2023 Studying Mind Perception in Social Robotics Implicitly: The Need for Validation and Norming
abstract
The recent shift towards incorporating implicit measurements into the mind perception studies in social robotics has come along with its promises and challenges. The implicit tasks can go beyond the limited scope of the explicit tasks and increase the robustness of empirical investigations in human-robot interaction (HRI). However, designing valid and reliable implicit tasks requires norming and validating all stimuli to ensure no confounding factors interfere with the experimental manipulations. We conducted a lexical norming study to systematically explore the concepts suitable for an implicit task that measures mind perception induced by social robots. Two-hundred seventy-four participants rated an expanded and strictly selected list of forty mental capacities in two categories: Agency and Experience, and in two levels of capacities: High and Low. We used the partitioning around medoids algorithm as an objective way of revealing the clusters. We discussed the different clustering solutions in light of the previous findings. We consulted on frequency-based natural language processing (NLP) on the answers to the open-ended questions. The NLP analyses verified the significance of clear instructions and the presence of some common conceptualizations across dimensions. We proposed a systematic approach that encourages validation and norming studies, which will further improve the reliability and reproducibility of HRI studies.

2021 Automatic Detection of Cyber Security Events from Turkish Twitter Stream and Newspaper Data
abstract
Cybersecurity experts scan the internet and face security events that influence user and institutions. An information security analyst regularly examines sources to stay up to date on security events in the domain of expertise. This may lead to a heavy workload for the information analysts if they do not have proper tools for security event investigation. For example, an information analyst may want to stay aware of cybersecurity events, such as a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on a government agency website. The earlier they detect and understand the threats, the longer the time remaining to alleviate the obstacle and to investigate the event. Therefore, information security analysts need to establish and keep situational awareness active about the security events and their likely effects. However, due to the large volume of information flow, it may be difficult for security analysts and researchers to detect and analyze security events timely. It is important to detect security events timely. This study aims at developing tools that are able to provide timely reports of security incidents. A recent challenge is that the internet community use different languages to share information. For instance, information about security events in Turkey is mostly shared on the internet in Turkish. The present study investigates automatic detection of security incidents in Turkish by processing data from Twitter and news media. It proposes an automatic prototype, Turkish-specific software system that can detect cybersecurity events in real time.

2021 Continuous improvement on maturity and capability of Security Operation Centres
abstract
Abstract This study addresses maturity and capability assessment of Security Operation Centres (SOC). It aims to contribute to continuous improvement for SOCs by proposing a complementary methodology that provides SOCs a self‐assessment capability. The method basically involves an assessment of the gaps between the current and the desired states of the organization and facilitates determining critical aspects that have priority. The proposed methodology is based on the define, measure, analyze, improve, and control methodology of the Six Sigma approach and offers a service‐oriented improvement process for SOCs. The applicability of the methodology is demonstrated by a case study. We evaluated subject matter experts’ reviews using simplified conversation analysis as a qualitative, content‐analysis approach.

2021 Integrating Mobile Multimodal Interactions based on Programming By Demonstration
abstract
Mobile Multimodal Interaction aims at exploiting complementary aspects of human communication capacities and new mobile sensors. Recently, most mobile applications are limited to a basic interaction modality, namely touchscreen, which is subject to restricted interaction under certain situations. In this paper, we present On-the-Fly Interaction Editor (OFIE), an application that allows mobile end-users to define and integrate sensor-based unimodal and multimodal input interactions in their already installed applications according to their contexts. OFIE is based on the Event-Condition-Action rules and Programming By Demonstration approach that allows end-users to demonstrate their expected action simply by performing it on the application’s interface. We evaluated OFIE through a controlled user study. Our evaluation involves 15 participants distributed on 4 groups based on their programming experience. Each participant was invited to integrate six input interactions (three multimodal inputs). The initial results show that end-users are able to successfully integrate sensor-based input interactions using OFIE.

2015 "Read That Article": Exploring Synergies between Gaze and Speech Interaction
abstract
Gaze information has the potential to benefit Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) tasks, particularly when combined with speech. Gaze can improve our understanding of the user intention, as a secondary input modality, or it can be used as the main input modality by users with some level of permanent or temporary impairments. In this paper we describe a multimodal HCI system prototype which supports speech, gaze and the combination of both. The system has been developed for Active Assisted Living scenarios.

2014 The analysis of feature selection methods and classification algorithms in permission based Android malware detection
abstract
Android mobile devices have reached a widespread use since the past decade, thus leading to an increase in the number and variety of applications on the market. However, from the perspective of information security, the user control of sensitive information has been shadowed by the fast development and rich variety of the applications. In the recent state of the art, users are subject to responding numerous requests for permission about using their private data to be able run an application. The awareness of the user about data protection and its relationship to permission requests is crucial for protecting the user against malicious software. Nevertheless, the slow adaptation of users to novel technologies suggests the need for developing automatic tools for detecting malicious software. In the present study, we analyze two major aspects of permission-based malware detection in Android applications: Feature selection methods and classification algorithms. Within the framework of the assumptions specified for the analysis and the data used for the analysis, our findings reveal a higher performance for the Random Forest and J48 decision tree classification algorithms for most of the selected feature selection methods.
