| 2014 | Cancerous tweets: Socially sharing sensitive health informationabstractSocial networks provide opportunities to overshare information in a secondhand nature as information passes from primary to secondary to tertiary sources. This information can be supplemented with geographical information to obtain the approximate location of the primary information source without the primary source's consent, presenting a potential breach of privacy. Messages regarding severe illness were obtained from the popular social media site Twitter to understand how sensitive information may propagate unregulated through secondhand information sharing. Results indicate that 59% of tweets concerning severe illness are Retweets distributed without explicit consent from the primary source. A majority of these Retweets were propagated by family and friends of the primary source. Michael D. Anderson, Julie A. Adams, Eli R. Hooten |

| 2003 | Robust power control for CDMA networks subject to modelization errorsabstractIn this paper, we present a robust decentralized method for jointly performing channel estimation and closed loop power control for the reverse link of CDMA networks. Our method, based on linear quadratic control systems theory and Kalman filtering, does not require any training symbols for channel or signal to interference ratio (SIR) estimation. The main interest of this new scheme is that it improves the performance of current SIR based power control techniques while avoiding the problem of power escalation, which is often observed in current systems. In this paper, we also provide an analysis on the robustness of this method towards errors on the control command and imperfect call admission control. Michael D. Anderson, Sylvie Perreau |

| 1995 | The Programmers' Playground: I/O Abstraction for User-Configurable Distributed ApplicationsabstractI/O abstraction is offered as a new high-level approach to interprocess communication. Functional components of a distributed system are written as encapsulated modules that act upon local data structures, some of which may be published for external use. Relationships among modules are specified by logical connections among their published data structures. Whenever a module updates published data, I/O takes place implicitly according to the configuration of logical connections. The Programmers' Playground, a software library and runtime system supporting I/O abstraction, is described. Design goals include the separation of communication from computation, dynamic reconfiguration of the communication structure, and the uniform treatment of discrete and continuous data types. Support for end-user configuration of distributed multimedia applications is the motivation for the work.> Kenneth J. Goldman, Bala Swaminathan, Paul McCartney, Michael D. Anderson, Ram Sethuraman |
