into consideration the various hardware impairments affecting Wi-Fi chips. In the process, methods to isolate the sum-carrier phase from the hardware impairments are proposed. Extensive simulation results show that WiDRa can achieve a differential range estimation root-mean-square-error (RMSE) of$\approx 1$mm in channels with a Rician-factor$\geq 7$(a$100 \times $improvement to existing methods). The proposed methods are also validated on off-the-shelf Wi-Fi hardware to demonstrate feasibility, where they achieve an RMSE of <1 mm in the differential range. Finally, limitations of current investigation and future directions of exploration are suggested, to further tap into the potential of WiDRa. Vishnu V. | 2016 | Spatial-crowd: A big data framework for efficient data visualizationabstractAnalyzing and visualizing large datasets generated by real-time spatio-temporal activities (e.g. vehicle mobility or large crowd movement) are a very challenging task. Recursive delays both at middleware and front end applications limit the of usefulness of the real-time analysis. In this paper, we present a framework “Spatial-Crowd” that first handles spatial-temporal data acquisition and processing by scaling up the middleware components and its infrastructure. Then, it enables filtering, fixing, enriching and summarising the acquired dataset, readily available for client interfaces which usually are not scalable or built to manage such large datasets. This framework follows published subscriber model and allows users to subscribe to aggregated data streams instead of requesting data in real time. The framework is tested with data generated by a very large simulated dataset and performance showed a significant data reduction on the client side to enhance data visualisation. | 2015 | A constraint-aware optimized path recommender in a crowdsourced environmentabstractRecommending an optimized path for a large crowd poses a unique challenge to existing routing algorithms due to the interactions between users and the dynamic changes over road networks. Industries, researchers and end users show an enormous interest in crowdsourced data comprising social networks and user-generated content to remain updated with their concerns. In this paper, we present a data collection framework that helps users to find optimized routes in a dynamic environment. We have developed a data collection framework to collect dynamic road conditions via a set of location-based services to support a very large Hajj crowd by capturing their locations using smartphones. We also collect geotagged social network data that provides more details about road conditions. The system leverages geotagged crowdsourced information to identify constraints such as accidents, congestions, and roadblocks. Moreover, by continuously collecting real-time geotagged data of moving users, the system can also find the flow of traffic and road conditions. We propose a spatial grid index to compute the optimized path, and to identify the affected users within impact zones. The plan is to test the whole application and back-end server during Hajj 2016, where over three million pilgrims from all over the world gather to perform their rituals. | 2015 | A spatio-temporal multimedia big data framework for a large crowdabstractCrowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals. | 2015 | Semantic multimedia-enhanced spatio-temporal queries in a crowdsourced environmentabstractSocial networks, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, provide intuitive ways to share a variety of information including geotagged multimedia data within users' communities of interest (COI) or publicly in real-time. Real-time geotagged multimedia data can provide semantics to conventional spatial queries in order to enrich the user navigation experience. In this paper, we introduce a mechanism to process spatio-temporal queries by leveraging geotagged multimedia data such as images, audio, video, and text, in order to add semantics to the conventional queries. Our framework collects, stores, and spatially tags multimedia data shared by users through social networks or through our developed mobile application. The system then uses such data in order to enhance the conventional routing services by resolving existing usability issues and by providing semantics to the routes in terms of enriched points of interest while taking dynamic road conditions into account. A proof of concept of the system will be demonstrated with the following spatio-temporal queries on road networks: 1) multimedia-enhanced shortest path queries; 2) multimedia-enhanced k-nearest neighbor queries; and 3) multimedia-enhanced range queries. Finally, a novel technique for finding lost individuals using geotagged multimedia data is also introduced. | 2015 | A Multi-sensory Gesture-Based Login EnvironmentabstractLogging on to a system using a conventional keyboard may not be feasible in certain environments, such as, in a surgical operation theatre or in an industrial manufacturing facility. We have developed a multi-sensory gesture based login system that allows a user to access secure information using body gestures. The system can be configured to use different types of gestures according to the type of sensors available to the user. We have proposed a simple scheme to represent all alphanumeric characters required for password entry as gestures within the multi-sensory environment. Our scheme is scalable enough to support sensors that detect a large number of gestures to those that can only accept a few. This allows the system to be used in a variety of situations such as usage by disabled persons with limited ability to perform gestures. We are in the midst of deploying our developed system in a clinical environment. Ahmad M. Qamar, Abdullah Murad, Mohamed Abdur Rahman 0001, Faizan Ur Rehman, Akhlaq Ahmad, Bilal Sadiq, Saleh M. | 2014 | A framework for crowd-sourced data collection and context-aware services in Hajj and UmrahabstractWe propose a context aware framework that offers a set of cloud-based services to support a very large Hajj and Umrah crowd by capturing their contexts using smartphones. The proposed framework captures the individual's context, provides a set of adapted services, and allows being in touch with a subset of one's community of interest. We leverage the spatiotemporal sensory data captured by our framework to define users' contexts for optimized services. Our proposed framework is also envisioned to assist the Hajj and Umrah authorities to (1) improve Hajj & Umrah documentation, (2) improve Hajj organization through better understanding of pilgrims' (individual and crowd) spatial and temporal behavior and needs, and (3) protect pilgrims' environment through environmental monitoring. In particular, the developed methods, techniques, and algorithms will support the pilgrimage quality of experience. We have tested our system through end-user subjects and due to apply for the upcoming Hajj events. We present our implementation details and the general impression of end users about our system. | 2013 | Polynomial-complexity, low-delay scheduling for SCFDMA-based wireless uplink networksabstractUplink scheduling/resource allocation under the single-carrier FDMA constraint is investigated, taking into account the queuing dynamics at the transmitters. Under the single-carrier constraint, the problem of MaxWeight scheduling, as well as that of determining if a given number of packets can be served from all the users, are shown to be NP-complete. Finally, a matching-based scheduling algorithm is presented that requires only a polynomial number of computations per timeslot, and in the case of a system with large bandwidth and user population, provably provides a good delay (small-queue) performance, even under the single-carrier constraint. In summary, the results in first part of the paper support the recent push to remove SCFDMA from the Standards, whereas those in the second part present a way of working around the single-carrier constraint if it remains in the Standards. | 2011 | Delay-optimal opportunistic scheduling and approximations: the log ruleabstractThis paper considers the design of multiuser opportunistic packet schedulers for users sharing a time-varying wireless channel from performance and robustness points of view. For a simplified model falling in the classical Markov decision process framework, we numerically compute and characterize mean-delay-optimal scheduling policies. The computed policies exhibit radial sum-rate monotonicity: As users' queues grow linearly, the scheduler allocates service in a manner that deemphasizes the balancing of unequal queues in favor of maximizing current system throughput (being opportunistic). This is in sharp contrast to previously proposed throughput-optimal policies, e.g., Exp rule and MaxWeight (with any positive exponent of queue length). In order to meet performance and robustness objectives, we propose a new class of policies, called the Log rule, that are radial sum-rate monotone (RSM) and provably throughput-optimal. In fact, it can also be shown that an RSM policy minimizes the asymptotic probability of sum-queue overflow. We use extensive simulations to explore various possible design objectives for opportunistic schedulers. When users see heterogenous channels, we find that emphasizing queue balancing, e.g., Exp rule and MaxWeight, may excessively compromise the overall delay. Finally, we discuss approaches to implement the proposed policies for scheduling and resource allocation in OFDMA-based multichannel systems. Bilal Sadiq, Seungjun Baek 0001, Gustavo de Veciana |

| 2010 | Large deviations sum-queue optimality of a radial sum-rate monotone opportunistic schedulerabstractA centralized wireless system is considered that is serving a fixed set of users with time varying channel capacities. An opportunistic scheduling rule in this context selects a user (or users) to serve based on the current channel state and user queues. Unless the user traffic is symmetric and/or the underlying capacity region a polymatroid, little is known concerning how performance optimal schedulers should tradeoffmaximizing current service rate(being opportunistic) versusbalancing unequal queues(enhancing user-diversity to enable future high service rate opportunities). By contrast, with currently proposed opportunistic schedulers, e.g., MaxWeight and Exp Rule, a radial sum-rate monotonic (RSM) scheduler de-emphasizes queue-balancing in favor of greedily maximizing the system service rate as the queue-lengths are scaled up linearly. In this paper, it is shown that an RSM opportunistic scheduler, p-Log Rule, is not only throughput-optimal, but also maximizes the asymptotic exponential decay rate of the sum-queue distribution for a two-queue system. The result complements existing optimality results for opportunistic scheduling and point to RSM schedulers as a good design choice given the need for robustness in wireless systems with both heterogeneity and high degree of uncertainty. | 2009 | Delay-Optimal Opportunistic Scheduling and Approximations: The Log RuleabstractThis paper considers the design of opportunistic packet schedulers for users sharing a time-varying wireless channel from the performance and the robustness points of view. Firstly, for a simplified model falling in the classical Markov decision process framework where arrival and channel statistics are known, we numerically compute and evaluate the characteristics of mean-delay-optimal scheduling policies. The computed policies exhibit radial sum-rate monotonicity (RSM), i.e., when users' queues grow linearly (i.e. scaled up by a constant), the scheduler allocates service in a manner that de-emphasizes the balancing of unequal queues in favor of maximizing current system throughput (being opportunistic). This is in sharp contrast to previously proposed policies, e.g., MaxWeight and Exp rule. The latter, however, are throughput-optimal, in that without knowledge of arrival/channel statistics they achieve stability if at all feasible. To meet performance and robustness objectives, secondly, we propose a new class of policies, called the Log rule, that are radial sum-rate monotone and provably throughput optimal. Our simulations for realistic wireless channels confirm the superiority of the Log rule which achieves up to 80% reduction in mean packet delays. However, recent asymptotic analysis showed that Exp rule is optimal in terms of minimizing the asymptotic probability of max-queue overflow. In turn, in a companion paper we have shown that an RSM policy minimizes the asymptotic probability of sum-queue overflow. Finally, we use extensive simulations to explore the various possible design objectives for opportunistic schedulers. When users see heterogenous channels, we find that minimizing the worst asymptotic exponent across users may excessively compromise the overall delay. Our simulations show that only if perfectly tuned to the load will the Exp rule achieve low homogenous tails across users. Otherwise the Log rule achieves a 20-75% reduction in the 99thpercentile for most, if not all, the users. We conclude that for wireless environments, where precise resource allocation is virtually impossible, the Log rule may be more desirable for its robust and graceful degradation to unpredicted changes.
