2008 Long-Term Cross-Session Relevance Feedback Using Virtual Features
abstract
Relevance feedback (RF) is an iterative process, which refines the retrievals by utilizing the user's feedback on previously retrieved results. Traditional RF techniques solely use the short-term learning experience and do not exploit the knowledge created during cross sessions with multiple users. In this paper, we propose a novel RF framework, which facilitates the combination of short-term and long-term learning processes by integrating the traditional methods with a new technique called the virtual feature. The feedback history with all the users is digested by the system and is represented in a very efficient form as a virtual feature of the images. As such, the dissimilarity measure can dynamically be adapted, depending on the estimate of the semantic relevance derived from the virtual features. In addition, with a dynamic database, the user's subject concepts may transit from one to another. By monitoring the changes in retrieval performance, the proposed system can automatically adapt the concepts according to the new subject concepts. The experiments are conducted on a real image database. The results manifest that the proposed framework outperforms the traditional within-session and log-based long-term RF techniques.

2007 Scatter PSO - A more effective form of Particle Swarm Optimization
abstract
A fertile complementarity exists between scatter search (SS) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Shared and contrasting principles underlying these methods provide a fertile basis for combining them to create a hybrid method. We identify a specific hybrid, Scatter PSO, giving rise to two variants that prove more effective than the constriction factor model of PSO. Applied to finding global minima for continuous nonlinear functions, Scatter PSO not only is able to obtain better solutions to a widely used set of benchmark functions, but also proves more robust under a variety of experimental conditions.

2005 A Novel Approach for Composing Test Sheets from Large Item Banks to Meet Multiple Assessment Criteria
abstract
To accurately analyze the problems of students in learning, the composed test sheets must meet multiple assessment criteria, such as the ratio of relevant concepts to be evaluated, the average discrimination degree, difficulty degree and estimated testing time. In this paper, a heuristic approach is proposed to improve the efficiency of composing near optimal test sheets from very large item banks to meet multiple assessment criteria. From the experimental results, we conclude that our novel approach is desirable in composing near optimal test sheets from large item bank and hence can support the need of diagnosing student learning problems.

2005 Integrating Relevance Feedback Techniques for Image Retrieval Using Reinforcement Learning
abstract
Relevance feedback (RF) is an interactive process which refines the retrievals to a particular query by utilizing the user's feedback on previously retrieved results. Most researchers strive to develop new RF techniques and ignore the advantages of existing ones. In this paper, we propose an image relevance reinforcement learning (IRRL) model for integrating existing RF techniques in a content-based image retrieval system. Various integration schemes are presented and a long-term shared memory is used to exploit the retrieval experience from multiple users. Also, a concept digesting method is proposed to reduce the complexity of storage demand. The experimental results manifest that the integration of multiple RF approaches gives better retrieval performance than using one RF technique alone, and that the sharing of relevance knowledge between multiple query sessions significantly improves the performance. Further, the storage demand is significantly reduced by the concept digesting technique. This shows the scalability of the proposed model with the increasing-size of database.

2003 Ant-Tree: an ant colony optimization approach to the generalized minimum spanning tree problem
abstract
The ant colony optimization is a meta-heuristic inspired by knowledge sharing amongst ants using pheromone, which serves as a kind of collective memory. Since the past few years, there have been several successful applications of this new approach for finding approximate solutions for computationally difficult problems in reasonable times. In this paper, we study the generalized minimum spanning tree problem that involves the design of a minimum weight connected network spanning at least one node out of every disjoint subset of the nodes in a graph. This problem has a wealth of pertinence to a wide range of applications in different areas. As the problem is known as computationally challenging, we adopt the ant colony optimization strategy and present a new solution method, called Ant-Tree, to develop approximate solutions. As an initial attempt, our study aims to provide an investigation of the ant colony optimization approach for coping with tree optimization problems. Through computational experiments, we compare the performances of our approach and the method available in the literature. Numerical results indicate that the proposed method is effective in producing quality approximate solutions.

2000 A Tabu Search Approach to Polygonal Approximation of Digital Curves
abstract
Most of the previous polygonal approximation methods are sub-optimal and their compression ratio with respect to a given error tolerance is not good enough for some applications. Recently, a genetic-based approach which can provide near-optimal solutions is presented, but the demands on computation and memory are too high. In this paper, a new polygonal approximation method using the tabu search technique is presented. The proposed method produces a higher compression ratio than the suboptimal approach and the genetic-based approach, and the computation cost and the memory store are more efficient.

1999 Genetic Algorithms for Polygonal Approximation of Digital Curves
abstract
In this paper, three polygonal approximation approaches using genetic algorithms are proposed. The first approach approximates the digital curve by minimizing the number of sides of the polygon and the approximation error should be less than a prespecified tolerance value. The second approach minimizes the approximation error by searching for a polygon with a given number of sides. The third approach, which is more practical, determines the approximating polygon automatically without any given condition. Moreover, a learning strategy for each of the proposed genetic algorithm is presented to improve the results. The experimental results show that the proposed approaches have better performances than those of existing methods.
