2018 Learning to Explore via Meta-Policy Gradient
abstract
The performance of off-policy learning, including deep Q-learning and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), critically depends on the choice of the exploration policy. Existing exploration methods are mostly based on adding noise to the on-going actor policy and can only explore local regions close to what the actor policy dictates. In this work, we develop a simple meta-policy gradient algorithm that allows us to adaptively learn the exploration policy in DDPG. Our algorithm allows us to train flexible exploration behaviors that are independent of the actor policy, yielding a global exploration that significantly speeds up the learning process. With an extensive study, we show that our method significantly improves the sample-efficiency of DDPG on a variety of reinforcement learning continuous control tasks.

2014 Online Classification Using a Voted RDA Method
abstract
We propose a voted dual averaging method for on- line classification problems with explicit regularization. This method employs the update rule of the regularized dual averaging (RDA) method proposed by Xiao, but only on the subsequence of training examples where a classification error is made. We derive a bound on the number of mistakes made by this method on the training set, as well as its generalization error rate. We also intro- duce the concept of relative strength of regularization, and show how it affects the mistake bound and gener- alization performance. We examine the method using l1-regularization on a large-scale natural language pro- cessing task, and obtained state-of-the-art classification performance with fairly sparse models.

2012 Multiview hierarchical bayesian regression model andapplication to online advertising
abstract
With the development of Web applications, large scale data are popular; and they are not only getting richer, but also ubiquitously interconnected with users and other objects in various ways, which brings about multi-view data with implicit structure. In this paper, we propose a novel hierarchical Bayesian mixture regression model, which discovers and then exploits the relationships among multiple views of the data to perform various machine learning tasks. A stochastic EM inference and learning algorithm is derived; and a parallel implementation in Hadoop MapReduce [9] paradigm is developed to scale up the learning. We apply the developed model and algorithm on click-through-rate (CTR) prediction and campaign targeting recommendation in online advertising to measure its effectiveness. The experiments on both synthetic data and large scale ads serving data from a real world online advertising exchange demonstrate the superior CTR prediction accuracy of our method compared to existing state-of-the-art methods. The results also show that our model can recommend high performance targeting features for online advertising campaigns.

2012 Generative Models for Evolutionary Clustering
abstract
This article studies evolutionary clustering, a recently emerged hot topic with many important applications, noticeably in dynamic social network analysis. In this article, based on the recent literature on nonparametric Bayesian models, we have developed two generative models: DPChain and HDP-HTM. DPChain is derived from the Dirichlet process mixture (DPM) model, with an exponential decaying component along with the time. HDP-HTM combines the hierarchical dirichlet process (HDP) with a hierarchical transition matrix (HTM) based on the proposed Infinite hierarchical Markov state model (iHMS). Both models substantially advance the literature on evolutionary clustering, in the sense that not only do they both perform better than those in the existing literature, but more importantly, they are capable of automatically learning the cluster numbers and explicitly addressing the corresponding issues. Extensive evaluations have demonstrated the effectiveness and the promise of these two solutions compared to the state-of-the-art literature.

2008 Dirichlet Process Based Evolutionary Clustering
abstract
Evolutionary Clustering has emerged as an important research topic in recent literature of data mining, and solutions to this problem have found a wide spectrum of applications, particularly in social network analysis. In this paper, based on the recent literature on Dirichlet processes, we have developed two different and specific models as solutions to this problem: DPChain and HDP-EVO. Both models substantially advance the literature on evolutionary clustering in the sense that not only they both perform better than the existing literature, but more importantly they are capable of automatically learning the cluster numbers and structures during the evolution. Extensive evaluations have demonstrated the effectiveness and promise of these models against the state-of-the-art literature.

2008 Evolutionary Clustering by Hierarchical Dirichlet Process with Hidden Markov State
abstract
This paper studies evolutionary clustering, which is a recently hot topic with many important applications, noticeably in social network analysis. In this paper, based on the recent literature on Hierarchical Dirichlet Process (HDP) and Hidden Markov Model (HMM), we have developed a statistical model HDP-HTM that combines HDP with a Hierarchical Transition Matrix (HTM) based on the proposed Infinite Hierarchical Hidden Markov State model (iH2MS) as an effective solution to this problem. The HDP-HTM model substantially advances the literature on evolutionary clustering in the sense that not only it performs better than the existing literature, but more importantly it is capable of automatically learning the cluster numbers and structures and at the same time explicitly addresses the correspondence issue during the evolution. Extensive evaluations have demonstrated the effectiveness and promise of this solution against the state-of-the-art literature.

2006 A Fast Adaptive Statistical Genetic Motion Search Algorithm for H.264/AVC^1
abstract
In H.264, motion estimation algorithm plays a significant role in computational cost and coding efficiency. In this paper, we proposed a novel fast adaptive statistical genetic motion search algorithm for H.264/AVC.In our algorithm, we first make an early termination based on the estimation of stationary blocks by the predetermined thresholds with different block sizes. Based on the spatiotemporal predictive scheme, some starting points are well chosen to obtain good convergence rate. To adapt to fast motion and slow motion, a mutation mechanism is designed by exploiting the information of search range and direction based on the statistical distribution of motion vectors. Experimental data show that our proposed algorithm can achieve average speedup 29.3 with negligible average PSNR loss of 0.071 dB and average bit rate increase of 3.43% compared with full search algorithm. Compared with lightweight genetic search algorithm (LGSA) [9], our algorithm achieves speedup 7.92, PSNR gain 0.01 dB and bit rate decrease 14.96% averagely
