2022 Hardware Implementation of High-Performance Polynomial Multiplication for KEM Saber
abstract
Recent advances in quantum computing have initiated a new round of cryptosystem innovation as the existing public-key cryptosystems are proven to be vulnerable to quantum attacks. Several types of cryptographic algorithms have been proposed for possible post-quantum cryptography (PQC) candidates and the lattice-based key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) Saber is one of the most promising algorithms. Noticing that the polynomial multiplication over ring is the key arithmetic operation of KEM Saber, in this paper, we propose a novel strategy for efficient implementation of polynomial multiplication on the hardware platform. First of all, we present the proposed mathematical derivation process for polynomial multiplication. Then, the proposed hardware structure is provided. Finally, field-programmable gate array (FPGA) based implementation results are obtained, and it is shown that the proposed design has better performance than the existing ones. The proposed polynomial multiplication can be further deployed to construct efficient hardware cryptoprocessors for KEM Saber.

2021 CROP: FPGA Implementation of High-Performance Polynomial Multiplication in Saber KEM based on Novel Cyclic-Row Oriented Processing Strategy
abstract
The rapid advancement in quantum technology has initiated a new round of post-quantum cryptography (PQC) related exploration. The key encapsulation mechanism (KEM) Saber is an important module lattice-based PQC, which has been selected as one of the PQC finalists in the ongoing National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standardization process. On the other hand, however, efficient hardware implementation of KEM Saber has not been well covered in the literature. In this paper, therefore, we propose a novel cyclic-row oriented processing (CROP) strategy for efficient implementation of the key arithmetic operation of KEM Saber, i.e., the polynomial multiplication. The proposed work consists of three layers of interdependent efforts: (i) first of all, we have formulated the main operation of KEM Saber into desired mathematical forms to be further developed into CROP based algorithms, i.e., the basic version and the advanced higher-speed version; (ii) then, we have followed the proposed CROP strategy to innovatively transfer the derived two algorithms into desired polynomial multiplication structures with the help of a series of algorithm-architecture co-implementation techniques; (iii) finally, detailed complexity analysis and implementation results have shown that the proposed polynomial multiplication structures have better area-time complexities than the state-of-the-art solutions. Specifically, the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementation results show that the proposed design, e.g., the basic version has at least less 11.2% area-delay product (ADP) than the best competing one (Cyclone V device). The proposed high-performance polynomial multipliers offer not only efficient operation for output results delivery but also possess low-complexity feature brought by CROP strategy. The outcome of this work is expected to provide useful references for further development and standardization process of KEM Saber.

2020 Efficient Subquadratic Space Complexity Digit-Serial Multipliers over GF(2m) based on Bivariate Polynomial Basis Representation
abstract
Digit-serial finite field multipliers over GF(2m) with subquadratic space complexity are critical components to many applications such as elliptic curve cryptography. In this paper, we propose a pair of novel digit-serial multipliers based on bivariate polynomial basis (BPB). Firstly, we have proposed a novel digit-serial BPB multiplication algorithm based on a new decomposition strategy. Secondly, the proposed algorithm is properly mapped into a pair of pipelined and non-pipelined digit-serial multipliers. Lastly, through the detailed complexity analysis and comparison, the proposed designs are found to have less area-time complexities than the competing ones.

2019 Embracing Systolic: Super Systolization of Large-Scale Circulant Matrix-vector Multiplication on FPGA with Subquadratic Space Complexity
abstract
The recent advance in artificial intelligence (AI) technology has led to a new round of systolic structure innovation. Many AI accelerators have employed systolic structure to realize the core large-scale matrix-vector multiplication for high-performance processing, which has a complexity of $o(n^2)$ for matrix size of $n\times n$ (difficult to be implemented on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform). To overcome this drawback, in this paper, we propose a super systolization strategy to implement the core circulant matrix-vector multiplication into a systolic structure with subquadratic space complexity. The proposed effort is carried out through two stages of coherent interdependent efforts: (i) a novel matrix-vector multiplication algorithm based on Toeplitz matrix-vector product (TMVP) approach is proposed to obtain subquadratic space complexity; (ii) a series of optimization techniques are introduced to map the proposed algorithm into desired systolic structure. Finally, detailed complexity analysis and comparison have been conducted to prove the efficiency of the proposed strategy. The proposed strategy is highly efficient and can be extended in many neural network based hardware implementation platforms.

2019 LSM: Novel Low-Complexity Unified Systolic Multiplier over Binary Extension Field
abstract
Unified (hybrid field-size) systolic multiplier over GF(2m) (binary extension field) has attracted significant attentions from research communities recently as it can be used in reconfigurable cryptographic processors. In this paper, we present a novel Low-complexity unified Systolic Multiplier (LSM) design strategy to address the above mentioned challenge. First, a novel multiplication algorithm for unified implementation is proposed first with detailed mathematical derivation. Then, an efficient systolic structure is then presented based on the proposed algorithm (with the help of several mapping techniques). Finally, a thorough complexity analysis is given to verify the superior performance of the proposed design (the proposed structure involves better complexities than the newly reported design).

2019 Efficient Scalable Three Operand Multiplier Over GF(2^m) Based on Novel Decomposition Strategy
abstract
It is expected that efficient scalable three operand multiplier (STOM) over GF(2m) (polynomial basis) generally can provide quite a number of superior benefits such as low-complexity and flexibility on processing bits and thus is very ideal to many applications like elliptic curve cryptography and pairing cryptography. The actual efficient hardware implementation of STOM, however, is still not covered in the literature. Based on this consideration, in this paper, we propose a novel decomposition strategy based design scheme to obtain efficient STOM on hardware platforms. First of all, a novel decomposition strategy (summarized as Toeplitz Matrix Oriented Karatsuba Algorithm, TMOKA) based STOM is presented with detailed mathematical derivation. Then, the proposed STOM structure is introduced along with a number of optimization techniques. Finally, the complexity analysis and comparison have been given to confirm the efficiency of the proposed STOM, e.g., the proposed structure with scalable digit-size of 64 has at least 50.8% less area-delay product (ADP) than the TOM employing a newly reported finite field multiplier ([8]) on the FPGA platform. The proposed STOM can thus be extended and employed in many cryptographic applications.

2019 Low-Complexity Systolic Multiplier for GF(2m) using Toeplitz Matrix-Vector Product Method
abstract
Low-complexity systolic multipliers for GF(2m) are required in several high-performance cryptographic systems. In this paper, we propose a novel design strategy to derive efficient systolic multiplier for GF(2m) based on Toeplitz Matrix-Vector Product (TMVP) approach. The proposed work is carried out through two coherent interdependent stages. (i) A novel multiplication algorithm based on TMVP method to obtain subquadratic space complexity is proposed first. (ii) The proposed algorithm is then mapped unto to a novel and efficient architecture which is optimized further to derive a low-complexity systolic structure. The complexity analysis and comparison show that the proposed design outperforms the existing work. The proposed design can thus be used in many practical cryptosystems.

2019 Novel Systolization of Subquadratic Space Complexity Multipliers Based on Toeplitz Matrix-Vector Product Approach
abstract
Systolic finite field multiplier over GF(2m), because of its superior features such as high throughput and regularity, is highly desirable for many demanding cryptosystems. On the other side, however, obtaining high-performance systolic multiplier with relatively low hardware cost is still a challenging task due to the fact that the systolic structure usually involves large area complexity. Based on this consideration, in this paper, we propose to carry out two novel coherent interdependent efforts. First, a new digit-serial multiplication algorithm based on polynomial basis over binary field (GF(2m)) is proposed. Novel Toeplitz matrix-vector product (TMVP)-based decomposition strategy is employed to derive an efficient subquadratic space complexity. Second, The proposed algorithm is then innovatively mapped into a low-complexity systolic multiplier, which involves less area-time complexities than the existing ones. A series of resource optimization techniques also has been applied on the multiplier which optimizes further the proposed design (it is the first report on digit-serial systolic multiplier based on TMVP approach covering all irreducible polynomials, to the best of our knowledge). The following complexity analysis and comparison confirm the efficiency of the proposed multiplier, that is, it has lower area-delay product (ADP) than the existing ones. The extension of the proposed multiplier for bit-parallel implementation is also considered in this paper.

2019 Novel Bit-Parallel and Digit-Serial Systolic Finite Field Multipliers Over $GF(2^m)$ Based on Reordered Normal Basis
abstract
Efficient implementation of finite field multipliers based on a reordered normal basis (RNB) is highly desirable in the current/emerging cryptosystems since it offers almost free realization of squaring operation. Therefore, in this paper, we propose novel bit-parallel and digit-serial finite field multipliers over GF(2m) based on RNB. By efficient transformation of the core multiplication algorithm using a unique circular shifting feature, we have derived an efficient algorithm for low-complexity systolic mapping. Both bit-parallel and digit-serial structures of the multipliers are then obtained and optimized to enhance the area-time efficiency. We have also utilized the unique feature of the proposed multiplication algorithm to obtain the systolic multipliers by Karatsubalike decomposition. Detailed analysis and comparison show the superior performance of the proposed implementation. For example, the proposed regular and Karatsuba-based bit-parallel designs involve at least 48.4% less area-delay product (ADP) and 42.2% less power-delay product (PDP) than the best existing ones (37.7% and 55.3% less ADP and PDP on field-programmable gate array platform), respectively. The proposed multipliers, because of their lower area-time complexities, can be used for efficient realization of cryptographic applications.

2018 Low Area-Delay Complexity Digit-Level Parallel-In Serial-Out Multiplier Over GF(2m) Based on Overlap-Free Karatsuba Algorithm
abstract
Overlap-free Karatsuba algorithm (OFKA) is one of the Karatsuba algorithms (KAs) which can be employed to reduce the computation complexity of fast/high-precision polynomial based multiplication (the space complexity of the product can be reduced from O(m2) to O(mlog23)). Meanwhile, digit-level (DL) finite field multipliers over GF(2m), generally can be categorized as DL parallel-in serial-out (DL-PISO) and DL serial-in parallel-out (DL-SIPO) styles, have gained substantial attentions in cryptographic related applications (such as elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC)) recently due to their efficient performance in area-delay tradeoffs. In this paper, aim at deriving an efficient DL-PISO multiplier with sub-quadratic space complexity, we present a novel polynomial basis multiplication through a combination of three coherent interdependent efforts. First of all, a novel bivariate polynomial multiplication algorithm using two steps of reduction is presented. Then, a new DL-PISO polynomial basis multiplication algorithm using OFKA over GF(2m) is introduced as well as its corresponding structure. Finally, the complexity and comparison are detailed given to confirm the efficiency of the proposed DL-PISO multiplier over the existing DL-PISO and DL-SIPO designs, i.e., the proposed one has lower area-delay product (ADP) when compared with the competing ones. The proposed DL-PISO multiplier is highly regular and hence can be applied in many resource-constrained environments.

2017 Low-latency digit-serial dual basis multiplier for lightweight cryptosystems
abstract
Various cryptosystems, such as elliptic curve and pairing‐based cryptosystems, in resource‐constrained security applications rely on finite field multiplication. For applications such as these, a digit‐serial multiplier has the potential features to achieve a trade‐off between space and time complexities. The authors propose an efficient decomposition of the multiplication into four independent sub‐multiplication units to facilitate parallel processing, which is additionally facilitated by the systolic structures of the sub‐multiplication units. The proposed architecture uses a four‐bit scheme to construct a novel processing element, instead of using only one bit as is currently used in similar multipliers. The results of the synthesis show that the proposed digit‐serial dual basis multiplier eliminates up to 96% of the critical path delay.

2017 Low-Complexity Digit-Serial Multiplier Over $GF(2^{m})$ Based on Efficient Toeplitz Block Toeplitz Matrix-Vector Product Decomposition
abstract
In this paper, we have shown that a regular Toeplitz matrix-vector product (TMVP) can be transformed into a Toeplitz block TMVP (TBTMVP) using a suitable permutation matrix. Based on the TBTMVP representation, we have proposed a new (a,b)-way TBTMVP decomposition algorithm for implementing a digit-serial multiplication. Moreover, it is shown that, based on iterative block recombination, we can improve the space complexity of the proposed TBTMVP decomposition. From the synthesis results, we have shown that the proposed TBTMVP-based multiplier involves less area, less area-delay product, and higher throughput compared with the existing digit-serial multipliers.

2016 Area-Delay Efficient Digit-Serial Multiplier Based on k-Partitioning Scheme Combined With TMVP Block Recombination Approach
abstract
Shifted polynomial basis (SPB) and generalized polynomial basis (GPB) are two efficient bases of representation in binary extension fields, and are widely studied. In this paper, we use the GPB formulation to derive a new modified SPB (MSPB) representation for arbitrary irreducible trinomials and pentanomials. It is shown that the basis conversion from the MSPB to the SPB for trinomials is free of hardware cost. We have shown that multiplication based on SPB and MSPB representations can make use of Toeplitz matrix-vector product (TMVP) formulation. The existing TMVP block recombination (TMVPBR) approach is used here to derive an efficient k-partitioning TMVPBR decomposition for digit-serial double basis multiplication that can achieve subquadratic space complexity. From synthesis results, we have shown that the proposed multiplier has less area and less area-delay product compared with the existing digit-serial multipliers. We also show that the proposed multiplier using k-partitioning TMVPBR decomposition can provide a better tradeoff between time and space complexities.

2015 Efficient subquadratic parallel multiplier based on modified SPB of GF(2m)
abstract
Toeplitz matrix-vector product (TMVP) approach is a special case of Karatsuba algorithm to design subquadratic multiplier in GF(2m). In binary extension fields, shifted polynomial basis (SPB) is a variable basis representation, and is widely studied. SPB multiplication using coordinate transformation technique can transform TMVP formulas, however, this approach is only applied for the field constructed by all trinomials or special class of pentanomials. For this reason, we present a new modified SPB multiplication for an arbitrary irreducible pentanomial, and the proposed multiplication scheme has formed a TMVP formula.

2015 Systolic Gaussian Normal Basis Multiplier Architectures Suitable for High-Performance Applications
abstract
Normal basis multiplication in finite fields is vastly utilized in different applications, including error control coding and the like due to its advantageous characteristics and the fact that squaring of elements can be obtained without hardware complexity. In this brief, we present decomposition algorithms to develop novel systolic structures for digit-level Gaussian normal basis multiplication over GF(2m). The proposed architectures are suitable for high-performance applications, which require fast computations in finite fields with high throughputs. We also present the results of our application-specific integrated circuit synthesis using a 65-nm standard-cell library to benchmark the effectiveness of the proposed systolic architectures. The presented architectures for multiplication can result in more efficient and high-performance VLSI systems.

2014 A Linear Time Pessimistic Diagnosis Algorithm for Hypermesh Multiprocessor Systems under the PMC Model
abstract
In microprocessor-based systems, such as the cloud computing infrastructure, high reliability is essential. As multiprocessor systems become more widespread and increasingly complex, system-level diagnosis will increasingly be adopted to determine their robustness. In this paper, we consider a pessimistic diagnostic strategy for hypermesh multiprocessor systems under the PMC model. The pessimistic strategy is a diagnostic process whereby all faulty processors are correctly identified and at most one fault-free processor may be misjudged to be a faulty processor. We first determine the pessimistic diagnosability of a hypermesh to be${2}{{n}}({{k}} - {1}) - {{k}}$. We then propose an efficient pessimistic diagnostic algorithm to identify at most${ 2}{{n}}({{k}} - { 1}) - {{k}}$faults in${{O}}({{N}})$time, where${\mbi{k}}$is the radix,${\mbi{n}}$is the number of dimensions, and${{N}} = {{k^n}}$is the total number of processors. This result is superior to the best precise diagnostic algorithm, which runs in${{O}}({{N}}{\log _{{k}}}{{N}})$time. Furthermore, the Cartesian product network, a subgraph of the hypermesh and the proposed algorithm can be employed to determine faults in the product network.

2014 Low-Latency Digit-Serial Systolic Double Basis Multiplier over $\mbi GF{(2^m})$ Using Subquadratic Toeplitz Matrix-Vector Product Approach
abstract
Recently in cryptography and security, the multipliers with subquadratic space complexity for trinomials and some specific pentanomials have been proposed. For such kind of multipliers, alternatively, we use double basis multiplication which combines the polynomial basis and the modified polynomial basis to develop a new efficient digit-serial systolic multiplier. The proposed multiplier depends on trinomials and almost equally space pentanomials (AESPs), and utilizes the subquadratic Toeplitz matrix-vector product scheme to derive a low-latency digit-serial systolic architecture. If the selected digit-size is$d$bits, the proposed digit-serial multiplier for both polynomials, i.e., trinomials and AESPs, requires the latency of$2\left\lceil \!{\sqrt {{m \over d}}} \right\rceil\! $, while traditional ones take at least$O\left({\left\lceil {{m \over d}} \right\rceil} \right)$clock cycles. Analytical and application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) synthesis results indicate that both the area and the time$ \times $area complexities of our proposed architecture are significantly lower than the existing digit-serial systolic multipliers.

2014 Reliable Concurrent Error Detection Architectures for Extended Euclidean-Based Division Over GF(2m)
abstract
The extended Euclidean algorithm (EEA) is an important scheme for performing the division operation in finite fields. Many sensitive and security-constrained applications such as those using the elliptic curve cryptography for establishing key agreement schemes, augmented encryption approaches, and digital signature algorithms utilize this operation in their structures. Although much study is performed to realize the EEA in hardware efficiently, research on its reliable implementations needs to be done to achieve fault-immune reliable structures. In this regard, this paper presents a new concurrent error detection (CED) scheme to provide reliability for the aforementioned sensitive and constrained applications. Our proposed CED architecture is a step forward toward more reliable architectures for the EEA algorithm architectures. Through simulations and based on the number of parity bits used, the error detection capability of our CED architecture is derived to be 100% for single-bit errors and close to 99% for the experimented multiple-bit errors. In addition, we present the performance degradations of the proposed approach, leading to low-cost and reliable EEA architectures. The proposed reliable architectures are also suitable for constrained and fault-sensitive embedded applications utilizing the EEA hardware implementations.

2013 Low space-complexity digit-serial dual basis systolic multiplier over Galois field GF(2m) using Hankel matrix and Karatsuba algorithm
abstract
Multiplication is one important finite field arithmetic operation in cryptographic computations. Dual basis multipliers over Galois field GF(2 m ) have been widely applied in this kind of computations because of its advantage of small chip area. Nevertheless, up to date, there are only few methods that can keep balance of low space complexity and low time complexity at the same time. In order to achieve such an efficient aim, this study presents a novel digit‐serial dual basis multiplier that is different from existing ones with a modified cut‐set method using Karatsuba algorithm as well as Hankel matrix. As a result, the proposed multiplier can save much space and thus be particularly suitable for some hand held devices equipped with only limited resources. The proposed digit‐serial dual basis multiplier saves 55% space complexity as compared with existing similar studies with National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) suggested values for elliptic curve cryptosystem.

2012 Low-complexity Gaussian normal basis multiplier over GF(2m)
abstract
The elliptic curve cryptosystem (ECC) is very attractive for the use in portable devices because of the small key size. The finite field multiplication over GF(2m) is the most important arithmetic for performing the ECC. Portable devices usually have restricted computation power and memory resources. This work will present a simple method for designing a Gaussian normal basis (GNB) multiplier over GF(2m) needing only fewer computation power whereas keeping lower cost. The proposed Gaussian NB multiplier saves ∼57% space complexity as compared with existing GNB multiplier.

2012 Palindromic-like representation for Gaussian normal basis multiplier over GF(2m) with odd type t
abstract
Palindromic representation is generally used to reduce space and time complexities in Gaussian normal basis (GNB) multiplier with even type t. However, palindromic representation is inapplicable for a GNB multiplier with odd type t ($t \geq 2$). This study therefore develops a palindromic-like representation for a GNB multiplier with odd type t. The proposed systolic GNB multiplier with odd type t reduces space and time complexities by as much as 50% compared with conventional GNB multiplier with odd type t without palindromic representation.

2012 Fault-tolerant Gaussian normal basis multiplier over GF(2m)
abstract
Fault-tolerant design of a finite field multiplier is an efficient method for resisting fault-based cryptanalysis in Elliptic curve cryptosystems. A novel fault-tolerant bit-parallel Gaussian normal basis (GNB) multiplier with type-t over GF(2m), which can tolerate multiple module failures at one time, is presented. No hardware modification in the proposed GNB multiplier is required to achieve the fault-tolerant function. Hence, the proposed fault-tolerant GNB multiplier has low hardware cost. The reliability of the proposed fault-tolerant GNB multiplier with type-t increases as t increases. However, the behaviour of existing GNB multipliers with concurrent error correction (CEC) resembles triple modular redundancy (TRM) when t>3. In practice, most of suggested m's by NIST use GNB with type-t>3. The proposed fault-tolerant GNB multiplier is an N-modular redundancy (NMR) system with N=t. Thus, the proposed fault-tolerant GNB multiplier with type-t can tolerate at most t/2-1 failed modules simultaneously, while existing GNB multipliers with CEC only can tolerate one failed module. The proposed GNB multiplier requires less extra space and time complexities than similar multipliers. System reliability of the proposed fault-tolerant GNB multiplier is better than that of similar GNB multipliers.

2010 Error-Correcting Codes for Concurrent Error Correction in Bit-Parallel Systolic and Scalable Multipliers for Shifted Dual Basis of GF(2m)

This work presents a novel bit-parallel systolic multiplier for the shifted dual basis of GF(2m). The shifted dual basis multiplication for all trinomials can be represented as the sum of two Hankel matrix-vector multiplications. The proposed multiplier architecture comprises one Hankel multiplier and one (2m-1)-bit adder. The algebraic encoding scheme based on linear cyclic codes is adopted to implement the multiplications with concurrent error correction (CEC). The latency overhead is analytically demonstrated to require extra four clock cycles than as compared by the multiplier without CEC. The block Hankel matrix-vector representation is used to derive a CEC scalable SDB multiplier. In the binary field GF(284), the space overhead of the proposed bit-parallel architecture using cyclic code is around 22.8%. The proposed CEC scalable multiplier given by seven or fewer injection errors can correct nearly 99.6% of error correction. Unlike the existing concurrent error detection multipliers that apply the parity prediction scheme, the proposed architectures have multiple error-detection capabilities.

2010 Concurrent Error Detection in Bit-Serial Normal Basis Multiplication Over GF(2m) Using Multiple Parity Prediction Schemes
abstract
New bit-serial architectures with concurrent error detection capability are presented to detect erroneous outputs in bit-serial normal basis multipliers over GF(2m) using single and multiple-parity prediction schemes. It is shown that different types of normal basis multipliers could be realized by similar architectures. The proposed architectures can detect errors with nearly 100% probability.

2009 An optimized design for serial-parallel finite field multiplication over GF(2m) based on all-one polynomials
abstract
In this paper, we derive a recursive algorithm for finite field multiplication over GF(2m) based on irreducible all-one-polynomials (AOP), where the modular reduction of degree is achieved by cyclic-left-shift without any logic operations. A regular and localized bit-level dependence graph (DG) is derived from the proposed algorithm and mapped into an array architecture, where the modular reduction is achieved by a serial-in parallel-out shift-register. The multiplier is optimized further to perform the accumulation of partial products by the T flip flops of the output register without XOR gates. It is interesting to note that the optimized structure consists of an array of (m+1) AND gates between an array of (m+1) D flip flops and an array of (m+1) T flip flops. The proposed structure therefore involves significantly less area and less computation time compared with the corresponding existing structures.

2009 Scalable Serial-parallel Multiplier over GF(2m) by Hierarchical Pre-reduction and Input Decomposition
abstract
This paper presents a novel serial-parallel architecture for finite field multiplications over GF(2m) defined by irreducible trinomials as field polynomials. By recursive decomposition of one of the operands, and hierarchical pre-reduction of the other, it is possible to feed multiple bits in parallel to the serial-parallel structure. The level of parallelism could be doubled after each level of decomposition of the input operand, when high throughput rate is required. One of the key features of the proposed design is that its clock-period remains invariant with the digit-size. The area-complexity of the proposed design increases linearly with the digit-size, which is unlike some of the existing architectures, where area-complexity increases quadratically with the digit-size. Although the proposed structure involves more area compared with some of the existing architectures, since the clock-period of the proposed design is small, it involves significantly less area-delay complexity than the others.

2009 Unified dual-field multiplier in GF(P) and GF(2k)
abstract
A scalable unified multiplier for both prime fields GF(P) and binary extension fields GF(2k), where P=2m−1 and GF(2k) is generated by an irreducible all one polynomial. The proposed unified dual-field multiplier uses the LSB-first bit-serial architecture for multiplication in GF(P) and GF(2k) other than the Montgomery multiplication algorithm, which has been employed by most existing dual-field multipliers. The proposed unified dual-field multiplier costs little space and time complexities. The new multiplier is scalable for operands of any size while other existing dual-field multipliers are only scalable for operands with multiples of m. Furthermore, the proposed multiplier has simplicity, regularity, modularity and concurrency and is very suitable to be implement in VLSI.

2009 Concurrent Error Detection and Correction in Gaussian Normal Basis Multiplier over GF(2^m)
abstract
Fault-based cryptanalysis has been developed to effectively break both private-key and public-key cryptosystems, making robust finite field multiplication a very important research topic in recent years. However, no robust normal basis multiplier has been proposed in the literature. Therefore, this investigation presents a semisystolic Gaussian normal basis multiplier. Based on the proposed Gaussian normal basis multiplier, both concurrent error detection and correction capabilities can be easily achieved using time redundancy technology with no hardware modification.

2008 Efficient Bit-Parallel Multipliers in Composite Fields
abstract
Hardware implementation of multiplication in finite field GF(2m) based on sparse polynomials is found to be advantageous in terms of space-complexity as well as the time-complexity. In order to design multipliers for the composite fields, we have found another permutation polynomial to convert irreducible polynomials into like-trinomials of the forms (x2+ x + 1)m+ (x2+ x + 1)n+ 1, (x2+ x)m+ (x2+ x)n+ 1 and (x4+ x + 1)m+ (x4+ x + 1)n+ 1. The proposed bit-parallel multiplier over GF(24m) is found to offer a saving of about 33% multiplications and 42.8% additions over the corresponding existing architectures.

2006 Low-Complexity Bit-Parallel Systolic Multipliers over GF(2m)
abstract
Recently, cryptographic applications based on finite fields have attracted much interest. This paper presents two new algorithms, called time-dependent and time-independent multiplication algorithms over a finite field GF(2m) by employing an interleaved conventional multiplication and a folded technique. The proposed algorithms permit efficient realization of the bit-parallel multiplication using iterative arrays. The results show that our proposed time-dependent and time-independent multipliers save about 38% and 54% space complexity as compared to the traditional multipliers, respectively.

2005 Low-Complexity Bit-Parallel Systolic Montgomery Multipliers for Special Classes of GF(2m)
abstract
Recently, cryptographic applications based on finite fields have attracted much interest. This paper presents a transformation method to implement low-complexity Montgomery multipliers for all-one polynomials and trinomials. Using this method, we propose a new bit-parallel systolic architecture for computing multiplications over GF(2/sup m/). These new multipliers have a latency m+1 clock cycles and each cell incorporates at most one 2-input AND gate, two 2-input XOR gates, and four 1-bit latches. Moreover, these new multipliers are shown to exhibit significantly lower latency and circuit complexity than the related systolic multipliers and are highly appropriate for VLSI systems because of their regular interconnection pattern, modular structure, and fully inherent parallelism.

2004 Low-complexity linear array multiplier for normal basis of type-II
abstract
In many cryptographic applications, the finite field is usually defined as the normal basis representation, and accordingly, much research on fast implementation of such a basis are reported. By restricting the characteristics of an optimal normal basis (ONB) of type-II, we used the palindromic representation of type-II ONB to derive a linear array multiplier with a low-complexity architecture. The space complexity of the proposed multiplier can be reduced from O(m/sup 2/) to O(m) as compared with the related normal basis multipliers.

2001 Bit-Parallel Systolic Multipliers for GF(2m) Fields Defined by All-One and Equally Spaced Polynomials
abstract
Two operations, the cyclic shifting and the inner product, are defined by the properties of irreducible all one polynomials. An effective algorithm is proposed for computing multiplications over a class of fields GF(2/sup m/) using the two operations. Then, two low-complexity bit-parallel systolic multipliers are presented based on the algorithm. The first multiplier is composed of (m+1)/sup 2/ identical cells, each consisting of one 2-input AND gate, one 2-input XOR gate, and three 1-bit latches. The other multiplier comprises of (m+1)/sup 2/ identical cells and mXOR gates. Each cell consists of one 2-input AND gate, one 2-input XOR gate, and four 1-bit latches. Each multiplier exhibits very low latency and propagation delay and is thus very fast. Moreover, the architectures of the two multipliers can be applied in computing multiplications over the class of fields GF(2/sup m/) in which the elements are represented with the root of an irreducible equally spaced polynomial of degree m.
