Robust Structured Sparse Subspace Clustering with Neighborhood Preserving ProjectionabstractSparse subspace clustering algorithm cluster the data points located on the union of low-dimensional subspaces through the ℒ1minimization program. However, the ℒ1-norm is not rotation invariant, and utilizing original data containing noise as the dictionary leads to poor performance. This paper proposes a method named robust structured sparse subspace clustering with neighborhood preserving projection (RSSSC). Firstly, RSSSC replaces the ℒ1minimization program with a structured re-weighting sparse regularization term, effectively recovering the sparse representation. Secondly, RSSSC uses the extracted features as the dictionary in the self-representation problem to replace the original dataset containing noise and outliers, thus making the model more robust. By fully considering the low-dimensional manifold structure of samples in the original high-dimensional space, RSSSC preserves the neighborhood structure while learning the optimal projection. We verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through experiments on real-world image datasets. Wenyi Feng, Wei Guo 0023, Ting Xiao 0002, Zhe Wang 0002

Improving Few-shot Image Generation by Structural Discrimination and Textural ModulationabstractFew-shot image generation, which aims to produce plausible and diverse images for one category given a few images from this category, has drawn extensive attention. Existing approaches either globally interpolate different images or fuse local representations with pre-defined coefficients. However, such an intuitive combination of images/features only exploits the most relevant information for generation, leading to poor diversity and coarse-grained semantic fusion. To remedy this, this paper proposes a novel textural modulation (TexMod) mechanism to inject external semantic signals into internal local representations. Parameterized by the feedback from the discriminator, our TexMod enables more fined-grained semantic injection while maintaining the synthesis fidelity. Moreover, a global structural discriminator (StructD) is developed to explicitly guide the model to generate images with reasonable layout and outline. Furthermore, the frequency awareness of the model is reinforced by encouraging the model to distinguish frequency signals. Together with these techniques, we build a novel and effective model for few-shot image generation. The effectiveness of our model is identified by extensive experiments on three popular datasets and various settings. Besides achieving state-of-the-art synthesis performance on these datasets, our proposed techniques could be seamlessly integrated into existing models for a further performance boost. | 2018 | Improving FPGA Performance with a S44 LUT StructureabstractFPGA performance depends in part on the choice of basic logic cell. Previous work dating back to 1999-2005 found that the best look-up table (LUT) sizes for area-delay product are 4-6, with 4 better for area and 6 for performance. Since that time several things have changed. A new 'LUT structure' mapping technique can target cells with a larger number of inputs (cut size) without assuming that the cell implements all possible functions of those inputs. We consider in particular a 7-input function composed of two tightly-coupled 4-input LUTs. Changes in process technology have increased the relative importance of wiring delay and configuration memory area. Finally, modern benchmark applications include carry chains, math and memory blocks. Due to these changes, we show that mapping to a 7-input LUT structure can approach the performance of 6-input LUTs while retaining the area and static power advantage of 4-input LUTs. | 2015 | Technology Mapping into General Programmable CellsabstractField-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) implement logic functions using programmable cells, such as K-input lookup-tables (K-LUTs). A K-LUT can implement any Boolean function with K inputs and one output. Methods for mapping into K-LUTs are extensively researched and widely used. Recently, cells other than K LUTs have been explored, for example, those composed of several LUTs and those combining LUTs with several gates. Known methods for mapping into these cells are specialized and complicated, requiring a substantial effort to evaluate custom cell architectures. This paper presents a general approach to efficiently map into single-output K-input cells containing LUTs, MUXes, and other elementary gates. Cells with to 16 inputs can be handled. The mapper is fully automated and takes a logic network and a symbolic description of a programmable cell, and produces an optimized network composed of instances of the given cell. Past work on delay/area optimization during mapping is applicable and leads to good quality of results. Alan Mishchenko, Robert K. Brayton, Wenyi Feng, Jonathan W. Greene

Rent's rule based FPGA packing for routability optimizationabstractPacking is a critical step in the CAD flow for cluster-based FPGA architectures, and has a significant impact on the quality of the final placement and routing results. One basic quality metric is routability. Traditionally, minimizing cut (the number of external signals) has been used as the main criterion in packing for routability optimization. This paper shows that minimizing cut is a sub-optimal criterion, and argues to use the Rent characteristic as the new criterion for FPGA packing. We further propose using a recursive bipartitioning-based k-way partitioner to optimize the Rent characteristic during packing. We developed a new packer, PPack2, based on this approach. Compared to T-VPack, PPack2 achieves 35.4%, 35.6%, and 11.2% reduction in wire length, minimal channel width, and critical path delay, respectively. These improvements show that PPack2 outperforms all previous leading packing tools (including iRAC, HDPack, and the original PPack) by a wide margin. Wenyi Feng, Jonathan W. | 2012 | K-way partitioning based packing for FPGA logic blocks without input bandwidth constraintabstractCluster-based logic blocks from most commercial FPGA products do not have an input bandwidth constraint, i.e., limiting the number of signals going from routing channels into the block. We show that high quality packing for such logic blocks can be easily achieved based on k-way partitioning. We implemented 2 such packing tools: PPack (routability-only) and its timing driven version TPPack. Experimental results show that they have superior quality. Compared to T-VPack, PPack reduces total wire-length and minimal channel width by 22.6% and 22.6% with a 1.9% performance gain; TPPack reduces total wire-length and minimal channel width by 20.0% and 20.2% with a 9.0% performance gain. These results are achieved at no loss of utilization. Wenyi Feng

A 65nm flash-based FPGA fabric optimized for low cost and powerabstractThis paper describes a non-volatile reprogrammable FPGA fabric, whose configuration data are provided directly by flash memory. The fabric is optimized for low-cost, low-power applications, leveraging the density of flash and the elimination of conventional configuration SRAM and its attendant static power. After surveying the necessary background on flash and its application to FPGAs, the 1T flash cell is described along with relevant novel aspects of the fabric architecture. The addition of a third level of switching between inter-cluster signals and logic inputs helps to reduce area and raise typical utilization above 95%. Despite the longer signal path, performance is maintained by synergism between the improved routing flexibility and extreme minimization of the fastest LUT input delay. Test cost is reduced by built-in circuits that can test all switches without reprogramming the flash memory. The fabric has been implemented in a 65nm CMOS embedded flash process. Jonathan W. | 2008 | Designing Efficient Input Interconnect Blocks for LUT Clusters Using Counting and EntropyabstractIn a cluster-based FPGA, the interconnect from external routing tracks and cluster feedbacks to the LUT inputs consumes significant area, and no consensus has emerged among different implementations (e.g., 1-level or 2-level). In this paper, we model this interconnect as a unified input interconnect block (IIB). We identify three types of IIBs and develop general combinatorial techniques to count the number of distinct functional configurations for them. We use entropy, defined as the logarithm of this count, to estimate an IIB's routing flexibility. This enables us to analytically evaluate different IIBs without the customary time-consuming place and route experiments. We show that both depopulated 1-level IIBs and VPR-style 2-level IIBs achieve high routing flexibility but lack area efficiency. We propose a novel class of highly efficient, yet still simple, IIBs that use substantially fewer switches with only a small degradation in routing flexibility. Experimental results verify the routability of these IIBs, and confirm that entropy is a good predictor of routability. Wenyi Feng, Sinan Kaptanoglu

Post-Placement Interconnect EntropyabstractWe introduce the concept of post-placement interconnect entropy: the minimal number of bits required to describe a well-placed netlist, which has connection lengths distributed according to Rent's rule. The entropy is a function of the number N of cells in the netlist and the Rent exponent p. We derive an expression for the entropy per cell and show that it converges as N approaches infinity. The entropy provides an achievable lower bound on the number of configuration bits in a programmable logic device (PLD) [or field-programmable gate array (FPGA)] and a useful measure of its routing flexibility. Specific numerical values are computed for practical situations. For example, any scalable FPGA composed of 4-input lookup table cells would require 31 configuration bits per cell. We compare this to the actual number of configuration bits in a standard FPGA architecture. We generalize the bound to dimensions higher than two, and show that for any p there is an optimal dimension that minimizes the bound. Wenyi Feng, Jonathan W. Greene

Adaptive Algorithms for Maximal Diagnosis of Wiring InterconnectsabstractWe give two algorithms for maximal diagnosis of wiring networks without repair under a general fault model. Maximal diagnosis consists of identifying all diagnosable faults under the assumptions that each net can have multiple drivers and receivers and can be affected by any number of short and open faults. This process is equivalent to verifying all connections between inputs and outputs. Matrices represent the connections in fault-free and faulty networks. We present two new algorithms and discuss prior algorithms. All algorithms discussed are adaptive and have their tests divided into two phases. Our first new algorithm exploits a unique condition for verifying the connections; our second new algorithm maps the connection verification problem to a bipartite graph. All algorithms discussed use an independent test set for the first test phase. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform previous algorithms for maximal diagnosis in terms of the number of tests. The total time complexity for computing the test sequences and analyzing the output response is polynomial. Wenyi Feng, Fred J. Meyer, Fabrizio Lombardi

A BIST TPG Approach for Interconnect Testing With the IEEE 1149.1 STDabstractIn this paper, a novel architecture for built-in self test (BIST) and different designs for both the control and data test pattern generators (CTPG and DTPG) are proposed for interconnect testing using the IEEE standard 1149.1. A general and complete procedure to implement this architecture is also presented. For the DTPG design, the complementary counting sequence (as an example of a maximal independent test set) is used for fault detection. One of the main features of this design is its independence with respect to the type of cell in the chain. A novel design is proposed for the CTPG to avoid damage to the circuit as well as to guarantee 100% fault coverage with low hardware overhead and time complexity. Wenyi Feng, Wei-Kang Huang, Fred J. | 1999 | Neural network designed volume holographic wavelet correlator for pattern recognitionabstractNeural network (NN) techniques have been introduced to design wavelet filters and wavelet transform systems for pattern recognition. Based on the theory of wavelet matched filtering and the associative characteristic of volume holographic storage in a photo refractive crystal, a novel volume holographic wavelet correlator is constructed. A neural network is proposed to optimize parameters of the wavelet filters to improve recognition performance of the system. Simulation and experimental results are given to testify the effect of optimization. Its application in human face recognition is studied. Use of the neural network to refine parameters of filters is attractive. Wenyi Feng, Yingbai Yan, Guofan Jin, Minxian Wu, Qingsheng He

Fault Detection in a Tristate System EnvironmentabstractWe present a novel approach for detecting faults in tristate system environments-e.g., in multiple board systems. These environments are made of an interconnect and drivers/receivers with tristate features. We present a comprehensive fault model that includes faults in terminals (drivers/receivers) and nets. Under this fault model, physical faults (stuck-at and short), as well as functional faults (dominance, permanently enabled or permanently disabled driver modes), are taken into account. We show that, for a single net with L drivers, 2L tests are necessary and sufficient for fault detection. This is independent of the number of receivers. We extend this result to a system environment with N nets and where K is the maximal number of drivers for a net. Under the proposed fault model, any number of faults of any type can be detected in a system environment using any types that can be detected in a system environment using max (2K, P) tests, where P is the minimal integer that satisfies C/sub /2//sup P//spl ges/N. If only the traditional (wired-AND or wired-OR) model is assumed, then the test set required for fault detection can be further reduced. We provide simulation results and show that the proposed approach outperforms previous methods found in the technical literature. Wenyi Feng, Wei-Kang Huang, Fred J. Meyer, Fabrizio Lombardi
