Path Generation and Evaluation in Video Games: A Nonparametric Statistical ApproachabstractNavigation path traces play a crucial role in video game design, serving as a vital resource for both enhancing player engagement and fine-tuning non-playable character behavior. Generating such paths with human-like realism can enrich the overall gaming experience, and evaluating path traces can provide game designers insights into player interactions. Despite the impressive recent advancements in deep learning-based generative modeling, the video game industry hesitates to adopt such models for path generation, often citing their complex training requirements and interpretability challenges. To address these problems, we propose a novel path generation and evaluation approach that is grounded in principled nonparametric statistics and provides precise control while offering interpretable insights. Our path generation method fuses two statistical techniques: (1) nonparametric model-free transformations that capture statistical characteristics of path traces through time; and (2) copula models that capture statistical dependencies in space. For path evaluation, we adapt a nonparametric three-sample hypothesis test designed to determine if the generated paths are overfit (mimicking the original data too closely) or underfit (diverging too far from it). We demonstrate the precision and reliability of our proposed methods with empirical analysis on two existing gaming benchmarks to showcase controlled generation of diverse navigation paths. Notably, our novel path generator can be fine-tuned with user controllable parameters to create navigation paths that exhibit varying levels of human-likeness in contrast to those produced by neural network-based agents. | 2022 | Evaluating Navigation Behavior of Agents in Games using Non-Parametric StatisticsabstractRecent advancements in deep reinforcement learning have demonstrated highly skilled agents that are capable of complex behavior. In video games, such agents are increasingly deployed as non-playable characters (NPCs) to enhance the gaming experience, as convincing human-like behavior is known to increase player engagement. However, the believability of an agent’s behavior is often measured solely by its proficiency at a given task, which alone is not sufficient to discern human-likeness. In this paper, we build a non-parametric two-sample hypothesis test to compare the behaviors of NPCs to those of human players using distributions of their movement patterns. We show that the resulting p-value metric not only aligns with anonymous human judgment of human-like behavior, but it can also be used as a measure of similarity. Ian Colbert, Mehdi Saeedi

Content-aware video encoding for cloud gamingabstractCloud gaming allows users with thin-clients to play complex games on their end devices as the bulk of processing is offloaded to remote servers. A thin-client is only required to have basic decoding capabilities which exist on most modern devices. The result of the remote processing is an encoded video that gets streamed to the client. As modern games are complex in terms of graphics and motion, the encoded video requires high bandwidth to provide acceptable Quality of Experience (QoE) to end users. The cost incurred by the cloud gaming service provider to stream the encoded video at such high bandwidth grows rapidly with the increase in the number of users. In this paper, we present a content-aware video encoding method for cloud gaming (referred to as CAVE) to improve the perceptual quality of the streamed video frames with comparable bandwidth requirements. This is a challenging task because of the stringent requirements on latency in cloud gaming, which impose additional restrictions on frame sizes as well as processing time to limit the total latency perceived by clients. Unlike many of the previous works, the proposed method is suitable for the state-of-the-art High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) encoder, which by itself offers substantial bitrate savings compared to prior encoders. The proposed method leverages information from the game such as the Regions-of-Interest (ROIs), and optimizes the quality by allocating different amounts of bits to various areas in the video frames. Through actual implementation in an open-source cloud gaming platform, we show that the proposed method achieves quality gains in ROIs that can be translated to bitrate savings between 21% and 46% against the baseline HEVC encoder and between 12% and 89% against the closest work in the literature. | 2014 | Qubit placement to minimize communication overhead in 2D quantum architecturesabstractRegular, local-neighbor topologies of quantum architectures restrict interactions to adjacent qubits, which in turn increases the latency of quantum circuits mapped to these architectures. To alleviate this effect, optimization methods that consider qubit-to-qubit interactions in 2D grid architectures are presented in this paper. The proposed approaches benefit from Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation for the qubit placement problem. Simulation results on various benchmarks show 27% on average reduction in communication overhead between qubits compared to best results of previous work. | 2014 | Cofactor Sharing for Reversible Logic SynthesisabstractImproving circuit realization of known quantum algorithms by CAD techniques has benefits for quantum experimentalists. In this article, the problem of synthesizing a given function on a set of ancillea is addressed. The proposed approach benefits from extensive sharing of cofactors among cubes that appear on function outputs. Accordingly, it can be considered a multilevel logic optimization technique for reversible circuits. In particular, the suggested approach can efficiently implement any n -input, m -output lookup table (LUT) by a reversible circuit. This problem has interesting applications in the Shor's number-factoring algorithm and in quantum walk on sparse graphs. Simulation results reveal that the proposed cofactor-sharing synthesis algorithm has a significant impact on reducing the size of modular exponentiation circuits for Shor's quantum factoring algorithm, oracle circuits in quantum walk on sparse graphs, and the well-known MCNC benchmarks. | 2013 | Optimization of quantum circuits for interaction distance in linear nearest neighbor architecturesabstractOptimization of the interaction distance between qubits to map a quantum circuit into one-dimensional quantum architectures is addressed. The problem is formulated as the Minimum Linear Arrangement (MinLA) problem. To achieve this, an interaction graph is constructed for a given circuit, and multiple instances of the MinLA problem for selected subcircuits of the initial circuit are formulated and solved. In addition, a lookahead technique is applied to improve the cost of the proposed solution which examines different subcircuit candidates. Experiments on quantum circuits for quantum Fourier transform and reversible benchmarks show the effectiveness of the approach. Alireza Shafaei, Mehdi Saeedi, Massoud Pedram

Reversible logic synthesis of k-input, m-output lookup tablesabstractImproving circuit realization of known quantum algorithms by CAD techniques has benefits for quantum experimentalists. In this paper, we address the problem of synthesizing a given k-input, m-output lookup table (LUT) by a reversible circuit. This problem has interesting applications in the famous Shor's number-factoring algorithm and in quantum walk on sparse graphs. For LUT synthesis, our approach targets the number of control lines in multiple-control Toffoli gates to reduce synthesis cost. To achieve this, we propose a multi-level optimization technique for reversible circuits to benefit from shared cofactors. To reuse output qubits and/or zero-initialized ancillae, we un-compute intermediate cofactors. Our experiments reveal that the proposed LUT synthesis has a significant impact on reducing the size of modular exponentiation circuits for Shor's quantum factoring algorithm, oracle circuits in quantum walk on sparse graphs, and the well-known MCNC benchmarks. | 2011 | Reversible Circuit Optimization Via Leaving the Boolean DomainabstractFor years, the quantum/reversible circuit community has been convinced that: 1) the addition of auxiliary quantum bits (qubits) is instrumental in constructing a smaller quantum circuit, and 2) the introduction of quantum gates inside reversible circuits may result in more efficient designs. This paper presents a systematic approach to optimizing reversible (and quantum) circuits via the introduction of auxiliary qubits and quantum gates inside circuit designs. This advances our understanding of what may be achieved with 1) and 2). Dmitri Maslov, Mehdi Saeedi

Rule-based optimization of reversible circuitsabstractReversible logic has applications in various research areas including low-power design and quantum computation. In this paper, a rule-based optimization approach for reversible circuits is proposed which uses both negative and positive control Toffoli gates during the optimization. To this end, a set of rules for removing NOT gates and optimizing sub-circuits with common-target gates are proposed. To evaluate the proposed approach, the best-reported synthesized circuits and the results of a recent synthesis algorithm which uses both negative and positive controls are used. Our experiments reveal the potential of the proposed approach in optimizing synthesized circuits. Mona Arabzadeh, Mehdi Saeedi, Morteza Saheb Zamani

Reversible circuit synthesis using a cycle-based approachabstractReversible logic has applications in various research areas, including signal processing, cryptography and quantum computation. In this article, direct NCT-based synthesis of a given k -cycle in a cycle-based synthesis scenario is examined. To this end, a set of seven building blocks is proposed that reveals the potential of direct synthesis of a given permutation to reduce both quantum cost and average runtime. To synthesize a given large cycle, we propose a decomposition algorithm to extract the suggested building blocks from the input specification. Then, a synthesis method is introduced that uses the building blocks and the decomposition algorithm. Finally, a hybrid synthesis framework is suggested that uses the proposed cycle-based synthesis method in conjunction with one of the recent NCT-based synthesis approaches which is based on Reed-Muller (RM) spectra. The time complexity and the effectiveness of the proposed synthesis approach are analyzed in detail. Our analyses show that the proposed hybrid framework leads to a better quantum cost in the worst-case scenario compared to the previously presented methods. The proposed framework always converges and typically synthesizes a given specification very fast compared to the available synthesis algorithms. Besides, the quantum costs of benchmark functions are improved about 20% on average (55% in the best case). Mehdi Saeedi, Morteza Saheb Zamani, Mehdi Sedighi, Zahra Sasanian

A cycle-based synthesis algorithm for reversible logicabstractSeveral algorithms have been proposed for the synthesis of reversible circuits. In this paper, a cycle-based synthesis algorithm for reversible logic, based on the NCT library, has been proposed. In other words, direct implementation of a single 3-cycle, a pair of 3-cycles and a pair of 2-cycles have been explored and used to propose an efficient Toffoli-based synthesis algorithm for reversible circuits. The synthesis algorithm decomposes a given large cycle into a set of single 3-cycles, pairs of 3-cycles and pair of 2-cycles and synthesizes the resulted cycles directly. Our experimental results show that the proposed synthesis algorithm can outperform the available 2-cycle-based approach about 34% on average. In addition, several discussions for the generalization of the proposed method to the 2m-cycles are given. Zahra Sasanian, Mehdi Saeedi, Mehdi Sedighi, Morteza Saheb Zamani

Moving forward: A non-search based synthesis method toward efficient CNOT-based quantum circuit synthesis algorithmsabstractQuantum information processing is in the beginning stages. Among open research problems, quantum circuit synthesis has recently received significant attention. In this paper, we propose a new non-search based moving forward synthesis algorithm (MOSAIC) for CNOT-based quantum circuits. Compared with the widely used search-based methods, MOSAIC is guaranteed to produce a result and can lead to a solution with much fewer steps. To evaluate the proposed algorithms, different circuits taken from the literature are used. The experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. | 2008 | Multi-Objective Statistical Yield Enhancement using Evolutionary AlgorithmabstractIt has been shown that several process parameters encounter variation in the very deep submicron era. Due to the increased power and performance variability, a multi-objective variability-aware yield optimization method is crucial. However, most of current yield optimization methods use greedy single objective optimization approach. In this paper, a comprehensive and multi-objective yield optimization framework is proposed to consider the effects of both power and performance yield degradation. In other words, an evolutionary gate sizing optimization approach is introduced to be used in the proposed framework to enhance yield, significantly. Compared with recent yield optimization algorithms and, the proposed framework leads to better results for the attempted circuits. In addition, the independency of proposed framework on selected power and delay analysis techniques makes it suitable for future investigations as using dual threshold voltage assignment approach. | 2008 | An Efficient Non-Tree Clock Routing Algorithm for Reducing Delay UncertaintyabstractThe design of clock distribution networks in synchronous digital systems presents great challenges. In other words, controlling the clock signal delay in the presence of process parameter variations is a major problem in the design of high-speed synchronous circuits. In this paper, an efficient algorithm is presented to improve the tolerance of a clock distribution network against process variation. This algorithm generates a non-tree clock network for reducing uncertainty of the clock signal delay introduced by process variation. The non-tree clock network is generated by inserting cross links in appropriate points taking critical paths into account. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm several HSPICE-based Monte Carlo simulations were done. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can lead to a significant reduction in the deviation of signal propagation delay of critical paths and the skew variability without considerable increase in the total wirelength. | 2007 | Algebraic Characterization of CNOT-Based Quantum Circuits with its Applications on Logic SynthesisabstractThe exponential speed up of quantum algorithms and the fundamental limits of current CMOS process for future design technology have directed attentions toward quantum circuits. In this paper, the matrix specification of a broad category of quantum circuits, i.e. CNOT-based circuits, are investigated. We prove that the matrix elements of CNOT-based circuits can only be zeros or ones. In addition, the columns or rows of such a matrix have exactly one element with the value of 1. Furthermore, we show that these specifications can be used to synthesize CNOT-based quantum circuits. In other words, a new scheme is introduced to convert the matrix representation into its SOP equivalent using a novel quantum-based Karnaugh map extension. We then apply a search-based method to transform the obtained SOP into a CNOT-based circuit. Experimental results prove the correctness of the proposed concept. | 2006 | Prediction and reduction of routing congestionabstractRouting congestion is a critical issue in deep submicron design technology and it becomes one of the most challenging problems in today's design flow. This paper presents a true probabilistic congestion prediction method based on router's intelligence to be used in the placement stage of physical design flow. Experimental results show that for IBM-PLACE benchmarks, our prediction algorithm estimates the congestion more accurately than a recent method by about 19%. Furthermore, a new congestion reduction algorithm is presented which is based on contour plotting. Our experiments show that our algorithm reduces congestion by about 28% on average. In addition, comparing our results with a recent approach shows that our reduction technique reduces congestion more by about 13%. Mehdi Saeedi, Morteza Saheb Zamani, Ali Jahanian 0001
