2025 T2V-CompBench: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Compositional Text-to-video Generation
abstract
Text-to-video (T2V) generative models have advanced significantly, yet their ability to compose different objects, attributes, actions, and motions into a video remains unexplored. Previous text-to-video benchmarks also neglect this important ability for evaluation. In this work, we conduct the first systematic study on compositional text-to-video generation. We propose T2V-CompBench, the first benchmark tailored for compositional text-to-video generation. T2V-CompBench encompasses diverse aspects of compositionality, including consistent attribute binding, dynamic attribute binding, spatial relationships, motion binding, action binding, object interactions, and generative numeracy. We further carefully design evaluation metrics of multimodal large language model (MLLM)-based, detection-based, and tracking-based metrics, which can better reflect the compositional text-to-video generation quality of seven proposed categories with 1400 text prompts. The effectiveness of the proposed metrics is verified by correlation with human evaluations. We also benchmark various text-to-video generative models and conduct in-depth analysis across different models and various compositional categories. We find that compositional text-to-video generation is highly challenging for current models, and we hope our attempt could shed light on future research in this direction.

2018 Head Pose Estimation on Low-Quality Images
abstract
Head pose estimation methods can be broadly classified into learning-based methods and model-based methods. The learning based methods use machine learning techniques to directly predict the pose from image appearance, while the model-based methods link the 2D observation (e.g. facial landmarks) and 3D model through the projection model for pose estimation. However, both methods may have difficulty on images with very low quality (e.g. low resolution, occlusion, and noisy images). For example, there would be limited appearance information to generate accurate landmark detection on lowquality images for reliable face pose estimation. To tackle pose estimation on low-quality images, we propose to combine the learning and model based methods. Specifically, we first build the relationship between facial landmark locations and image appearance using the Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) model. Then, we link the landmark locations and 3D model analytically using the projection model. By combining the RBM model with the projection model, without explicit landmark detection, we predict the head pose with a KL-divergence based method and a gradient-based method. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2017 Simultaneous Facial Landmark Detection, Pose and Deformation Estimation Under Facial Occlusion
abstract
Facial landmark detection, head pose estimation, and facial deformation analysis are typical facial behavior analysis tasks in computer vision. The existing methods usually perform each task independently and sequentially, ignoring their interactions. To tackle this problem, we propose a unified framework for simultaneous facial landmark detection, head pose estimation, and facial deformation analysis, and the proposed model is robust to facial occlusion. Following a cascade procedure augmented with model-based head pose estimation, we iteratively update the facial landmark locations, facial occlusion, head pose and facial deformation until convergence. The experimental results on benchmark databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for simultaneous facial landmark detection, head pose and facial deformation estimation, even if the images are under facial occlusion.

2017 Coupled cascade regression for simultaneous facial landmark detection and head pose estimation
abstract
Current approaches for facial landmark detection and head pose estimation first perform landmark detection, followed by fitting 3D face model or regression model to estimate head pose. Different from the existing methods, in this paper, we propose a unified method, called Coupled Cascade Regression (CCR), for simultaneous facial landmark detection and head pose estimation. At each cascade level, two separate regressors are learned to update the landmark locations and 3D face model parameters based on the local appearance features, respectively. Since 2D facial landmark locations and head pose parameters are related, we further apply the projection model to refine the prediction results in each cascade iteration and make them consistent. As a result, CCR can leverage both the learning methods and the projection model to simultaneously perform facial landmark detection and pose estimation to enhance the performances of both tasks. Experimental results on 300-W and BU datasets indicate that our proposed CCR method outperforms many conventional methods both for landmark detection and head pose estimation.

2016 Constrained Joint Cascade Regression Framework for Simultaneous Facial Action Unit Recognition and Facial Landmark Detection
abstract
Cascade regression framework has been shown to be effective for facial landmark detection. It starts from an initial face shape and gradually predicts the face shape update from the local appearance features to generate the facial landmark locations in the next iteration until convergence. In this paper, we improve upon the cascade regression framework and propose the Constrained Joint Cascade Regression Framework (CJCRF) for simultaneous facial action unit recognition and facial landmark detection, which are two related face analysis tasks, but are seldomly exploited together. In particular, we first learn the relationships among facial action units and face shapes as a constraint. Then, in the proposed constrained joint cascade regression framework, with the help from the constraint, we iteratively update the facial landmark locations and the action unit activation probabilities until convergence. Experimental results demonstrate that the intertwined relationships of facial action units and face shapes boost the performances of both facial action unit recognition and facial landmark detection. The experimental results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method comparing to the state-of-the-art works.

2016 Constrained Deep Transfer Feature Learning and Its Applications
abstract
Feature learning with deep models has achieved impressive results for both data representation and classification for various vision tasks. Deep feature learning, however, typically requires a large amount of training data, which may not be feasible for some application domains. Transfer learning can be one of the approaches to alleviate this problem by transferring data from data-rich source domain to data-scarce target domain. Existing transfer learning methods typically perform one-shot transfer learning and often ignore the specific properties that the transferred data must satisfy. To address these issues, we introduce a constrained deep transfer feature learning method to perform simultaneous transfer learning and feature learning by performing transfer learning in a progressively improving feature space iteratively in order to better narrow the gap between the target domain and the source domain for effective transfer of the data from source domain to target domain. Furthermore, we propose to exploit the target domain knowledge and incorporate such prior knowledge as constraint during transfer learning to ensure that the transferred data satisfies certain properties of the target domain. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed constrained deep transfer feature learning method, we apply it to thermal feature learning for eye detection by transferring from the visible domain. We also applied the proposed method for cross-view facial expression recognition as a second application. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for both applications.

2016 Multimodal Spontaneous Emotion Corpus for Human Behavior Analysis
abstract
Emotion is expressed in multiple modalities, yet most research has considered at most one or two. This stems in part from the lack of large, diverse, well-annotated, multimodal databases with which to develop and test algorithms. We present a well-annotated, multimodal, multidimensional spontaneous emotion corpus of 140 participants. Emotion inductions were highly varied. Data were acquired from a variety of sensors of the face that included high-resolution 3D dynamic imaging, high-resolution 2D video, and thermal (infrared) sensing, and contact physiological sensors that included electrical conductivity of the skin, respiration, blood pressure, and heart rate. Facial expression was annotated for both the occurrence and intensity of facial action units from 2D video by experts in the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). The corpus further includes derived features from 3D, 2D, and IR (infrared) sensors and baseline results for facial expression and action unit detection. The entire corpus will be made available to the research community.

2016 Learning-by-synthesis for accurate eye detection
abstract
Cascade regression framework has been successfully applied to facial landmark detection and achieves state-of-the-art performance recently. It requires large number of facial images with labeled landmarks for training regression models. We propose to use cascade regression framework to detect eye center by capturing its contextual and shape information of other related eye landmarks. While for eye detection, it is time-consuming to collect large scale training data and it also can be unreliable for accurate manual annotation of eye related landmarks. In addition, it is difficult to collect enough training data to cover various illuminations, subjects with different head poses and gaze directions. To tackle this problem, we propose to learn cascade regression models from synthetic photorealistic data. In our proposed approach, eye region is coarsely localized by a facial landmark detection method first. Then we learn the cascade regression models iteratively to predict the eye shape updates based on local appearance and shape features. Experimental results on benchmark databases such as BioID and GI4E show that our proposed cascade regression models learned from synthetic data can accurately localize the eye center. Comparisons with existing methods also demonstrates our proposed framework can achieve preferable performance against state-of-the-art methods.

2015 Robust Facial Landmark Detection Under Significant Head Poses and Occlusion
abstract
There have been tremendous improvements for facial landmark detection on general "in-the-wild" images. However, it is still challenging to detect the facial landmarks on images with severe occlusion and images with large head poses (e.g. profile face). In fact, the existing algorithms usually can only handle one of them. In this work, we propose a unified robust cascade regression framework that can handle both images with severe occlusion and images with large head poses. Specifically, the method iteratively predicts the landmark occlusions and the landmark locations. For occlusion estimation, instead of directly predicting the binary occlusion vectors, we introduce a supervised regression method that gradually updates the landmark visibility probabilities in each iteration to achieve robustness. In addition, we explicitly add occlusion pattern as a constraint to improve the performance of occlusion prediction. For landmark detection, we combine the landmark visibility probabilities, the local appearances, and the local shapes to iteratively update their positions. The experimental results show that the proposed method is significantly better than state-of-the-art works on images with severe occlusion and images with large head poses. It is also comparable to other methods on general "in-the-wild" images.

2014 A Hierarchical Probabilistic Model for Facial Feature Detection
abstract
Facial feature detection from facial images has attracted great attention in the field of computer vision. It is a nontrivial task since the appearance and shape of the face tend to change under different conditions. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical probabilistic model that could infer the true locations of facial features given the image measurements even if the face is with significant facial expression and pose. The hierarchical model implicitly captures the lower level shape variations of facial components using the mixture model. Furthermore, in the higher level, it also learns the joint relationship among facial components, the facial expression, and the pose information through automatic structure learning and parameter estimation of the probabilistic model. Experimental results on benchmark databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical probabilistic model.

2014 Learning the Deep Features for Eye Detection in Uncontrolled Conditions
abstract
Although eye detection has been studied for a long time in academic and industrial communities, it is still a changeling problem if facial images are with varying head poses, facial expressions, illuminations and resolution changes etc., which tend to happen in uncontrolled conditions. In this work, we propose to learn deep features that could capture the appearance variations of eyes for eye detection on those changeling facial images. Specifically, we exploit the idea of deep feature learning method, and construct eye detector based on the learned features. Experimental results on benchmark databases with different head poses, expressions, illuminations or resolutions show the effectiveness of the eye detector based on the learned features compare to state-of-the-art works.

2013 Facial Feature Tracking Under Varying Facial Expressions and Face Poses Based on Restricted Boltzmann Machines
abstract
Facial feature tracking is an active area in computer vision due to its relevance to many applications. It is a nontrivial task, since faces may have varying facial expressions, poses or occlusions. In this paper, we address this problem by proposing a face shape prior model that is constructed based on the Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) and their variants. Specifically, we first construct a model based on Deep Belief Networks to capture the face shape variations due to varying facial expressions for near-frontal view. To handle pose variations, the frontal face shape prior model is incorporated into a 3-way RBM model that could capture the relationship between frontal face shapes and non-frontal face shapes. Finally, we introduce methods to systematically combine the face shape prior models with image measurements of facial feature points. Experiments on benchmark databases show that with the proposed method, facial feature points can be tracked robustly and accurately even if faces have significant facial expressions and poses.
