| 2026 | Optimizing Multilingual LLMs via Federated Learning: A Study of Client Language CompositionabstractFederated Learning (FL) of Large Language Models (LLMs) in multilingual environments presents significant challenges stemming from heterogeneous language distributions across clients and disparities in language resource availability. To address these challenges, we extended the FederatedScope-LLM framework to support multilingual instruction-tuning experiments with LLMs. We also introduced a novel client-specific early stopping mechanism, Local Dynamic Early Stopping (LDES-FL), which allows clients to pause and resume local training based on client-side validation performance, enhancing training efficiency and sustainability. Through a series of experiments, we studied how client language composition — from fully monolingual to increasingly multilingual clients — affects multilingual quality, fairness and training cost. Monolingual local fine-tuning remains the most effective for single-language specialization, whereas federated training is better suited to learning a single balanced multilingual model. In FL, increasing within-client multilinguality leads to stronger and fairer global models, narrows the gap to centralized multilingual fine-tuning, and yields the largest gains for lower-resource languages, albeit at the cost of more optimization steps. Overall, our results identify client language composition as a key design variable in multilingual FL, shaping performance, fairness and efficiency. Aleix Sant, Jordi Luque, Carlos Escolano |

| 2022 | Recycle Your Wav2Vec2 Codebook: A Speech Perceiver for Keyword SpottingabstractSpeech information in a pretrained wav2vec2.0 model is usually leveraged through its encoder, which has at least 95M parameters, being not so suitable for small footprint Keyword Spotting. In this work, we show an efficient way of profiting from wav2vec2.0’s linguistic knowledge, by recycling the phonetic information encoded in its latent codebook, which has been typically thrown away after pretraining. We do so by transferring the codebook as weights for the latent bottleneck of a Keyword Spotting Perceiver, thus initializing such model with phonetic embeddings already. The Perceiver design relies on cross-attention between these embeddings and input data to generate better representations. Our method delivers accuracy gains compared to random initialization, at no latency costs. Plus, we show that the phonetic embeddings can easily be downsampled with k-means clustering, speeding up inference in 3.5 times at only slight accuracy penalties. | 2021 | Efficient Keyword Spotting by Capturing Long-Range Interactions with Temporal Lambda NetworksabstractModels based on attention mechanisms have shown unprecedented speech recognition performance. However, they are computationally expensive and unnecessarily complex for keyword spotting, a task targeted to small-footprint devices. This work explores the application of Lambda networks, an alternative framework for capturing long-range interactions without attention, for the keyword spotting task. We propose a novel ResNet-based model by swapping the residual blocks by temporal Lambda layers. Furthermore, the proposed architecture is built upon uni-dimensional temporal convolutions that further reduce its complexity. The presented model does not only reach state-of-the-art accuracies on the Google Speech Commands dataset, but it is 85% and 65% lighter than its Transformer-based (KWT) and convolutional (ResNet15) counterparts while being up to 100× faster. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to explore the Lambda framework within the speech domain and therefore, we unravel further research of new interfaces based on this architecture. | 2020 | Detection of Speech Events and Speaker Characteristics through Photo-Plethysmographic Signal Neural ProcessingabstractThe use of photoplethysmogram signal (PPG) for heart and sleep monitoring is commonly found nowadays in smart-phones and wrist wearables. Besides common usages, it has been proposed and reported that person information can be extracted from PPG for other uses, like biometry tasks. In this work, we explore several end-to-end convolutional neural network architectures for detection of human's characteristics such as gender or person identity. In addition, we evaluate whether speech/non-speech events may be inferred from PPG signal, where speech might translate in fluctuations into the pulse signal. The obtained results are promising and clearly show the potential of fully end-to-end topologies for automatic extraction of meaningful biomarkers, even from a noisy signal sampled by a low-cost PPG sensor. The AUCs for best architectures put forward PPG wave as biological discriminant, reaching 79% and 89.0%, respectively for gender and person verification tasks. Furthermore, speech detection experiments reporting AUCs around 69% encourage us for further exploration about the feasibility of PPG for speech processing tasks. | 2020 | A unifying framework for modeling acoustic/prosodic entrainment: definition and evaluation on two large corporaabstractAcoustic/prosodic (a/p) entrainment has been associated with multiple positive social aspects of human-human conversations. However, research on its effects is still preliminary, first because how to model it is far from standardized, and second because most of the reported findings rely on small corpora or on corpora collected in experimental setups. The present article has a twofold purpose: 1) it proposes a unifying statistical framework for modeling a/p entrainment, and 2) it tests on two large corpora of spontaneous telephone interactions whether three metrics derived from this framework predict positive social aspects of the conversations. The corpora differ in their spoken language, domain, and positive social outcome attached. To our knowledge, this is the first article studying relations between a/p entrainment and positive social outcomes in such large corpora of spontaneous dialog. Our results suggest that our metrics effectively predict, up to some extent, positive social aspects of conversations, which not only validates the methodology, but also provides further insights into the elusive topic of entrainment in human-human conversation. | 2016 | Improving i-Vector and PLDA Based Speaker Clustering with Long-Term Featuresabstracti-vector modeling techniques have been successfully used for speaker clustering task recently. In this work, we propose the extraction of i-vectors from short-and long-term speech features, and the fusion of their PLDA scores within the frame of speaker diarization. Two sets of i-vectors are first extracted from short-term spectral and longterm\nvoice-quality, prosodic and glottal to noise excitation ratio (GNE) features. Then, the PLDA scores of these two ivectors are fused for speaker clustering task. Experiments have been carried out on single and multiple site scenario test sets of Augmented Multi-party Interaction (AMI) corpus. Experimental results show that i-vector based PLDA speaker clustering technique provides a significant diarization error rate (DER) improvement than GMM based BIC\nclustering technique. | 2015 | MASK+: Data-driven regions selection for acoustic fingerprintingabstractAcoustic fingerprinting is the process to deterministically obtain a compact representation of an audio segment, used to compare multiple audio files or to efficiently search for a file within a big database. Recently, we proposed a novel fingerprint named MASK (Masked Audio Spectral Keypoints) that encodes the relationship between pairs of spectral regions around a single spectral energy peak into a binary representation. In the original proposal the configuration of location and size of the regions pairs was determined manually to optimally encode how energy flows around the spectral peak. Such manual selection has always been considered as a weakness in the process as it might not be adapted to the actual data being represented. In this paper we address this problem by proposing a unsupervised, data-driven method based on mutual information theory to automatically define an optimal MASK fingerprint structure. Audio retrieval experiments optimizing for data distorted with additive Gaussian white noise show that the proposed method is much more robust than the original MASK and a well known acoustic fingerprint. | 2015 | Effect of gender and call duration on customer satisfaction in call center big dataabstractCustomer center call data is typically collected by organiza-tions and corporations in order to improve customer experience through the analysis of such call data. In this paper, we report our findings when analysing more than 26 thousand calls to the call centers of a large corporation in a Latin American country. We focus on the impact of gender and call duration on self-reported customer satisfaction. Speech-based gender detection technology is employed to automatically detect the gender of the customer and the agent involved in the calls. A significant correlation is found between self-reported customer satisfaction at the end of the call and gender homophily between the cus-tomer and the call center’s agent. Interestingly, we do not find any significant effect of call duration on satisfaction. | 2015 | Using voice-quality measurements with prosodic and spectral features for speaker diarizationabstractJitter and shimmer voice-quality measurements have been successfully used to detect voice pathologies and classify different speaking styles. In this paper, we investigate the usefulness of jitter and shimmer voice measurements in the framework of the speaker diarization task. The combination of jitter and shimmer voice-quality features with the long-term prosodic and short-term spectral features is explored in a subset of the Augmented Multi-party Interaction (AMI) corpus, a multi-party and spontaneous speech set of recordings. The best results have been obtained by fusing the voice-quality features with the prosodic ones at the feature level, and then fusing them with the spectral features at the score level. Experimental results show more than 20% relative DER improvement compared to the spectral baseline system. Abraham Woubie, Jordi Luque, Javier Hernando |

| 2014 | Sentiment retrieval on web reviews using spontaneous natural speechabstractThis paper addresses the problem of document retrieval based on sentiment polarity criteria. A query based on natural spontaneous speech, expressing an opinion about a certain topic, is used to search a repository of documents containing favorable or unfavorable opinions. The goal is to retrieve documents whose opinions more closely resemble the one in the query. A semantic system based on speech transcripts is augmented with information from full-length text articles. Posterior probabilities extracted from the articles are used to regularize their transcription counterparts. This paper makes three important contributions. First, we introduce a framework for polarity analysis of sentiments that can accommodate combinations of different modalities capable of dealing with the absence of any modality. Second, we show that it is possible to improve average precision on speech transcriptions' sentiment retrieval by means of regularization. Third, we demonstrate the robustness of our approach by training regularizers on one dataset, while performing sentiment retrieval experiments, with substantial gains, on another dataset. | 2014 | Inferring social relationships in a phone call from a single party's speechabstractPeople usually speak differently depending on who they talk to. Based on this hypothesis, in this paper we propose an automatic method to detect the social relationship between two people based solely on a set of acoustic and conversational characteristics. We argue that changes in these features of an individual reflect the social relationship with the other person. To infer relationship we only require the speech of one of the conversation partners and the interaction patterns between both speakers. We validate the proposed system using a real-life telephone database with calls made by several speakers to close family members and to their partners. We trained a classifier using a boosting algorithm on a set of conversational and acoustic features and use it to classify calls according to the social relationship between both speakers. Tests performed on models trained on single speaker's data show that for most people such prediction is feasible. We also show that these characteristics generalize quite well across speakers, achieving around 75% accuracy when both sets of features are combined. | 2014 | Audio-to-text alignment for speech recognition with very limited resourcesabstractIn this paper we present our efforts in building a speech recognizer constrained by the availability of very limited resources. We consider that neither proper training databases nor initial acoustic models are available for the target language. Moreover, for the experiments shown here, we use grapheme-based speech recognizers. Most prior work in the area use initial acoustic models, trained on the target or a similar language, to force-align new data and then retrain the models with it. In the proposed approach a speech recognizer is trained from scratch by using audio recordings aligned with (sometimes approximate) text transcripts. All training data has been harvested online (e.g. audiobooks, parliamentary speeches). First, the audio is decoded into a phoneme sequence by an off-theshelf phonetic recognizer in Hungarian. Phoneme sequences are then aligned to the normalized text transcripts through dynamic programming. Correspondence between phonemes and graphemes is done through a matrix of approximate sound-tographeme matching. Finally, the aligned data is split into short audio/text segments and the speech recognizer is trained using Kaldi toolkit. Alignment experiments performed for Catalan and Spanish show the feasibility to obtain accurate alignments that can be used to successfully train a speech recognizer. | 2012 | Simultaneous Speech Detection With Spatial Features for Speaker DiarizationabstractSimultaneous speech poses a challenging problem for conventional speaker diarization systems. In meeting data, a substantial amount of missed speech error is due to speaker overlaps, since usually only one speaker label per segment is assigned. Furthermore, simultaneous speech included in training data can lead to corrupt speaker models and thus worse segmentation performance. In this paper, we propose the use of three spatial cross-correlation-based features together with spectral information for speaker overlap detection on distant microphones. Different microphone-pair data are fused by means of principal component analysis. We have obtained an improvement of the speaker diarization system over the baseline by discarding overlap segments from model training and assigning two speaker labels to them according to likelihoods in Viterbi decoding. In experiments conducted on the AMI Meeting corpus, we achieve a relative DER reduction of 11.2% and 17.0% for single- and multi-site data, respectively. The improvement of clustering with techniques such as beamforming and TDOA-feature stream also leads to a higher effectiveness of the overlap labeling algorithm. Preliminary experiments with NIST RT data show DER improvement on the RT'09 meeting recordings as well. Martin Zelenák, Carlos Segura, Jordi Luque, Javier Hernando |

| 2011 | Parallel Transformation Network features for speaker recognitionabstractThe use of speaker adaptation transforms as features for speaker recognition is an appealing alternative to conventional short-term cepstral features. In general, this kind of methods are language dependent and limited by the need of speech recognition in the client speakers language. In this paper, we generalize a recently pro posed method -named Transformation Network features with SVM modeling- in order to become language independent and overcome the need for accurate speech recognition. This is accomplished by using a set of parallel acoustic models in several different languages to obtain a high-dimensional Parallel Transformation Network feature vector for speaker characterization. | 2008 | Clustering initialization based on spatial information for speaker diarization of meetingsabstractThis paper proposes an initialization for an agglomerative\nsystem applied to speaker diarization in the meeting environment.\nThe initialization is based on a previous clustering of the\ntemporal sequence generated by the estimation of the Time Delay\nof Arrival (TDOA) among pair of sensors. That initial clustering\nhas the purpose of obtaining initial classes with speaker\ninformation from a sole speaker. The aim is to ensure the purity\nof the initial segments based on the position of the speakers in\na meeting along time. The TDOA initialization was tested with\nthe dataset used in the RT07s evaluation where an improvement\nof the diariazation error rate is obtained with respect to the classical\nuniform initialization. The most of the experiments show\nthat the purity of the beginning segments leads to a better clustering\non the posterior hierarchical strategy based on cepstral\nfeatures.
