| 2020 | In Search for a Cure: Recommendation With Knowledge Graph on CORD-19abstractThe whole globe has cranked up for coping with the COVID-19 situation. The hands-on tutorial targets at providing a comprehensive and pragmatic end-to-end walk-through for building an academic research paper recommender for the use case of COVID-19 related study, with the help of knowledge graph technology. The code examples that demonstrate the theories are reproducible and can hopefully provide value for researchers to build tools that support conducting research to find a cure to COVID-19. | 2014 | A Unifying View of Representer TheoremsabstractIt is known that the solution of regularization and interpolation problems with Hilbertian penalties can be expressed as a linear combination of the data. This very useful property, called the representer theorem, has been widely studied and applied to machine learning problems. Analogous optimality conditions have appeared in other contexts, notably in matrix regularization. In this paper we propose a unified view, which generalizes the concept of representer theorems and extends necessary and sufficient conditions for such theorems to hold. Our main result shows a close connection between representer theorems and certain classes of regularization penalties, which we call orthomonotone functions. This result not only subsumes previous representer theorems as special cases but also yields a new class of optimality conditions, which goes beyond the classical linear combination of the data. Moreover, orthomonotonicity provides a useful criterion for testing whether a representer theorem holds for a specific regularization problem. Andreas Argyriou, Francesco Dinuzzo |

| 2012 | Sparse Prediction with the $k$-Support NormabstractWe derive a novel norm that corresponds to the tightest convex relaxation of sparsity combined with an $\ell_2$ penalty. We show that this new norm provides a tighter relaxation than the elastic net, and is thus a good replacement for the Lasso or the elastic net in sparse prediction problems. But through studying our new norm, we also bound the looseness of the elastic net, thus shedding new light on it and providing justification for its use. | 2007 | A Spectral Regularization Framework for Multi-Task Structure LearningabstractLearning the common structure shared by a set of supervised tasks is an important practical and theoretical problem. Knowledge of this structure may lead to bet- ter generalization performance on the tasks and may also facilitate learning new tasks. We propose a framework for solving this problem, which is based on reg- ularization with spectral functions of matrices. This class of regularization prob- lems exhibits appealing computational properties and can be optimized ef(cid:2)ciently by an alternating minimization algorithm. In addition, we provide a necessary and suf(cid:2)cient condition for convexity of the regularizer. We analyze concrete ex- amples of the framework, which are equivalent to regularization with Lp matrix norms. Experiments on two real data sets indicate that the algorithm scales well with the number of tasks and improves on state of the art statistical performance. Andreas Argyriou, Charles A. | 2006 | A DC-programming algorithm for kernel selectionabstractWe address the problem of learning a kernel for a given supervised learning task. Our approach consists in searching within the convex hull of a prescribed set of basic kernels for one which minimizes a convex regularization functional. A unique feature of this approach compared to others in the literature is that the number of basic kernels can be infinite. We only require that they are continuously parameterized. For example, the basic kernels could be isotropic Gaussians with variance in a prescribed interval or even Gaussians parameterized by multiple continuous parameters. Our work builds upon a formulation involving a minimax optimization problem and a recently proposed greedy algorithm for learning the kernel. Although this optimization problem is not convex, it belongs to the larger class of DC (difference of convex functions) programs. Therefore, we apply recent results from DC optimization theory to create a new algorithm for learning the kernel. Our experimental results on benchmark data sets show that this algorithm outperforms a previously proposed method. Andreas Argyriou, Raphael Hauser, Charles A. Micchelli, Massimiliano Pontil |

| 2006 | Multi-Task Feature LearningabstractWe present a method for learning a low-dimensional representation which is shared across a set of multiple related tasks. The method builds upon the well- known 1-norm regularization problem using a new regularizer which controls the number of learned features common for all the tasks. We show that this problem is equivalent to a convex optimization problem and develop an iterative algorithm for solving it. The algorithm has a simple interpretation: it alternately performs a supervised and an unsupervised step, where in the latter step we learn common- across-tasks representations and in the former step we learn task-specific functions using these representations. We report experiments on a simulated and a real data set which demonstrate that the proposed method dramatically improves the per- formance relative to learning each task independently. Our algorithm can also be used, as a special case, to simply select – not learn – a few common features across the tasks. Andreas Argyriou, Theodoros Evgeniou, Massimiliano Pontil |

| 2005 | Combining Graph Laplacians for Semi-Supervised LearningabstractA foundational problem in semi-supervised learning is the construction of a graph underlying the data. We propose to use a method which optimally combines a number of differently constructed graphs. For each of these graphs we associate a basic graph kernel. We then compute an optimal combined kernel. This kernel solves an extended regularization problem which requires a joint minimization over both the data and the set of graph kernels. We present encouraging results on different OCR tasks where the optimal combined kernel is computed from graphs constructed with a variety of distances functions and the `k ' in nearest neighbors.
