| 1997 | Design of a Gigabit ATM SwitchabstractThis paper describes the design and implementation of a gigabit ATM switching system supporting link rates from 150 Mb/s to 2.4 Gb/s, with a uniquely efficient multicast switch architecture that enables the construction of systems with essentially constant per port costs for configurations ranging from 8 to 4096 ports and system capacities approaching 10 Tb/s. The system design supports many-to-one and many-to-many forms of multicast, in addition to the usual one-to-many. It also provides multicast virtual paths, constant time configuration of multicast connections and an efficient packet-level discard method, that can achieve 100% link efficiencies, without large buffers. | 1988 | Q-Modules: Internally Clocked Delay-Insensitive ModulesabstractQ-modules are internally clocked modules that can be used to satisfy delay-insensitive specifications. A single delay element is required with a one-sided bound that its value be greater than the maximum delay of the combination logic. Prototypes of components to implement Q-modules have been designed, and a design aid program, QSYN, to place instances of these components, personalize a PLA, and generate a MAGIC or CIF file for a CMOS realization, including the delay circuitry, is being developed. Testability is one of the advantages of Q-modules over clock-free delay-insensitive modules; circuitry is included in the cells for testing the logic and interconnections.> Fred U. | 1983 | Measured Flip-Flop Responses to Marginal TriggeringabstractTest data are presented characterizing the marginal triggering response of several types of flip-flops. This characterization, which is seldom measured or specified, is required to predict the reliability of synchronizer designs. Thomas J. Chaney |

| 1979 | Comments on "A Note on Synchronizer or Interlock Maloperation"abstractE. G. Wormald's note1proposes a way to prevent metastable action in synchronizers. Experimental results from testing his suggested circuits show that his solution does not work. A reference to a general proof that synchronizers must have a region of metastable action is given. | 1973 | Anomalous Behavior of Synchronizer and Arbiter CircuitsabstractObservations are shown of oscillatory and metastable behavior of flip-flops in response to logically undefined input conditions such as those that occur in synchronizers and arbiters. Significant systems failures have resulted from this fundamentally inescapable problem that is generally not appreciated by system designers and users. Thomas J. Chaney, Charles E. Molnar |
