2024 Towards Fine-Grained HBOE with Rendered Orientation Set and Laplace Smoothing
abstract
Human body orientation estimation (HBOE) aims to estimate the orientation of a human body relative to the camera’s frontal view. Despite recent advancements in this field, there still exist limitations in achieving fine-grained results. We identify certain defects and propose corresponding approaches as follows: 1). Existing datasets suffer from non-uniform angle distributions, resulting in sparse image data for certain angles. To provide comprehensive and high-quality data, we introduce RMOS (Rendered Model Orientation Set), a rendered dataset comprising 150K accurately labeled human instances with a wide range of orientations. 2). Directly using one-hot vector as labels may overlook the similarity between angle labels, leading to poor supervision. And converting the predictions from radians to degrees enlarges the regression error. To enhance supervision, we employ Laplace smoothing to vectorize the label, which contains more information. For fine-grained predictions, we adopt weighted Smooth-L1-loss to align predictions with the smoothed-label, thus providing robust supervision. 3). Previous works ignore body-part-specific information, resulting in coarse predictions. By employing local-window self-attention, our model could utilize different body part information for more precise orientation estimations. We validate the effectiveness of our method in the benchmarks with extensive experiments and show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art. 2024 Few-shot Hybrid Domain Adaptation of Image Generator
abstract
Can a pre-trained generator be adapted to the hybrid of multiple target domains and generate images with integrated attributes of them? In this work, we introduce a new task -- Few-shot $\textit{Hybrid Domain Adaptation}$ (HDA). Given a source generator and several target domains, HDA aims to acquire an adapted generator that preserves the integrated attributes of all target domains, without overriding the source domain's characteristics. Compared with $\textit{Domain Adaptation}$ (DA), HDA offers greater flexibility and versatility to adapt generators to more composite and expansive domains. Simultaneously, HDA also presents more challenges than DA as we have access only to images from individual target domains and lack authentic images from the hybrid domain. To address this issue, we introduce a discriminator-free framework that directly encodes different domains' images into well-separable subspaces. To achieve HDA, we propose a novel directional subspace loss comprised of a distance loss and a direction loss. Concretely, the distance loss blends the attributes of all target domains by reducing the distances from generated images to all target subspaces. The direction loss preserves the characteristics from the source domain by guiding the adaptation along the perpendicular to subspaces. Experiments show that our method can obtain numerous domain-specific attributes in a single adapted generator, which surpasses the baseline methods in semantic similarity, image fidelity, and cross-domain consistency.

2017 Rate-coverage analysis and optimization for joint audio-video multimedia retrieval
abstract
In this work, we consider the problem of automatic content retrieval (ACR) using joint audio-video fingerprints. We focus on how to balance the query accuracy and the size of fingerprint, and how to allocate the fingerprint bits to video and audio frames to maximize the query accuracy. By introducing a novel concept called coverage, which is highly correlated to the query accuracy, we are able to construct a rate-coverage model and formulate the joint audio-video fingerprint bit rate allocation into a dynamic programming optimization problem. Our experimental results demonstrate that, compared to existing approaches, our method improves the retrieval accuracy by up to 25% while using 60% of the original fingerprint bit rate.

2017 Spatially supervised recurrent convolutional neural networks for visual object tracking
abstract
In this paper, we develop a new approach of spatially supervised recurrent convolutional neural networks for visual object tracking. Our recurrent convolutional network exploits the history of locations as well as the distinctive visual features learned by the deep neural networks. Inspired by recent bounding box regression methods for object detection, we study the regression capability of Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) in the temporal domain, and propose to concatenate high-level visual features produced by convolutional networks with region information. In contrast to existing deep learning based trackers that use binary classification for region candidates, we use regression for direct prediction of the tracking locations both at the convolutional layer and at the recurrent unit. Our experimental results on challenging benchmark video tracking datasets show that our tracker is competitive with state-of-the-art approaches while maintaining low computational cost.

2013 Ensemble Video Object Cut in Highly Dynamic Scenes
abstract
We consider video object cut as an ensemble of frame-level background-foreground object classifiers which fuses information across frames and refine their segmentation results in a collaborative and iterative manner. Our approach addresses the challenging issues of modeling of background with dynamic textures and segmentation of foreground objects from cluttered scenes. We construct patch-level bag-of-words background models to effectively capture the background motion and texture dynamics. We propose a foreground salience graph (FSG) to characterize the similarity of an image patch to the bag-of-words background models in the temporal domain and to neighboring image patches in the spatial domain. We incorporate this similarity information into a graph-cut energy minimization framework for foreground object segmentation. The background-foreground classification results at neighboring frames are fused together to construct a foreground probability map to update the graph weights. The resulting object shapes at neighboring frames are also used as constraints to guide the energy minimization process during graph cut. Our extensive experimental results and performance comparisons over a diverse set of challenging videos with dynamic scenes, including the new Change Detection Challenge Dataset, demonstrate that the proposed ensemble video object cut method outperforms various state-of-the-art algorithms.

1996 On Chinese Text Retrieval
abstract
In previous studies, Chinese text retrieval has often been dealt with on the character basis. This approach is not suited to deal with complex queries. We suggest that Chirmse text retrieval should work with words inslead of characters. The crucial problem is to segment originally continuous Chinese texts into words. In this paper, wc Ilrsi propose a hybrid segmentation approach which unifies the commonly used approaches. The systcm SMART is then udaptcd to index the segmented Chinese texls. Finally, wc suggest that Chinese text retrieval should move further to include a thesaurus in order to cope with dle rich vocabulary of Chinese.
