| 2016 | Time-domain precoding for LTE-over-copper systemsabstractCrosstalk cancellation is a crucial issue for traditional digital subscriber line systems. For LTE-over-copper systems, however, the need for crosstalk cancellation varies depending on the analog fronthauling architecture and its parameters. A crosstalk handler that is decoupled as much as possible from the rest of the system architecture is thus preferred. Therefore, we propose a time-domain precoding scheme specifically in downstream direction to separate the precoding unit from the LTE signal flow, and perform crosstalk cancellation in an on-demand manner. Estimation of all direct and crosstalk paths is assisted by LTE cell-specific reference signals. The time-domain precoder transforms the interference channel into a crosstalk-free channel with identical direct paths, which allows for low-complexity inter-symbol interference mitigation. We evaluate the concept in terms of signal-to-noise ratio provided for LTE signals using measured wireline channel data. | 2015 | Enabling DSL and radio on the same copper pairabstractTo increase indoor coverage for mobile services, we propose a residential small cell infrastructure making use of the existing copper plant. The system is cabinet-based, collocated with VDSL2 and uses small pieces of spectrum next to VDSL2. Inspired by the Ericsson Radio Dot System, it challenges the femtocell paradigm offering full macro functionality in the small cells. An interesting service potential is offered albeit the added mobile traffic capacity is moderate as it is limited by the copper fronthaul. | 2015 | LTE over copper - Potential and limitationsabstractThe densification of mobile networks in order to meet increased capacity demands is ongoing, needed and costly. A few papers have been published based on the insight that the fixed broadband networks offer a multitude of sites, for instance our homes, for potential small cell deployment providing backhaul capacity and power without site costs. However, in order to reach economical large-scale benefits, we explore the case when radio systems are deployed in coexistence with DSL. In this paper, we establish the feasibility of such a concept under constraints invoked by state-of-the-art and emerging systems (3GPP, VDSL2 and G.fast) and make statements about the required architecture. We also point out that the enthusiasm of previously published results should be lowered a notch. | 2014 | Simple and Causal Copper Cable Model Suitable for G.fast FrequenciesabstractG.fast is a new standard from the International Telecommunication Union, which targets 1 Gb/s over short copper loops using frequencies up to 212 MHz. This new technology requires accurate parametric cable models for simulation, design, and performance evaluation tests. Some existing copper cable models were designed for the very high speed digital subscriber line spectra, i.e., frequencies up to 30 MHz, and adopt assumptions that are violated when the frequency range is extended to G.fast frequencies. This paper introduces a simple and causal cable model that is able to accurately characterize copper loops composed by single or multiple segments, in both frequency and time domains. Results using G.fast topologies show that, apart from being accurate, the new model is attractive due to its low computational cost and closed-form expressions for fitting its parameters to measurement data. | 2013 | Simple and causal twisted-pair channel models for G.fast SystemsabstractThe use of a hybrid copper and fiber architecture is attractive in both fixed access and mobile backhauling scenarios. This trend led the industry and academia to start developing the fourth generation broadband system, which aims at achieving bit-rates of 1 Gb/s over short copper loops. In this context, accurate models of short twisted-pair cables operating at relatively high frequencies are key elements. This work describes new parametric cable models that incorporate four important characteristics: support of frequencies up to 200 MHz, few parameters, causal impulse responses and require relatively easy fitting procedures. The results show that the models achieve good accuracy for single segments, which are the expected topology for G.fast deployments. | 2008 | Common Mode Characterization and Channel Model Verification for Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) CableabstractThis paper investigates common-mode propagation in shielded twisted pair cables. The common mode exhibits great potential for improving the throughput in emerging wireline systems. The design of corresponding transmission schemes over multipair copper cables requires accurate knowledge of the channel properties. We present measurement and modeling results and investigate the feasibility of using standard differential- mode models for data fitting in multiconductor transmission-line modelling of common-mode paths. | 2003 | A performance bound on PSD-constrained PAR reductionabstractCommunication systems using multicarrier modulation suffer from a high peak-to-peak ratio, PAR. In this work we use the tone reservation approach to PAR reduction, where a subset of the tones are used for PAR reduction. We derive a bound on the achievable performance under a PSD constraint on the transmit signal. Using this bound, we show that as long as a moderate reduction performance is needed, this could be achieved with an almost arbitrary selection of the PAR reduction tones. This bounding technique also demonstrates that, applied to an ADSL-like system, the tone reservation approach could be used for PAR reduction down to about 12 dB, considering critically sampled signals. | 2002 | On the capacity of the copper cable channel using the common modeabstractThe common-mode (CM) signal in wireline transmission systems has proven to provide valuable information exploited for mitigating narrowband noise at the receive side. We focus on the case of broadband noise. Treating the CM signal as an additional receive signal, we investigate the capacity of the copper cable channel for different levels of coordination among the users. We introduce a channel model which includes the common-mode paths and derive a suitable form of the channel capacity formula. CM crosstalk measurement results, essential for evaluation of the channel capacity, are presented. Using the measurement data, exemplary results of capacity gain achievable by CM-aided data transmission over the copper cable are shown. | 2002 | An approach to analog mitigation of RFIabstractAmong all noise sources present in wireline transmission systems we focus on one special type: narrowband radio frequency interference generated by radio amateurs (RAM) and broadcast radio stations. This disturbance, characterized by high power and narrow bandwidth, has the potential of overloading the receiver's analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Once the ADC is in saturation, any countermeasure taken in digital domain will fail. A viable way to face this problem is cancellation using the common-mode signal as a reference. This paper describes in detail an adaptive, mixed-signal, narrowband interference canceller employing a modified recursive least-squares algorithm, which is split into an analog and a digital part. The mixed-signal approach enables the circuit to generate an interference-cancelling signal of several MHz while operating the adaptive algorithm at some kilohertz. Simulation as well as measurement results show a steady-state disturbance suppression of about 35 dB. The convergence speed is high enough to protect the ADC from overloading due to time-variant HAM interference. Per Ödling, Per Ola Börjesson, Thomas Magesacher, Tomas Nordström |

| 2002 | Symbol time offset estimation in coherent OFDM systemsabstractThis paper presents a symbol time offset estimator for coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The estimator exploits both the redundancy in the cyclic prefix and available pilot symbols used for channel estimation. The estimator is robust against frequency offsets and is suitable for use in dispersive channels. We base the estimator on the maximum-likelihood estimator for the additive white Gaussian noise channel. Simulations for an example system indicate a system performance as close as 0.6 dB to a perfectly synchronized system. | 2000 | Making MLSD decisions by thresholding the matched filter outputabstractThis paper presents an iterative detector that, by thresholding the output of the matched filter, gives maximum-likelihood sequence detector (MLSD) decisions on binary, antipodally modulated symbols that have been corrupted by intersymbol interference and additive Gaussian noise. The detector will make decisions on some, but often not all, of the symbols in a transmitted sequence, and those decisions will be the same decisions as the MLSD would have made. The number of symbols that are detected is stochastic, varying from sequence to sequence. The basis of the detector is a bound on a crossterm of the quadratic form in the log-likelihood function for the transmitted sequence. The detector is simple in structure, consisting of a matched filter and two variable threshold values for each symbol. Per Ödling, Håkan B. Eriksson, Per Ola Börjesson |

| 1999 | Symbol time offset estimation in coherent OFDM systemsabstractThis paper presents a symbol time offset estimator for coherent OFDM systems. This estimator exploits both the redundancy in the cyclic prefix and the pilot symbols used for channel estimation. The estimator is robust against frequency offsets and is suitable for use in dispersive channels. We base the estimator on the ML estimator for the AWGN channel. Simulations of an example system indicate a system performance as close as 0.3 dB to a perfectly synchronized system. Compared to an estimator not using pilots, our estimator's performance could allow a shorter cyclic prefix and thus a more spectrally efficient system. | 1999 | Asynchronous Zipper [subscriber line duplex method]abstractPreviously the authors presented a novel duplex method for very high bit-rate digital subscriber lines (VDSL) called Zipper. With this method all VDSL-modems on different wires in the same bindergroup have to be time-synchronized to avoid near-end cross-talk (NEXT). We describe a method which enables Zipper to run in a time-asynchronous mode. By introducing pulse-shaping in the transmitter and windowing in the receiver the NEXT is almost completely suppressed even though the synchronization between modems on neighboring lines is skipped. The remaining NEXT and efficiency loss due to pulse-shaping and windowing results in only a small bit-rate performance loss, typically less than 10% compared to the time-synchronized Zipper. However, with the new freedom of optimizing the lengths of the cyclic suffices with asynchronous Zipper, there may even be a small improvement in bit-rate performance for short wires. | 1999 | A time and frequency synchronization scheme for multiuser OFDMabstractWe present a multiuser synchronization scheme for tracking the mobile's uplink time and frequency offsets. It uses the redundancy introduced by the cyclic prefix and does not need additional pilots. We show performance results of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based radio interface based on the universal mobile telecommunication system (UMTS) parameters. For a UMTS-typical mobile channel environment, the performance of a coherent system employing the scheme is virtually indistinguishable from the performance of a perfectly synchronized system. In a differentially modulated system, synchronization errors decrease the system performance by about 0.7 dB compared to a perfectly synchronized system. | 1999 | Zipper: a duplex method for VDSL based on DMTabstractWe present a new duplex scheme, called Zipper, for discrete multitone (DMT)-based very high bit-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) systems on copper wires. This scheme divides the available bandwidth by assigning different subcarriers for the upstream and downstream directions. It has high flexibility to divide the capacity between the up and downstream, as well as good coexistence possibilities with other systems such as ADSL. Simulation results show the high bit-rate performance in different environments such as mixed ADSL and VDSL traffic under radio frequency interference and with different background noise sources. It has a high flexibility to divide the capacity between the up- and downstream as well as good coexistence possibilities with other systems such as ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line). | 1998 | OFDM channel estimation by singular value decompositionabstractWe present and analyze low-rank channel estimators for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems using the frequency correlation of the channel. Low-rank approximations based on the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) have been proposed, but these suffer from poor performance when the channel is not sample spaced. We apply the theory of optimal rank-reduction to linear minimum mean-squared error (LMMSE) estimators and show that these estimators, when using a fixed design, are robust to changes in channel correlation and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The performance is presented in terms of uncoded symbol-error rate (SER) for a system using 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). | 1994 | A simultaneous maximum likelihood estimator based on a generalized matched filterabstractThe paper discusses parameter estimation and detection in Laplace distributed noise. The received signal is modeled as r(/spl middot/)=As(/spl middot/,/spl theta/)+n(/spl middot/), where A is an unknown amplitude, /spl theta/ is the parameter vector to be estimated and n(/spl middot/) is independent Laplace distributed noise. The simultaneous maximum likelihood estimator of (A,/spl theta/) is derived. The derived estimator is based on a combination of a weighted median filter [Astola and Nuevo, 1992] and a generalized form of the ordinary matched filter [Gustavsson and Borjesson, 1992]. Examples of performance for four different detectors are given for a case of binary detection, when the amplitude A or the signal shape s(/spl middot/,/spl theta/) are varied. Simulations indicate that the performance of detectors based on the generalized matched filter is not particularly dependent on either the estimate of the amplitude A or the signal shape.> Jan-Olof Gustavsson, Per Ola Börjesson |

| 1994 | Combined linear-Viterbi equalizers-a comparative study and a minimax designabstractCombined linear-Viterbi equalizer (CLVE) is a term often used for a class of digital receivers reducing the complexity of the Viterbi detector by assuming an approximate channel model together with linear pre-equalization of the received data. The authors reconsider a weighted least squares design technique for CLVEs by introducing a minimax criterion for suppressing the strongest component of the residual intersymbol interference. Odling (1993) studied the performance of some proposed CLVE design methods and evaluated them by simulated bit error rates. The present authors investigate the performance of the minimax design and of the CLVE designs found in literature for two GSM test channels. They also present a comparison of the CLVE designs based on a common quadratic optimization criterion for the selection of the channel prefilter and the desired impulse response.> Nils Sundström, Ove Edfors, Per Ödling, Håkan B.
