| 2007 | The software interface for a cluster interconnect based on the Kautz digraphabstractThe Kautz digraph (Elspas et al., 1968) has been described as the ideal communication network for parallel computers, but it is generally unknown in the engineering community, and has never previously been used in a commercial product. We will define and characterize it in relation to HPC clusters, then discuss some of the implementation issues encountered in developing it as a large-scale cluster interconnect. The software interface to this interconnect is explained with some initial experiences with performance benchmarks. Jud Leonard, Avi Purkayastha, Matt Reilly, Tushar Mohan |

| 2007 | Collective communication: theory, practice, and experienceabstractAbstract We discuss the design and high‐performance implementation of collective communications operations on distributed‐memory computer architectures. Using a combination of known techniques (many of which were first proposed in the 1980s and early 1990s) along with careful exploitation of communication modes supported by MPI, we have developed implementations that have improved performance in most situations compared to those currently supported by public domain implementations of MPI such as MPICH. Performance results from a large Intel Xeon/Pentium 4 (R) processor cluster are included. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. | 2004 | On optimizing collective communicationabstractWe discuss issues related to the high-performance implementation of collective communications operations on distributed-memory computer architectures. | 2004 | Attaining higher performance in collective communicationabstractSummary form only given. It has long been thought that research into collective communication algorithms on distributed-memory parallel computers has been exhausted. This project demonstrates that the implementations available as part of widely-used libraries are suboptimal. We demonstrate this through the implementation of the "reduce-scatter" collective communication and comparison with the MPICH implementation of MPI. Performance on a large cluster is reported. | 2002 | A framework for performance modeling and predictionabstractCycle-accurate simulation is far too slow for modeling the expected performance of full parallel applications on large HPC systems. And just running an application on a system and observing wallclock time tells you nothing about why the application performs as it does (and is anyway impossible on yet-to-be-built systems). Here we present a framework for performance modeling and prediction that is faster than cycle-accurate simulation, more informative than simple benchmarking, and is shown useful for performance investigations in several dimensions.
