| 2022 | A Synthetic Prediction Market for Estimating Confidence in Published WorkabstractExplainably estimating confidence in published scholarly work offers opportunity for faster and more robust scientific progress. We develop a synthetic prediction market to assess the credibility of published claims in the social and behavioral sciences literature. We demonstrate our system and detail our findings using a collection of known replication projects. We suggest that this work lays the foundation for a research agenda that creatively uses AI for peer review. | 2009 | 3D open-surface shape correspondence for statistical shape modeling: Identifying topologically consistent landmarksabstractShape correspondence, which aims at accurately identifying corresponding landmarks from a given population of shape instances, is a very challenging step in constructing a statistical shape model such as the Point Distribution Model. The state-of-the-art methods such as MDL and SPHARM are primarily focused on closed-surface shape correspondence. In this paper we develop a novel method aimed at identifying accurately corresponding landmarks on 3D open-surfaces with a closed boundary. In particular, we enforce explicit topology consistency on the identified landmarks to ensure that they form a simple, consistent triangle mesh to more accurately model the correspondence of the underlying continuous shape instances. The proposed method also ensures the correspondence of the boundary of the open surfaces. For our experiments, we test the proposed method by constructing a statistical shape model of the human diaphragm from 26 shape instances. | 2009 | Compound precoding: a pre-equalisation technique for the bandlimited Gaussian channelabstractCompound precoding is a state-of-the-art technique for combining trellis coding and decision-feedback equalisation (DFE) prior to upstream transmission on the telephone-line channel, and is an option in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU)-T V.92 standard. In this paper, we provide a detailed overview of this technique. We demonstrate that compound precoding combines in a straightforward manner with most practical trellis codes. We show that compound precoding exhibits a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain with respect to other schemes which combine with trellis coding, and quantify this gain. We also show that, for stability of the compound precoder, the precoder feedforward filter must be decomposed into its constituent minimum phase (MP) and all pass (AP) components. Finally, a simulation study of V.92 upstream transmission demonstrates the shaping advantage of compound precoding over competitor techniques for pre-equalisation in this setting. Mark F. | 1989 | Implementation of a full V32 modem using a single DSP chipabstractThe implementation of a full V32 modem in which all of the signal processing tasks are carried out by a single Motorola DSP56001 chip is described. This has been achieved with no perceptible effect on performance through careful algorithm design combined with efficient programming. The main emphasis of the present work is on those algorithms that are most computationally intensive, namely the echo cancellation and Viterbi decoding algorithms. A simple but effective technique for coping with the problem of frequency offset on the far echo is described. Some performance results are presented.> Anthony D. Fagan, Paul F. Curran, Brian P. | 1984 | Design and Test of a Spectrally Efficient Land Mobile Communications System Using LPC SpeechabstractA communication system was built and tested to operate in the land mobile VHF band (150-174 MHz) at a channel separation of only 6 kHz. The audio source was digitally encoded at 2.4 kbits/s using linear predictive coding (LPC). The speech data stream was transmitted by frequency shift keying (FSK) which allowed the use of class-C transmitters and discriminator detection in the receiver. Baseband filtering of the NRZ data resulted in a narrow transmitter spectrum. The receiver had a 3 dB bandwidth of 2.4 kHz which allowed data transmission with minimal intersymbol interference and frequency offset degradation. A 58 percent eye opening was found. Bit error rate (BER) performance was measured with simulated Rayleigh fading at typical 150 MHz rates. Additional tests included capture, ignition noise susceptibility, adjacent channel protection, degradation from frequency offset, and bit error effects upon speech quality. A field test was conducted to compare the speech quality of the digital radio to that of a conventional 5 kHz deviation FM mobile radio. Michael McLaughlin, Donald Linder, Scott Carney |

| 1980 | High performance processor for real-time speech applicationsabstractA High Performance Processor design is described which is employed in the study of digital signal processing techniques. The processor is seen to enhance algorithm development as a high speed peripheral to a general purpose minicomputer facility. In addition, it can operate in a stand-alone mode and has been used to implement a real-time Linear Predictive vocoder system. Michael McLaughlin, Frank Hudziak, Ira A. Gerson, Kevin L. Kloker |
