2023 Cryptensor: A Resource-Shared Co-Processor to Accelerate Convolutional Neural Network and Polynomial Convolution
abstract
Practical deployment of convolutional neural network (CNN) and cryptography algorithm on constrained devices are challenging due to the huge computation and memory requirement. Developing separate hardware accelerator for AI and cryptography incur large area consumption, which is not desirable in many applications. This article proposes a viable solution to this issue by expressing the CNN and cryptography as generic-matrix-multiplication (GEMM) operations and map them to the same accelerator for reduced hardware consumption. A novel systolic tensor array (STA) design was proposed to reduce the data movement, effectively reducing the operand registers by$2\times $. Two novel techniques, input layer extension and polynomial factorization, are proposed to mitigate the under-utilization issue found in existing STA architecture. Additionally, the tensor processing element (TPE) is fused using DSP unit to reduce the look-up table (LUT) and flip-flops (FFs) consumption for implementing multipliers. On top of that, a novel memory efficient factorization technique is proposed to allow computation of polynomial convolution on the same STA. Experimental results show that Cryptensor achieved 21.6% better throughput for VGG-16 implementation on XC7Z020 FPGA; up to$8.40\times $better-energy efficiency compared to existing ResNet-18 implementation on XC7Z045 FPGA. Cryptensor can also flexibly support multiple security levels in NTRU scheme, with no additional hardware. The proposed hardware unifies the computation of two different domains that are critical for IoT applications, which greatly reduces the hardware consumption on edge nodes.

2016 Supporting Business Intelligence Usage: An Integrated Framework with Automatic Weighting
abstract
This paper presents an integrated framework that comprises an automatic weighting method for assessing data quality (DQ) of the framework so as to better support the business intelligence (BI) usage. Specifically, we utilize business process modeling (BPM) notation and information product map and frame them into a hierarchical mapping structure. Furthermore, we develop and demonstrate an automatic weight-assignment method for evaluating critical dimensions (i.e., completeness and accuracy) of DQ of the integrated framework. Through a design science paradigm, the effectiveness of the framework and the associated DQ weighting method has been rigorously validated by faculty management users of a university. The framework together with the DQ weighting method builds user confidence by enhancing the traceability of a BI product. The automatic DQ weight assignment also provides better time efficiency because the weight of each data attribute is determined automatically based on its usage on the BI dashboard.

2012 Video hyperlinking: libraries and tools for threading and visualizing large video collection
abstract
While HTML documents could be effortlessly hyperlinked by markup tags, creation of the hyperlinks for multimedia objects is by no means easy due to the involvement of various visual processing units and intensive computational overhead. This paper introduces an open source, named VIREO-VH, which provides end-to-end support for creating hyperlinks to thread and visualize collections of videos. The software components include video pre-processing, bag-of-words based inverted file indexing for scalable near-duplicate keyframe search, localization of partial near-duplicate segments, and galaxy visualization of video collection. The open source has been internally used by VIREO research team since 2007, and was evolved over years based on experiences through developing various multimedia applications.

2011 Fusing heterogeneous modalities for video and image re-ranking
abstract
Multimedia documents in popular image and video sharing websites such as Flickr and Youtube are heterogeneous documents with diverse ways of representations and rich user-supplied information. In this paper, we investigate how the agreement among heterogeneous modalities can be exploited to guide data fusion. The problem of fusion is cast as the simultaneous mining of agreement from different modalities and adaptation of fusion weights to construct a fused graph from these modalities. An iterative framework based on agreement-fusion optimization is thus proposed. We plug in two well-known algorithms: random walk and semi-supervised learning to this framework to illustrate the idea of how agreement (conflict) is incorporated (compromised) in the case of uniform and adaptive fusion. Experimental results on web video and image re-ranking demonstrate that, by proper fusion strategy rather than simple linear fusion, performance improvement on search can generally be expected.

2011 Galaxy browser: exploratory search of web videos
abstract
Most search engines return a ranked list of items in response to a query. The list however tells very little about the relationship among items. For videos especially, users often read to spend significant amount of time to navigate the search result. Exploratory search presents a new paradigm for browsing where the browser takes up the role of information exploring and presents a well-organized browsing structure for users to navigate. The proposed interface Galaxy Browser adopts the recent advances in near-duplicate detection and then synchronizes the detected near-duplicate information with comprehensive background knowledge derived from online external resources. The result is a topic structure on which users can easily browse and explore.

2011 Cross media hyperlinking for search topic browsing
abstract
With the rapid growth of social media, there are plenty of information sources freely available online for use. Nevertheless, how to synchronize and leverage these diverse forms of information for multimedia applications remains a problem yet to be seriously studied. This paper investigates the synchronization of multiple media content in the physical form of hyperlinking them. The ultimate goal is to develop browsing systems that author search results with rich media information mined from various knowledge sources. The authoring enables the vivid visualization and exploration of different information landscapes inherent in search results. Several key techniques are studied in this paper for developing these browsing features. These techniques include content mining and selection from web videos, space-time alignment of multiple media, and augmenting of search result with when and what information. We conduct both quantitative and user studies on a large video dataset for performance evaluation. Comparison with traditional techniques including storyboard summarization and video skimming are also presented.

2011 Beyond search: Event-driven summarization for web videos
abstract
The explosive growth of Web videos brings out the challenge of how to efficiently browse hundreds or even thousands of videos at a glance. Given an event-driven query, social media Web sites usually return a large number of videos that are diverse and noisy in a ranking list. Exploring such results will be time-consuming and thus degrades user experience. This article presents a novel scheme that is able to summarize the content of video search results by mining and threading “key” shots, such that users can get an overview of main content of these videos at a glance. The proposed framework mainly comprises four stages. First, given an event query, a set of Web videos is collected associated with their ranking order and tags. Second, key-shots are established and ranked based on near-duplicate keyframe detection and they are threaded in a chronological order. Third, we analyze the tags associated with key-shots. Irrelevant tags are filtered out via a representativeness and descriptiveness analysis, whereas the remaining tags are propagated among key-shots by random walk. Finally, summarization is formulated as an optimization framework that compromises relevance of key-shots and user-defined skimming ratio. We provide two types of summarization: video skimming and visual-textual storyboard. We conduct user studies on twenty event queries for over hundred hours of videos crawled from YouTube. The evaluation demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solution.

2010 Topical summarization of web videos by visual-text time-dependent alignment
abstract
Search engines are used to return a long list of hundreds or even thousands of videos in response to a query topic. Efficient navigation of videos becomes difficult and users often need to painstakingly explore the search list for a gist of the search result. This paper addresses the challenge of topical summarization by providing a timeline-based visualization of videos through matching of heterogeneous sources. To overcome the so called sparse-text problem of web videos, auxiliary information from Google context is exploited. Google Trends is used to predict the milestone events of a topic. Meanwhile, the typical scenes of web videos are extracted by visual near-duplicate threading. Visual-text alignment is then conducted to align scenes from videos and articles from Google News. The outcome is a set of scene-news pairs, each representing an event mapped to the milestone timeline of a topic. The timeline-based visualization provides a glimpse of major events about a topic. We conduct both the quantitative and subjective studies to evaluate the practicality of the application.

2010 Efficient Mining of Multiple Partial Near-Duplicate Alignments by Temporal Network
abstract
This paper considers the mining and localization of near-duplicate segments at arbitrary positions of partial near-duplicate videos in a corpus. Temporal network is proposed to model the visual-temporal consistency between video sequence by embedding temporal constraints as directed edges in the network. Partial alignment is then achieved through network flow programming. To handle multiple alignments, we consider two properties of network structure: conciseness and divisibility, to ensure that the mining is efficient and effective. Frame-level matching is further integrated in the temporal network for alignment verification. This results in an iterative alignment-verification procedure to fine tune the localization of near-duplicate segments. The scalability of frame-level matching is enhanced by exploring visual keyword matching algorithms. We demonstrate the proposed work for mining partial alignments from two months of broadcast videos and across six TV sources.

2009 Scalable detection of partial near-duplicate videos by visual-temporal consistency
abstract
Following the exponential growth of social media, there now exist huge repositories of videos online. Among the huge volumes of videos, there exist large numbers of near-duplicate videos. Most existing techniques either focus on the fast retrieval of full copies or near-duplicates, or consider localization in a heuristic manner. This paper considers the scalable detection and localization of partial near-duplicate videos by jointly considering visual similarity and temporal consistency. Temporal constraints are embedded into a network structure as directed edges. Through the structure, partial alignment is novelly converted into a network flow problem where highly efficient solutions exist. To precisely decide the boundaries of the overlapping segments, pair-wise constraints generated from keypoint matching can be added to the network to iteratively refine the localization result. We demonstrate the effectiveness of partial alignment for three different tasks. The first task links partial segments in full-length movies to videos crawled from YouTube. The second task performs fast web video search, while the third performs near-duplicate shot and copy detection. The experimental result demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

2009 Real-Time Near-Duplicate Elimination for Web Video Search With Content and Context
abstract
With the exponential growth of social media, there exist huge numbers of near-duplicate web videos, ranging from simple formatting to complex mixture of different editing effects. In addition to the abundant video content, the social web provides rich sets of context information associated with web videos, such as thumbnail image, time duration and so on. At the same time, the popularity of Web 2.0 demands for timely response to user queries. To balance the speed and accuracy aspects, in this paper, we combine the contextual information from time duration, number of views, and thumbnail images with the content analysis derived from color and local points to achieve real-time near-duplicate elimination. The results of 24 popular queries retrieved from YouTube show that the proposed approach integrating content and context can reach real-time novelty re-ranking of web videos with extremely high efficiency, where the majority of duplicates can be rapidly detected and removed from the top rankings. The speedup of the proposed approach can reach 164 times faster than the effective hierarchical method proposed in, with just a slight loss of performance.

2008 Modeling video hyperlinks with hypergraph for web video reranking
abstract
In this paper, we investigate a novel approach of exploiting visual-duplicates for web video reranking using hypergraph. Current graph-based reranking approaches consider mainly the pair-wise linking of keyframes and ignore reliability issues that are inherent in such representation. We exploit higher order relation to overcome the issues of missing links in visual-duplicate keyframes and in addition identify the latent relationships among keyframes. Based on hypergraph, we consider two groups of video threads: visual near-duplicate threads and story threads, to hyperlink web videos and describe the higher order information existing in video content. To facilitate reranking using random walk algorithm, the hypergraph is converted to a star-like graph using star expansion algorithm. Experiments on a dataset of 12,790 web videos show that hypergraph reranking can improve web video retrieval up to 45% over the initial ranked result by the video sharing websites and 8.3% over the pair-wise based graph reranking in mean average precision (MAP).

2008 Accelerating near-duplicate video matching by combining visual similarity and alignment distortion
abstract
In this paper, we investigate a novel approach to accelerate the matching of two video clips by exploiting the temporal coherence property inherent in the keyframe sequence of a video. Motivated by the fact that keyframe correspondences between near-duplicate videos typically follow certain spatial arrangements, such property could be employed to guide the alignment of two keyframe sequences. We set the alignment problem as an integer quadratic programming problem, where the cost function takes into account both the visual similarity of the corresponding keyframes as well as the alignment distortion among the set of correspondences. The set of keyframe-pairs found by our algorithm provides our proposal on the list of candidate keyframe-pairs for near-duplicate detection using local interest points. This eliminates the need for exhaustive keyframe-pair comparisons, which significantly accelerates the matching speed. Experiments on a dataset of 12,790 web videos demonstrate that the proposed method maintains a similar near-duplicate video retrieval performance as the hierarchical method proposed in [12] but with a significantly reduced number of keyframe-pair comparisons.

2007 Near-Duplicate Keyframe Identification With Interest Point Matching and Pattern Learning
abstract
This paper proposes a new approach for near-duplicate keyframe (NDK) identification by matching, filtering and learning of local interest points (LIPs) with PCA-SIFT descriptors. The issues in matching reliability, filtering efficiency and learning flexibility are novelly exploited to delve into the potential of LIP-based retrieval and detection. In matching, we propose a one-to-one symmetric matching (OOS) algorithm which is found to be highly reliable for NDK identification, due to its capability in excluding false LIP matches compared with other matching strategies. For rapid filtering, we address two issues: speed efficiency and search effectiveness, to support OOS with a new index structure called LIP-IS. By exploring the properties of PCA-SIFT, the filtering capability and speed of LIP-IS are asymptotically estimated and compared to locality sensitive hashing (LSH). Owing to the robustness consideration, the matching of LIPs across keyframes forms vivid patterns that are utilized for discriminative learning and detection with support vector machines. Experimental results on TRECVID-2003 corpus show that our proposed approach outperforms other popular methods including the techniques with LSH in terms of retrieval and detection effectiveness. In addition, the proposed LIP-IS successfully speeds up OOS for more than ten times and possesses several avorable properties compared to LSH.

2005 Common Pattern Discovery Using Earth Mover's Distance and Local Flow Maximization
abstract
In this paper, we present a novel segmentation-insensitive approach for mining common patterns from 2 images. We develop an algorithm using the earth movers distance (EMD) framework, unary and adaptive neighborhood color similarity. We then propose a novel local flow maximization approach to provide the best estimation of location and scale of the common pattern. This is achieved by performing an iterative optimization in search of the most stable flows' centroid. Common pattern discovery is difficult owing to the huge search space and problem domain. We intend to solve this problem by reducing the search space through identifying the location and a reduced spatial space for common pattern discovery. Experimental results justify the effectiveness and the potential of the approach
