| 2014 | Beyond MTTDL: A Closed-Form RAID 6 Reliability EquationabstractWe introduce a new closed-form equation for estimating the number of data-loss events for a redundant array of inexpensive disks in a RAID-6 configuration. The equation expresses operational failures, their restorations, latent (sector) defects, and disk media scrubbing by time-based distributions that can represent non-homogeneous Poisson processes. It uses two-parameter Weibull distributions that allows the distributions to take on many different shapes, modeling increasing, decreasing, or constant occurrence rates. This article focuses on the statistical basis of the equation. It also presents time-based distributions of the four processes based on an extensive analysis of field data collected over several years from 10,000s of commercially available systems with 100,000s of disk drives. Our results for RAID-6 groups of size 16 indicate that the closed-form expression yields much more accurate results compared to the MTTDL reliability equation and matching computationally-intensive Monte Carlo simulations. | 2013 | A deduplication study for host-side caches in virtualized data center environmentsabstractFlash memory-based caches inside VM hypervisors can reduce I/O latencies and offload much of the I/O traffic from network-attached storage systems deployed in virtualized data centers. This paper explores the effectiveness of content deduplication in these large (typically 100s of GB) host-side caches. Previous deduplication studies focused on data mostly at rest in backup and archive applications. This study focuses on cached data and dynamic workloads within the shared VM infrastructure. We analyze I/O traces from six virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) I/O storms and two longterm CIFS studies and show that deduplication can reduce the data footprint inside host-side caches by as much as 67%. This in turn allows for caching a larger portion of the data set and improves the effective cache hit rate. More importantly, such increased caching efficiency can alleviate load from networked storage systems during I/O storms when most VM instances perform the same operation such as virus scans, OS patch installs, and reboots. | 2013 | Profiling and analyzing the I/O performance of NoSQL DBsabstractThe advent of the so-called NoSQL databases has brought about a new model of using storage systems. While traditional relational database systems took advantage of features offered by centrally-managed, enterprise-class storage arrays, the new generation of database systems with weaker data consistency models is content with using and manag- ing locally attached individual storage devices and providing data reliability and availability through high-level software features and protocols. This tutorial aims to review the architecture of selected NoSQL DBs to lay the foundations for understanding how these new DB systems behave. In particular, it focuses on how (in)efficiently these new systems use I/O and other resources to accomplish their work. The tutorial examines the behavior of several NoSQL DBs with an emphasis on Cassandra - a popular NoSQL DB system. It uses I/O traces and resource utilization profiles captured in private cloud deployments that use both dedicated directly attached storage as well as shared networked storage. Jiri Schindler |

| 2012 | I/O Characteristics of NoSQL DatabasesabstractThe advent of the so-called NoSQL databases has brought about a new model of using storage systems. While traditional relational database systems took advantage of features offered by centrally-managed, enterprise-class storage arrays, the new generation of database systems with weaker data consistency models is content with using and managing locally attached individual storage devices and providing data reliability and availability through high-level software features and protocols. This work aims to review the architecture of several existing NoSQL DBs with an emphasis on how they organize and access data in the shared-nothing locally-attached storage model. It shows how these systems operate under typical workloads (new inserts and point and range queries), what access characteristics they exhibit to storage systems. Finally, it examines how several recently developed key/value stores, schema-free document storage systems, and extensible column stores organize data on local filesystems on top of directly-attached disks and what system features they must (re)implement in order to provide the expected data reliability. | 2010 | Workload-aware storage layout for database systemsabstractThe performance of a database system depends strongly on the layout of database objects, such as indexes or tables, onto the underlying storage devices. A good layout will both balance the I/O workload generated by the database system and avoid the performance-degrading interference that can occur when concurrently accessed objects are stored on the same volume. In current practice, layout is typically guided by heuristics and rules of thumb, such as separating indexes and tables or striping all objects across all of the available storage devices. However, these guidelines may give poor results. In this paper, we address the problem of generating an optimized layout of a given set of database objects. Our layout optimizer goes beyond generic guidelines by making use of a description of the database system's I/O activity. We formulate the layout problem as a non-linear programming (NLP) problem and use the I/O description as input to an NLP solver. Our layout optimization technique, which is incorporated into a database layout advisor, identifies a layout that both balances load and avoids interference. We evaluate experimentally the efficacy of our approach and demonstrate that it can quickly identify non-trivial optimized layouts. Oguzhan Ozmen, Kenneth Salem, Jiri Schindler, Steve Daniel |

| 2007 | MultiMap: Preserving disk locality for multidimensional datasetsabstractMultiMap is an algorithm for mapping multidimensional datasets so as to preserve the data's spatial locality on disks. Without revealing disk-specific details to applications, MultiMap exploits modern disk characteristics to provide full streaming bandwidth for one (primary) dimension and maximally efficient non-sequential access (i.e., minimal seek and no rotational latency) for the other dimensions. This is in contrast to existing approaches, which either severely penalize non-primary dimensions or fail to provide full streaming bandwidth for any dimension. Experimental evaluation of a prototype implementation demonstrates MultiMap's superior performance for range and beam queries. On average, MultiMap reduces total I/O time by over 50% when compared to traditional linearized layouts and by over 30% when compared to space-filling curve approaches such as Z-ordering and Hilbert curves. For scans of the primary dimension, MultiMap and traditional linearized layouts provide almost two orders of magnitude higher throughput than space-filling curve approaches. Minglong Shao, Steven W. | 2007 | An analysis of latent sector errors in disk drivesabstractThe reliability measures in today's disk drive-based storage systems focus predominantly on protecting against complete disk failures. Previous disk reliability studies have analyzed empirical data in an attempt to better understand and predict disk failure rates. Yet, very little is known about the incidence of latent sector errors i.e., errors that go undetected until the corresponding disk sectors are accessed. Lakshmi N. Bairavasundaram, Garth R. | 2005 | Deconstructing Commodity Storage ClustersabstractThe traditional approach for characterizing complex systems is to run standard workloads and measure the resulting performance as seen by the end user. However, unique opportunities exist when characterizing a system that is itself constructed from standardized components: one can also look inside the system itself by instrumenting each of the components. In this paper, we show how intra-box instrumentation can help one understand the behavior of a large-scale storage cluster, the EMC Centera. In our analysis, we leverage standard tools for tracing both the disk and network traffic emanating from each node of the cluster. By correlating this traffic with the running workload, we are able to infer the structure of the software system (e.g., its write update protocol) as well as its policies (e.g., how it performs caching, replication, and load-balancing). Further, by imposing variable intra-box delays on network and disk traffic, we can confirm the causal relationships between network and disk events. Thus, we are able to infer the semantics of the messages between nodes without examining a single line of source code. Haryadi S. Gunawi, Nitin Agrawal 0001, Andrea C. Arpaci-Dusseau, Remzi H. | 2002 | Analysis of methods for scheduling low priority disk drive tasksabstractThis paper analyzes various algorithms for scheduling low priority disk drive tasks. The derived closed form solution is applicable to class of greedy algorithms that include a variety of background disk scanning applications. By paying close attention to many characteristics of modern disk drives, the analytical solutions achieve very high accuracy---the difference between the predicted response times and the measurements on two different disks is only 3% for all but one examined workload. This paper also proves a theorem which shows that background tasks implemented by greedy algorithms can be accomplished with very little seek penalty. Using greedy algorithm gives a 10% shorter response time for the foreground application requests and up to a 20% decrease in total background task run time compared to results from previously published techniques. | 2000 | Automated disk drive characterization (poster)abstractDIXtrac is a program that automatically characterizes the performance of modern disk drives. This extended abstract overviews the contents of [3], which describes and validates DIXtrac's algorithms for extracting accurate values for over 100 performance-critical parameters in 2-6 minutes without human intervention or special hardware support. The extracted data includes detailed layout and geometry information, mechanical timings, cache management policies, and command processing overheads. DIXtrac is validated by configuring a detailed disk simulator with its extracted parameters; in most cases, the resulting accuracies match those of the most accurate disk simulators reported in the literature. To date, DIXtrac has been successfully used on ten different models from four different manufacturers. A growing database of validated disk characteristics is available in DiskSim [1] format at http://www.ece.cmu.edu/~ganger/disksim/diskspecs.html. Jiri Schindler, Gregory R. Ganger |
