1998 Space/Time-Efficient Scheduling and Execution of Parallel Irregular Computations
abstract
In this article we investigate the trade-off between time and space efficiency in scheduling and executing parallel irregular computations on distributed-memory machines. We employ acyclic task dependence graphs to model irregular parallelism with mixed granularity, and we use direct remote memory access to support fast communication. We propose new scheduling techniques and a run-time active memory management scheme to improve memory utilization while retaining good time efficiency, and we provide a theoretical analysis on correctness and performance. This work is implemented in the context of the RAPID system which uses an inspector/executor approach to parallelize irregular computations at run-ti me. We demostrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques on several irregular applications such as sparse matrix code and the fast multipole method for particle simulation. Our experimental results on Cray-T3E show that problems large sizes can be solved under limited space capacity, and that the loss of execution efficiency caused by the extra memory management overhead is reasonable.

1998 Efficient Sparse LU Factorization with Partial Pivoting on Distributed Memory Architectures
abstract
A sparse LU factorization based on Gaussian elimination with partial pivoting (GEPP) is important to many scientific applications, but it is still an open problem to develop a high performance GEPP code on distributed memory machines. The main difficulty is that partial pivoting operations dynamically change computation and nonzero fill-in structures during the elimination process. This paper presents an approach called S* for parallelizing this problem on distributed memory machines. The S* approach adopts static symbolic factorization to avoid run-time control overhead, incorporates 2D L/U supemode partitioning and amalgamation strategies to improve caching performance, and exploits irregular task parallelism embedded in sparse LU using asynchronous computation scheduling. The paper discusses and compares the algorithms using 1D and 2D data mapping schemes, and presents experimental studies on Cray-T3D and T3E. The performance results for a set of nonsymmetric benchmark matrices are very encouraging, and S* has achieved up to 6.878 GFLOPS on 128 T3E nodes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest performance ever achieved for this challenging problem and the previous record was 2.583 GFLOPS on shared memory machines.

1997 Space and Time Efficient Execution of Parallel Irregular Computation
abstract
Solving problems of large sizes is an important goal for parallel machines with multiple CPU and memory resources. In this paper, issues of efficient execution of overhead-sensitive parallel irregular computation under memory constraints are addressed. The irregular parallelism is modeled by task dependence graphs with mixed granularities. The trade-off in achieving both time and space efficiency is investigated. The main difficulty of designing efficient run-time system support is caused by the use of fast communication primitives available on modern parallel architectures. A run-time active memory management scheme and new scheduling techniques are proposed to improve memory utilization while retaining good time efficiency, and a theoretical analysis on correctness and performance is provided. This work is implemented in the context of RAPID system [5] which provides run-time support for parallelizing irregular code on distributed memory machines and the effectiveness of the proposed...

1997 Heuristic Algorithms for Scheduling Iterative Task Computations on Distributed Memory Machines
abstract
Many partitioned scientific programs can be modeled as iterative executions of computational tasks and represented by iterative task graphs (ITGs). An ITG may or may not have dependence cycles. In this paper, we consider the symbolic scheduling of ITGs on distributed memory architectures with nonzero communication overhead and propose heuristic algorithms for scheduling both cyclic and acyclic ITGs without searching an entire iteration space. Our approach incorporates techniques of software pipelining, graph unfolding, directed acyclic graph (DAG) scheduling, and load balancing. We analyze the asymptotic optimality of the algorithms to show that the derived schedules are competitive to optimal solutions. We also study the sensitivity of scheduling performance on inaccurate weights. Finally, we present experimental results to demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimization techniques.

1996 Run-Time Compilation for Parallel Sparse Matrix Computations
abstract
Run-time compilation techniques have been shown effective for automating the parallelization of loops with unstructured indirect data accessing patterns. However, it is still an open problem to efficiently parallelize sparse matrix factorizations commonly used in iterative numerical problems. The difficulty is that a factorization process contains irregularlyinterleaved communication and computation with varying granularities and it is hard to obtain scalable performance on distributed memory machines. In this paper, we present an inspector/executor approach for parallelizing such applications by embodying automatic graph scheduling techniques to optimize interleaved communication and computation. We describe a run-time system called RAPID that provides a set of library functions for specifying irregular data objects and tasks that access these objects. The system extracts a task dependence graph from data access patterns, and executes tasks efficiently on a distributed memory machine....

1996 Sparse LU Factorization with Partial Pivoting on Distributed Memory Machines
abstract
Sparse LU factorization with partial pivoting is important to many scientific applications, but the effective parallelization of this algorithm is still an open problem. The main difficulty is that partial pivoting operations make structures of L and U factors unpredictable beforehand. This paper presents a novel approach called S* for parallelizing this problem on distributed memory machines. S* incorporates static symbolic factorization to avoid run-time control overhead and uses nonsymmetric L/U supernode partitioning and amalgamation strategies to maximize the use of BLAS-3 routines. The irregular task parallelism embedded in sparse LU is exploited using graph scheduling and efficient run-time support techniques which optimize communication, overlap computation with communication and balance processor loads. The experimental results on the Cray-T3D with a set of Harwell-Boeing nonsymmetric matrices are very encouraging and good scalability has been achieved. Even compared to a highly optimized sequential code, the parallel speedups are still impressive considering the current status of sparse LU research.
