| 2025 | Unsupervised Kernel-based Multi-view Feature Selection with Robust Self-representation and Binary HashingabstractUnsupervised multi-view feature selection involves selecting a subset of crucial features across diverse views to diminish feature dimensionality without leveraging label information. While numerous studies have delved into this area, current solutions predominantly rely on linear multi-view data or employ weakly supervised learning to aid in feature selection. These approaches may risk losing semantic information when applied to real-world multi-view datasets. In this study, we introduce a novel model, Unsupervised Kernel-based Multi-view Feature selection with Robust self-representation and Binary hashing (UKMFS), which aims to identify robust consistent graph representation across views and leverage binary hashing codes to guide feature selection. Specifically, we first explore the underlying geometry by unifying the dimension of multi-view data with non-linear kernel mapping. Then, we search the consistent graph across views by fusing unique graph representations of each view in a self-representation manner. Additionally, we impose low-rank constraints on the graph of each view to mitigate noise and unimportant parts for preserving the main structures and patterns. Furthermore, we design an unsupervised hashing feature selection model to exploit reliable binary labels across views and weighted matrices from each view. Finally, an effective optimization method is customised to solve the formulated problem iteratively. Comprehensive experiments on public multi-view datasets indicate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance compared with the representative comparison methods regarding the clustering and the feature selection task. | 2023 | The Improved Winter Wheat Yield Estimation by Assimilating GLASS LAI Into a Crop Growth Model With the Proposed Bayesian Posterior-Based Ensemble Kalman FilterabstractData assimilation has been demonstrated as the potential crop yield estimation approach. Accurate quantification of model and observation errors is the key to determining the success of a data assimilation system. However, the crop growth model error is not fully taken into account in most of the previous studies. The objective of this study is to better quantify the model uncertainty in the data assimilation system. Firstly, we calibrated a crop growth model and inferred its posterior uncertainty based on the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) 250-m LAI product, regional statistical data, station observations, and field measurements with a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. Secondly, the model posterior uncertainty was used in the Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) algorithm to better characterize the ensemble distribution of model errors. Our results indicated the proposed Bayesian posterior-based EnKF can improve the accuracy of winter wheat yield estimation at both the point scale (the coefficient of determination R2value increasing from 0.06 to 0.41, the mean absolute percentage error MAPE value decreasing from 12.65% to 7.82%, and the root mean square error RMSE value decreasing from 987 to 688 kg∙ha-1) and the regional scale (R2value from 0.30 to 0.57, MAPE value from 19.67% to 10.13%, and RMSE value from 1275 to 695 kg∙ha-1) compared with the open-loop estimation. Our analysis also indicated that the Bayesian posterior-based EnKF can perform better compared to the standard Gaussian perturbation-based EnKF. The proposed framework provides an important reference for crop yield estimation at the regional scale in similar agricultural landscapes worldwide. | 2022 | Retrieval of the Soil Salinity From Sentinel-1 Dual-Polarized SAR Data Based on Deep Neural Network RegressionabstractSoil salinity is a significant environmental indicator, directly reflecting the land quality and its productivity. In this work, dual-polarized synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data were exploited to retrieve the soil salinity in saline-affected fields based on the deep neural network (DNN) theory. Two polarimetric features gotten from Cloude polarization decomposition, together with six other features, were calculated and selected from ten features according to the feature importance. The DNN regression model for soil salinity (DNNR-S) based on one-dimensional convolutional neural network, quantifying the relationship between the eight feature parameters and soil salinity, was established to retrieve the soil salinity in northeastern China. Compared with other five traditional machine learning regression methods [logistic regression (LOR), random forest regression (RFR), support vector regression (SVR), decision tree regression (DTR), and multilayer perceptron regression (MPR)], DNNR-S is the best-performing model with the performance of root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.28, mean absolute error (MAE) = 0.21, and$r = 0.74$. Using the proposed model, the soil salinity was retrieved, and 52.37% was found to be affected by salinization which was in general agreement with the government report. Due to the training criteria in the proposed model, it was a little more computationally intensive than all the others, but the DNNR-S had the advantage of easy spread to other study areas. | 2022 | A Novel Approach to Estimate Maize Lodging Area With PolSAR DataabstractAssessing crop lodging at the regional scale is an important requirement for breeding lodging-resistant varieties and harvest planning. Accurately and continuously estimating crop lodging area from remote sensing data remains challenging due to the high randomness scattering signal of SAR images and the insufficient number of applicable optical images. This study developed a new framework for estimating crop lodging area based on SAR data using the spatial aggregation approach of field units, overcoming the deficit of the traditional pixel-based approach susceptible to speckle noise and spatial heterogeneity. We aggregated the field’s pixel in SAR images using the spatial aggregation approach. The lodging area estimation models of dual-pol and quad-pol were established using a random forest (RF) algorithm. The Sobol approach evaluated the uncertainty and sensitivity at a regional scale. Finally, we analyzed the scattering mechanisms of the lodging field. Results indicate that the proposed method achieves the high performance of the lodging area estimates at the regional scale, in the testing set, with R2and RMSE of the GF-3 model being 0.57 and 18.63%, and the Sentinel-1 model is 0.49 and 20.59%. Besides, the uncertainties of models are below 10%, and are insensitive to the variation of parameters inter-correlation. The depolarization effect and scattering randomness gradually weaken with the increase of lodging percentages. In contrast, the surface scattering quickly increases and finally dominates the total scattering after lodging percentages greater than 80%. This proposed approach would help develop a real-time crop lodging monitoring system using SAR data. Haixiang Guan, Jianxi Huang, Li Li 0059, Xuecao Li, YuYang Ma, Quandi Niu, Hai Huang 0015 |

| 2021 | Fusion of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Imagery for Land Salinity Mapping: A Case Study in Da'an, Jilin ProvinceabstractThe degradation of salinized land in western Jilin Province and its negative impact on the local and global environment have led to increasing interest in salinization restoration. Satellite remote sensing technology may provide up-to-date information on large-scale land salinization, and provide support for land protection and monitoring planning. In this case, the fusion of optical and radar remote sensing data may be precious because most of the land salinization degradation is located in areas with high cloud cover, which limiting the use of optical data. Radar data can “see-through” clouds, but the experience so far shows that it can't distinguish some types of land cover very well. At present, there are many optical and radar data fusion methods, but there is rare information about how to mapping land salinity using data fusion. To evaluate data fusion's potential, we applied classification method to sentinel-1 and sentinel-2 images for mapping the land salinity cover in Da'an City, Western Jilin Province. Based on our research results, we provide a beneficial method to help people involved in salinized land restoration to utilize the potential of big data. | 2020 | Sentinel-1 Imagery Incorporating Machine Learning for Dryland Salinity Monitoring: A Case Study in Esperance, Western AustraliaabstractDue to the lack of a suitable theoretical model for simulating radar backscatter of soil based on salt content, we investigated a new method to exploit Sentinel-1 radar backscatters and polarimetric decomposition information for dryland soil salinity monitoring. Soil electrical conductivity (EC) was estimated using Sentinel-1 SAR imagery and field survey data combined with five machine learning models in Esperance, located in the southwest of Western Australia (SWWA). The performance of the five machine learning models was assessed and compared using the root-mean-square error (RMSE), the mean absolute error (MAE), and the correlation coefficient ( r). The results revealed that the Random Forest Regression model (RFR) yielded the highest prediction performance ( RMSE=2.89 S/m, MAE=1.90 S/m, and r=0.81) and outperformed the other models. It can be concluded that the intensity images of VV and VH polarization of SAR imagery have the potential to predict EC of soils in SWWA.
