2015 Mechanistic Modeling of Architectural Vulnerability Factor
abstract
Reliability to soft errors is a significant design challenge in modern microprocessors owing to an exponential increase in the number of transistors on chip and the reduction in operating voltages with each process generation. Architectural Vulnerability Factor (AVF) modeling using microarchitectural simulators enables architects to make informed performance, power, and reliability tradeoffs. However, such simulators are time-consuming and do not reveal the microarchitectural mechanisms that influence AVF. In this article, we present an accurate first-order mechanistic analytical model to compute AVF, developed using the first principles of an out-of-order superscalar execution. This model provides insight into the fundamental interactions between the workload and microarchitecture that together influence AVF. We use the model to perform design space exploration, parametric sweeps, and workload characterization for AVF.

2014 Predictive Heterogeneity-Aware Application Scheduling for Chip Multiprocessors
abstract
Single-ISA heterogeneous chip multiprocessor (CMP) is not only an attractive design paradigm but also is expected to occur as a consequence of manufacturing imperfections, such as process variation and permanent faults. Process variation could cause cores to have different maximum frequencies; whereas permanent faults could cause losses of functional units and/or cache banks randomly distributed on cores, resulting in fine-grained heterogeneous CMPs. Hence, application schedulers for CMPs need to be aware of such heterogeneity to avoid pathological scheduling decisions. However, existing heterogeneity-aware scheduling schemes rely on either trial runs or offline profiled information to schedule the applications, which incur significant performance degradation and are impractical to implement. This paper presents a dynamic and predictive application scheduler for single-ISA heterogeneous CMPs. It uses a set of hardware-efficient online profilers and an analytical performance model to simultaneously predict the applications performance on different cores. Based on the predicted performance, the scheduler identifies and enforces near-optimal application assignment for each scheduling interval without any trial runs or offline profiling. We demonstrate that, using only a few kilo-bytes of extra hardware, the proposed heterogeneity-aware scheduler improves the system throughput by an average of 20.8 percent and the weighted speedup by 11.3 percent compared with the commodity OpenSolaris scheduler. Compared with the best known research scheduler, the proposed scheduler also improves the throughput by 11.4 percent and the weighted speedup by 6.8 percent.

2011 Predictive coordination of multiple on-chip resources for chip multiprocessors
abstract
Efficient on-chip resource management is crucial for Chip Multiprocessors (CMP) to achieve high resource utilization and enforce system-level performance objectives. Existing multiple resource management schemes either focus on intra-core resources or inter-core resources, missing the opportunity for exploiting the interaction between these two level resources. Moreover, these resource management schemes either rely on trial runs or complex on-line machine learning model to search for the appropriate resource allocation, which makes resource management inefficient and expensive. To address these limitations, this paper presents a predictive yet cost effective mechanism for multiple resource management in CMP. It uses a set of hardware-efficient online profilers and an analytical performance model to predict the application's performance with different intra-core and/or inter-core resource allocations. Based on the predicted performance, the resource allocator identifies and enforces near optimum resource partitions for each epoch without any trial runs. The experimental results show that the proposed predictive resource management framework could improve the weighted speedup of the CMP system by an average of 11.6% compared with the equal partition scheme, and 9.3% compared with existing reactive resource management scheme.

2011 Autocorrelation analysis: a new and improved method for measuring branch predictability
abstract
Branch taken rate and transition rate have been proposed as metrics to characterize the branch predictability. However, these two metrics may misclassify branches with regular history patterns as hard-to-predict branches, causing an inaccurate and ambiguous view of branch predictability. This study uses autocorrelation to analyze the branch history patterns and presents a new metric Degree of Pattern Irregularity (DPI) for branch classification. The proposed metric is evaluated with different branch predictors, and the results show that DPI significantly improves the quality and the accuracy of branch classification over traditional taken rate and transition rate.

2011 Modeling program resource demand using inherent program characteristics
abstract
The workloads in modern Chip-multiprocessors (CMP) are becoming increasingly diversified, creating different resource demands on hardware substrate. It is necessary to allocate hardware resources based on the needs of the workloads in order to improve system efficiency and/or ensure Quality-of-Service (QoS) at certain performance levels. Therefore, it is extremely important to identify the resource demand of the workload in terms of the performance and power efficiency. Existing models are inappropriate for estimating resource demands as they require either partial simulations or time-consuming training. This paper presents an integrated framework that is able to identify the single-resource or multi-resource demands on an array of hardware resources ranging from the issue width of the processor to the memory bandwidth. With an analytical model based on program inherent characteristics, this framework does not require any detailed simulation or training yet is still able to capture the performance trend of the program accurately. Our experiment shows that the proposed framework on average provides no larger than 8.6 % error to any given performance target for multi-resource demand estimation. By using the proposed performance model, the framework identifies the multi-resource demands up to 40X faster compared to the state-of-the-art analytical model. The proposed framework can be applied in workload capacity planning, hardware resource adaptation as well as coordinated resource management for QoS in CMP systems.

2010 A bandwidth-aware memory-subsystem resource management using non-invasive resource profilers for large CMP systems
abstract
By integrating multiple cores in a single chip, Chip Multiprocessors (CMP) provide an attractive approach to improve both system throughput and efficiency. This integration allows the sharing of on-chip resources which may lead to destructive interference between the executing workloads. Memorysubsystem is an important shared resource that contributes significantly to the overall throughput and power consumption. In order to prevent destructive interference, the cache capacity and memory bandwidth requirements of the last level cache have to be controlled. While previously proposed schemes focus on resource sharing within a chip, we explore additional possibilities both inside and outside a single chip. We propose a dynamic memory-subsystem resource management scheme that considers both cache capacity and memory bandwidth contention in large multi-chip CMP systems. Our approach uses low overhead, non-invasive resource profilers that are based on Mattson's stack distance algorithm to project each core's resource requirements and guide our cache partitioning algorithms. Our bandwidth-aware algorithm seeks for throughput optimizations among multiple chips by migrating workloads from the most resource-overcommitted chips to the ones with more available resources. Use of bandwidth as a criterion results in an overall 18% reduction in memory bandwidth along with a 7.9% reduction in miss rate, compared to existing resource management schemes. Using a cycle-accurate full system simulator, our approach achieved an average improvement of 8.5% on throughput.

2010 CantorSim: Simplifying Acceleration of Micro-architecture Simulations
abstract
Many techniques have been developed to accelerate micro-architecture simulation since it is becoming increasingly urgent as the complexity of workloads and simulated processors increases. However, most of popular techniques need profiles or trial simulations to determine parameters before real simulations. When the number of dynamic instructions of workloads such as SPEC CPU2006 is huge, the profiles or trial simulations often take a long time. What's worse, any changes of benchmarks need to repeat the above work. This paper proposes a novel approach based on fractals to solve this problem. It employs the generation procedure of trisection Cantor Set, a classic fractal, to select instructions simulated in detail. We implement a simulator named CantorSim using the trisection Cantor fractal approach. The simulator is evaluated with benchmark programs from SPEC CPU2000 and SPEC CPU2006. We show that our approach is micro-architecture independent as the same parameter value for a single program yields similar results on processors with different configurations. The unified analytical model used to determine sampling parameters for different benchmarks indicates the proposed approach can save a lot of time for preparing parameters. On the other hand, for SPEC CPU2000 and SPEC CPU2006, CantorSim is slightly faster than SMARTSim. The validated average CPI relative errors of the SPEC CPU2000 and SPEC CPU2006 are 3.2% and 2.2% respectively. Therefore, our proposed approach can simplify acceleration of simulations significantly without sacrificing speed and accuracy.

2009 Efficient program scheduling for heterogeneous multi-core processors
abstract
Heterogeneous multicore processors promise high execution efficiency under diverse workloads, and program scheduling is critical in exploiting this efficiency. This paper presents a novel method to leverage the inherent characteristics of a program for scheduling decisions in heterogeneous multicore processors. The proposed method projects the core's configuration and the program's resource demand to a unified multi-dimensional space, and uses weighted Euclidean distance between these two to guide the program scheduling. The experimental results show that on average, this distance based scheduling heuristic achieves 24.5% reduction in energy delay product, 6.1% reduction in energy, and 9.1% improvement in throughput when compared with traditional hardware oblivious scheduling algorithm.

2009 TSS: Applying two-stage sampling in micro-architecture simulations
abstract
Accelerating micro-architecture simulation is becoming increasingly urgent as the complexity of workload and simulated processor increases. This paper presents a novel two-stage sampling (TSS) scheme to accelerate the sampling-based simulation. It firstly selects some large samples from a dynamic instruction stream as candidates of detail simulation and then samples some small groups from each selected first stage sample to do detail simulation. Since the distribution of standard deviation of cycle per instruction (CPI) is insensitive to microarchitecture, TSS could be used to speedup design space exploration by splitting the sampling process into two stages, which is able to remove redundant instruction samples from detail simulation when the program is in stable program phase (standard deviation of CPI is near zero). It also adopts systematic sampling to accelerate the functional warm-up in sampling simulation. Experimental results show that, by combining these two techniques, TSS achieves an average and maximum speedup of 1.3 and 2.29 over SMARTS, with the average CPI relative error is less than 3%. TSS could significantly accelerate the time consuming iterative early design evaluation process.

2004 Real-Time Strategy and Practice in Service Grid
abstract
The emerging service grids bring together various distributed application-level services to a 'market' for clients to request and enable the integration of services across distributed, heterogeneous, dynamic virtual organizations. However, there are a number of applications with the requirement of time constraints. We propose a real-time strategy in service grid architecture. We also extend the OGSI grid service semantics for fault-tolerance. The real-time and fault-tolerant strategies seem efficient through experiments.
