| 2021 | Skyformer: Remodel Self-Attention with Gaussian Kernel and Nystr\"om MethodabstractTransformers are expensive to train due to the quadratic time and space complexity in the self-attention mechanism. On the other hand, although kernel machines suffer from the same computation bottleneck in pairwise dot products, several approximation schemes have been successfully incorporated to considerably reduce their computational cost without sacrificing too much accuracy. In this work, we leverage the computation methods for kernel machines to alleviate the high computational cost and introduce Skyformer, which replaces the softmax structure with a Gaussian kernel to stabilize the model training and adapts the Nyström method to a non-positive semidefinite matrix to accelerate the computation. We further conduct theoretical analysis by showing that the matrix approximation error of our proposed method is small in the spectral norm. Experiments on Long Range Arena benchmark show that the proposed method is sufficient in getting comparable or even better performance than the full self-attention while requiring fewer computation resources. | 2020 | Cross-media Structured Common Space for Multimedia Event ExtractionabstractWe introduce a new task, MultiMedia Event Extraction (M 2 E 2 ), which aims to extract events and their arguments from multimedia documents. We develop the first benchmark and collect a dataset of 245 multimedia news articles with extensively annotated events and arguments.1 We propose a novel method, Weakly Aligned Structured Embedding (WASE), that encodes structured representations of semantic information from textual and visual data into a common embedding space. The structures are aligned across modalities by employing a weakly supervised training strategy, which enables exploiting available resources without explicit cross-media annotation.Compared to unimodal state-of-the-art methods, our approach achieves 4.0% and 9.8% absolute F-score gains on text event argument role labeling and visual event extraction.Compared to stateof-the-art multimedia unstructured representations, we achieve 8.3% and 5.0% absolute Fscore gains on multimedia event extraction and argument role labeling, respectively.By utilizing images, we extract 21.4% more event mentions than traditional text-only methods. | 2020 | ReviewRobot: Explainable Paper Review Generation based on Knowledge SynthesisabstractTo assist human review process, we build a novel ReviewRobot to automatically assign a review score and write comments for multiple categories such as novelty and meaningful comparison.A good review needs to be knowledgeable, namely that the comments should be constructive and informative to help improve the paper; and explainable by providing detailed evidence.ReviewRobot achieves these goals via three steps: (1) We perform domainspecific Information Extraction to construct a knowledge graph (KG) from the target paper under review, a related work KG from the papers cited by the target paper, and a background KG from a large collection of previous papers in the domain.(2) By comparing these three KGs, we predict a review score and detailed structured knowledge as evidence for each review category.(3) We carefully select and generalize human review sentences into templates, and apply these templates to transform the review scores and evidence into natural language comments.Experimental results show that our review score predictor reaches 71.4%-100% accuracy.Human assessment by domain experts shows that 41.7%-70.5% of the comments generated by ReviewRobot are valid and constructive, and better than humanwritten ones for 20% of the time. Thus, Re-viewRobot can serve as an assistant for paper reviewers, program chairs and authors. 1 Qingyun Wang 0005, Qi Zeng 0001, Lifu Huang, Kevin Knight, Heng Ji 0001, Nazneen Fatema Rajani |

| 2019 | Learning Personalized End-to-End Goal-Oriented DialogabstractMost existing works on dialog systems only consider conversation content while neglecting the personality of the user the bot is interacting with, which begets several unsolved issues. In this paper, we present a personalized end-to-end model in an attempt to leverage personalization in goal-oriented dialogs. We first introduce a PROFILE MODEL which encodes user profiles into distributed embeddings and refers to conversation history from other similar users. Then a PREFERENCE MODEL captures user preferences over knowledge base entities to handle the ambiguity in user requests. The two models are combined into the PERSONALIZED MEMN2N. Experiments show that the proposed model achieves qualitative performance improvements over state-of-the-art methods. As for human evaluation, it also outperforms other approaches in terms of task completion rate and user satisfaction. Liangchen Luo, Wenhao Huang 0001, Qi Zeng 0001, Zaiqing Nie, Xu Sun 0001 |

| 2018 | An Auto-Encoder Matching Model for Learning Utterance-Level Semantic Dependency in Dialogue GenerationabstractGenerating semantically coherent responses is still a major challenge in dialogue generation.Different from conventional text generation tasks, the mapping between inputs and responses in conversations is more complicated, which highly demands the understanding of utterance-level semantic dependency, a relation between the whole meanings of inputs and outputs. To address this problem, we propose an Auto-Encoder Matching (AEM) model to learn such dependency. The model contains two auto-encoders and one mapping module. The auto-encoders learn the semantic representations of inputs and responses, and the mapping module learns to connect the utterance-level representations.Experimental results from automatic and human evaluations demonstrate that our model is capable of generating responses of high coherence and fluency compared to baseline models. 1 Liangchen Luo, Jingjing Xu 0001, Junyang Lin, Qi Zeng 0001, Xu Sun 0001 |

| 2018 | A Skeleton-Based Model for Promoting Coherence Among Sentences in Narrative Story GenerationabstractNarrative story generation is a challenging problem because it demands the generated sentences with tight semantic connections, which has not been well studied by most existing generative models. To address this problem, we propose a skeleton-based model to promote the coherence of generated stories.Different from traditional models that generate a complete sentence at a stroke, the proposed model first generates the most critical phrases, called skeleton, and then expands the skeleton to a complete and fluent sentence. The skeleton is not manually defined, but learned by a reinforcement learning method.Compared to the state-of-the-art models, our skeleton-based model can generate significantly more coherent text according to human evaluation and automatic evaluation. The G-score is improved by 20.1% in human evaluation. 1 Jingjing Xu 0001, Xuancheng Ren, Yi Zhang 0050, Qi Zeng 0001, Xiaoyan Cai, Xu Sun 0001 |
