2004 Robust least-squares estimation with a relative entropy constraint
abstract
Given a nominal statistical model, we consider the minimax estimation problem consisting of finding the best least-squares estimator for the least favorable statistical model within a neighborhood of the nominal model. The neighborhood is formed by placing a bound on the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence between the actual and nominal models. For a Gaussian nominal model and a finite observations interval, or for a stationary Gaussian process over an infinite interval, the usual noncausal Wiener filter remains optimal. However, the worst case performance of the filter is affected by the size of the neighborhood representing the model uncertainty. On the other hand, standard causal least-squares estimators are not optimal, and a characterization is provided for the causal estimator and the corresponding least favorable model. The causal estimator takes the form of a risk-sensitive estimator with an appropriately selected risk sensitivity coefficient.

2003 Analysis of spline based auxiliary signal design for failure detection in delay systems
abstract
In an active approach for model detection and its use in failure detection, an auxiliary control is applied in order to assist in model identification. An active approach for robust multi-model identification and failure detection in the presence of disturbances over possibly short time intervals has been introduced. Previous papers extended the original design procedure to problems with several delays and additive noise. The infinite dimensional delay problem was approximated by a finite dimensional system without delays and numerical examples were worked. The numerical examples seemed to converge better than was expected. In this paper we explain that convergence. In addition we discuss the extension of the previous results for delay systems with additive noise to those with small model uncertainties and explain why this additional assumption of small uncertainty, which was not present in the case without delays, is now needed for the analysis.

1992 Modeling and estimation of multiresolution stochastic processes
abstract
An overview is provided of the several components of a research effort aimed at the development of a theory of multiresolution stochastic modeling and associated techniques for optimal multiscale statistical signal and image processing. A natural framework for developing such a theory is the study of stochastic processes indexed by nodes on lattices or trees in which different depths in the tree or lattice correspond to different spatial scales in representing a signal or image. In particular, it is shown how the wavelet transform directly suggests such a modeling paradigm. This perspective then leads directly to the investigation of several classes of dynamic models and related notions of multiscale stationarity in which scale plays the role of a time-like variable. The investigation of models on homogeneous trees is emphasized. The framework examined here allows for consideration, in a very natural way, of the fusion of data from sensors with differing resolutions. Also, thanks to the fact that wavelet transforms do an excellent job of 'compressing' large classes of covariance kernels, it is seen that these modeling paradigms appear to have promise in a far broader context than one might expect.>
