| 1999 | Stand-by Power Minimization Through Simultaneous Threshold Voltage Selection and Circuit SizingabstractWe present a new approach for estimation and optimization of the average stand-by power dissipation in large MOS digital circuits. To overcome the complexity of state dependence in average leakage estimation, we introduce the concept of "dominant leakage states" and use state probabilities. Our method achieves speed-ups of 3 to 4 orders of magnitude over exhaustive SPICE simulations while maintaining accuracies within 9% of SPICE.This accurate estimation is used in a new sensitivity-based leakage and performance optimization approach for circuits using dual V t processes. In tests on a variety of industrial circuits, this approach was able to obtain 81-100% of the performance achievable with all low V t transistors, but with 1/3 to 1/6 the stand-by current. | 1998 | Design and Analysis of Power Distribution Networks in PowerPC MicroprocessorsabstractWe present a methodology for the design and analysis of power grids in the PowerPC™ microprocessors. The methodology covers the need for power grid analysis across all stages of the design process. A case study showing the application of this methodology to the PowerPC™ 750 microprocessor is presented. Abhijit Dharchoudhury, Rajendran Panda, David T. | 1998 | Migration: A New Technique to Improve Synthesized Designs Through Incremental CustomizationabstractA novel technique to explore the performance vs design effort trade-off is proposed. Starting from an optimally synthesized design, performance-critical cells are incrementally and optimally selected and custom-sized to generate this trade-off. Efficient algorithms for the optimal selection, and for improving the reuse of custom-sized cells in the design are given. Significant performance gains are shown in several real circuits through the addition of very few customized cells. Rajendran Panda, Abhijit Dharchoudhury, Tim Edwards, Joe Norton, David T. Blaauw |

| 1998 | CMOS Combinational Circuit Sizing by Stage-wise TaperingabstractWe describe a fast (linear time) procedure to optimally size transistors in a chain of multi-input gates/stages. The fast sizing is used in a simultaneous sizing and restructuring optimization procedure, to accurately predict relative optimal performance of alternative circuit structures for a given total area. The idea extends the concept of optimally sizing a buffer chain and uses tapering constants based on the position of a stage in a circuit, and the position of a transistor in a stack. | 1998 | Emerging power management tools for processor designabstractPower management is an increasing concern for processor design. In this paper, we presented an overview of traditional power simulation tools and discussed two emerging power management design technologies: power distribution integrity analysis and standby current measurement and optimization. We present methods for accurate peak current simulation, which is needed for power grid integrity analysis, and discuss the generation and compression of the simulation vectors. Also, static approaches for calculating an upper-bound on the maximum peak current are presented. Standby leakage current is state dependent and we present methods for calculating both the average and maximum leakage current. Finally, optimization methods for minimizing the leakage current by either assigning a standby state to the circuit or by using a dual-Vt process are discussed. David T. | 1997 | Library-less synthesis for static CMOS combinational logic circuitsabstractTraditional synthesis techniques optimize CMOS circuits in two phases: i) logic minimization and ii) library mapping phase. Typically, the structures and the sizes of the gates in the library are chosen to yield good synthesis results over many blocks or even for an entire chip. Consequently this approach precludes an optimal design of individual blocks which may need custom structures. The authors present a new transistor level technique that optimizes CMOS circuits both structurally and size-wise. The technique is independent of a library and hence can explore a design space much larger than that possible due to gate level optimization. Results demonstrate a significant improvement in circuit performance of the resynthesized circuits. Sergey Gavrilov, Alexey Glebov, Satyamurthy Pullela, S. C. | 1997 | Transistor-level Sizing and Timing Verification of Domino Circuits in the Power PC MicroprocessorabstractThis paper describes a tool called Focus that is currently being used for the timing verification and siting of domino CMOS circuits in a Power PC/sup TM/ microprocessor. Domino CMOS circuits introduce more complex timing and sizing requirements compared to conventional static circuits. This paper shows how these requirements are addressed in Focus. Some case studies involving the application of Focus on production circuits are also described. Abhijit Dharchoudhury, David T. Blaauw, Joe Norton, Satyamurthy Pullela, J. Dunning |

| 1996 | iCET: A Complete Chip-Level Thermal Reliability Diagnosis Tool for CMOS VLSI ChipsabstractIn this paper, we present the first chip-level electrothermal simulator, iCET. For a given chip layout, packaging material, user-specified input signal patterns, and thermal boundary conditions, it automatically finds the CMOS on-chip steady-state temperature profile and the resulting circuit performance. iCET has been tested on several circuits and it can efficiently analyze layouts containing tens of thousands of transistors on a desktop workstation. | 1995 | Worst-case analysis and optimization of VLSI circuit performancesabstractIn this paper, we present a new approach for realistic worst-case analysis of VLSI circuit performances and a novel methodology for circuit performance optimization. Circuit performance measures are modeled as response surfaces of the designable and uncontrollable (noise) parameters. Worst-case analysis proceeds by first computing the worst-case circuit performance value and then determining the worst-case noise parameter values by solving a nonlinear programming problem. A new circuit optimization technique is developed to find an optimal design point at which all of the circuit specifications are met under worst-case conditions. This worst-case design optimization method is formulated as a constrained multicriteria optimization. The methodologies described in this paper are applied to several VLSI circuits to demonstrate their accuracy and efficiency.> Abhijit Dharchoudhury |

| 1993 | Performance-Constrained Worst-Case Variability Minimization of VLSI CircuitsabstractThis paper describes a new technique to design circuits such that the variabtity of the circuit performances due to device parameter fluctuations meets specifications for all values of the environmental parameters (such as operating temperature or voltage supply). The worst-case value of the performance variability is minimized aud specifications on the nominal vrdue of the performance mezumre are handled simultaneously.Response surface models are used to provide efficient and accurate estimates for the performance values and variability during the optimization. This technique haa been successfully applied to significantly increase the parametric yields of a BiCMOS voltage-to-current converter circuit and a CMOS clock driver circuit.I.
