| 2026 | Revisiting Conjunctive Query Entailment for SabstractWe clarify the complexity of answering unions of conjunctive queries over knowledge bases formulated in the description logic S, the extension of ALC with transitive roles. Contrary to what existing partial results suggested, we show that the problem is, in fact, 2ExpTime-complete; hardness already holds in the presence of two transitive roles and for Boolean conjunctive queries. We complement this result by showing that the problem remains in coNExpTime when the input query is rooted or is restricted to use at most one transitive role (but may use arbitrarily many non-transitive roles). | 2025 | Advances in Logic-Based Entity Resolution: Enhancing ASPEN with Local Merges and Optimality CriteriaabstractIn this paper, we present ASPEN+, which extends an existing ASP-based system, ASPEN,for collective entity resolution with two important functionalities: support for local merges and new optimality criteria for preferred solutions. Indeed, ASPEN only supports so-called global merges of entity-referring constants (e.g. author ids), in which all occurrences of matched constants are treated as equivalent and merged accordingly. However, it has been argued that when resolving data values, local merges are often more appropriate, as e.g. some instances of ‘J. Lee’ may refer to ‘Joy Lee’, while others should be matched with ‘Jake Lee’. In addition to allowing such local merges, ASPEN+ offers new optimality criteria for selecting solutions, such as minimizing rule violations or maximising the number of rules supporting a merge. Our main contributions are thus (1) the formalisation and computational analysis of various notions of optimal solution, and (2) an extensive experimental evaluation on real-world datasets, demonstrating the effect of local merges and the new optimality criteria on both accuracy and runtime. | 2024 | Inductive Knowledge Graph Completion with GNNs and Rules: An AnalysisabstractThe task of inductive knowledge graph completion requires models to learn inference patterns from a training graph, which can then be used to make predictions on a disjoint test graph. Rule-based methods seem like a natural fit for this task, but in practice they significantly underperform state-of-the-art methods based on Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), such as NBFNet. We hypothesise that the underperformance of rule-based methods is due to two factors: (i) implausible entities are not ranked at all and (ii) only the most informative path is taken into account when determining the confidence in a given link prediction answer. To analyse the impact of these factors, we study a number of variants of a rule-based approach, which are specifically aimed at addressing the aforementioned issues. We find that the resulting models can achieve a performance which is close to that of NBFNet. Crucially, the considered variants only use a small fraction of the evidence that NBFNet relies on, which means that they largely keep the interpretability advantage of rule-based methods. Moreover, we show that a further variant, which does look at the full KG, consistently outperforms NBFNet. Akash Anil, Víctor Gutiérrez-Basulto, Yazmín Ibáñez-García, Steven Schockaert |

| 2024 | ASPEN: ASP-Based System for Collective Entity ResolutionabstractIn this paper, we present ASPEN, an answer set programming (ASP) implementation of a recently proposed declarative framework for collective entity resolution (ER). While an ASP encoding had been previously suggested, several practical issues had been neglected, most notably, the question of how to efficiently compute the (externally defined) similarity facts that are used in rule bodies. This leads us to propose new variants of the encodings (including Datalog approximations) and show how to employ different functionalities of ASP solvers to compute (maximal) solutions, and (approximations of) the sets of possible and certain merges. A comprehensive experimental evaluation of ASPEN on real-world datasets shows that the approach is promising, achieving high accuracy in real-life ER scenarios. Our experiments also yield useful insights into the relative merits of different types of (approximate) ER solutions, the impact of recursion, and factors influencing performance. | 2024 | BLEnD: A Benchmark for LLMs on Everyday Knowledge in Diverse Cultures and LanguagesabstractLarge language models (LLMs) often lack culture-specific everyday knowledge, especially across diverse regions and non-English languages. Existing benchmarks for evaluating LLMs' cultural sensitivities are usually limited to a single language or online sources like Wikipedia, which may not reflect the daily habits, customs, and lifestyles of different regions. That is, information about the food people eat for their birthday celebrations, spices they typically use, musical instruments youngsters play or the sports they practice in school is not always explicitly written online. To address this issue, we introduce BLEnD, a hand-crafted benchmark designed to evaluate LLMs' everyday knowledge across diverse cultures and languages. The benchmark comprises 52.6k question-answer pairs from 16 countries/regions, in 13 different languages, including low-resource ones such as Amharic, Assamese, Azerbaijani, Hausa, and Sundanese. We evaluate LLMs in two formats: short-answer questions, and multiple-choice questions. We show that LLMs perform better in cultures that are more present online, with a maximum 57.34% difference in GPT-4, the best-performing model, in the short-answer format.Furthermore, we find that LLMs perform better in their local languages for mid-to-high-resource languages. Interestingly, for languages deemed to be low-resource, LLMs provide better answers in English. We make our dataset publicly available at: https://github.com/nlee0212/BLEnD. | 2024 | Containment of Graph Queries Modulo SchemaabstractWith multiple graph database systems on the market and a new Graph Query Language standard on the horizon, it is time to revisit some classic static analysis problems. Query containment, arguably the workhorse of static analysis, has already received a lot of attention in the context of graph databases, but not so in the presence of schemas. We aim to change this. Because there is no universal agreement yet on what graph schemas should be, we rely on an abstract formalism borrowed from the knowledge representation community: we assume that schemas are expressed in a description logic (DL). We identify a suitable DL that capture both basic constraints on the labels of incident nodes and edges, and more refined schema features such as participation, cardinality, and unary key constraints. Basing upon, and extending, the rich body of work on DLs, we solve the containment modulo schema problem for unions of conjunctive regular path queries (UCRPQs) and schemas whose descriptions do not mix inverses and counting. For two-way UCRPQs (UC2RPQs) we solve the problem under additional assumptions that tend to hold in practice: we restrict the use of concatenation in queries and participation constraints in schemas. | 2023 | Finite Entailment of UCRPQs over ALC Ontologies (Extended Abstract)abstractWe investigate the problem of finite entailment of ontology-mediated queries. We consider the expressive query language, unions of conjunctive regular path queries (UCRPQs), extending the well-known class of unions of conjunctive queries, with regular expressions over roles. We look at ontologies formulated using the description logic ALC, and show a tight 2ExpTime upper bound for finite entailment of UCRPQs. | 2023 | Combining Global and Local Merges in Logic-based Entity ResolutionabstractIn the recently proposed LACE framework for collective entity resolution, logical rules and constraints are used to identify pairs of entity references (e.g. author or paper ids) that denote the same entity. This identification is global: all occurrences of those entity references (possibly across multiple database tuples) are deemed equal and can be merged. By contrast, a local form of merge is often more natural when identifying pairs of data values, e.g. some occurrences of 'J. Smith' may be equated with 'Joe Smith', while others should merge with 'Jane Smith'. This motivates us to extend LACE with local merges of values and explore the computational properties of the resulting formalism. | 2023 | Answering regular path queries mediated by unrestricted SQ ontologiesabstractA prime application of description logics is ontology-mediated query answering, with the query language often reaching far beyond instance queries. Here, we investigate this task for positive existential two-way regular path queries and ontologies formulated in the expressive description logic SQu, where SQu denotes the extension of the basic description logic ALC with transitive roles (S) and qualified number restrictions (Q) which can be unrestrictedly applied to both non-transitive and transitive roles (⋅u). Notably, the latter is usually forbidden in expressive description logics. As the main contribution, we show decidability of ontology-mediated query answering in that setting and establish tight complexity bounds, namely 2ExpTime-completeness in combined complexity and coNP-completeness in data complexity. Since the lower bounds are inherited from the fragment ALC, we concentrate on providing upper bounds. As main technical tools we establish a tree-like countermodel property and a characterization of when a query is not satisfied in a tree-like interpretation. Together, these results allow us to use an automata-based approach to query answering. Víctor Gutiérrez-Basulto, Yazmín Ibáñez-García, Jean Christoph Jung, Filip Murlak |

| 2021 | A Description Logic for Analogical ReasoningabstractOntologies formalise how the concepts from a given domain are interrelated. Despite their clear potential as a backbone for explainable AI, existing ontologies tend to be highly incomplete, which acts as a significant barrier to their more widespread adoption. To mitigate this issue, we present a mechanism to infer plausible missing knowledge, which relies on reasoning by analogy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that studies analogical reasoning within the setting of description logic ontologies. After showing that the standard formalisation of analogical proportion has important limitations in this setting, we introduce an alternative semantics based on bijective mappings between sets of features. We then analyse the properties of analogies under the proposed semantics, and show among others how it enables two plausible inference patterns: rule translation and rule extrapolation. | 2020 | Ontology Focusing: Knowledge-Enriched Databases on DemandabstractWe propose a novel use of ontologies to aid the ondemand design of data-centric systems. By means of a process that we call focusing, a schema for a (possibly knowledge-enriched) database can be obtained semi-automatically from an existing ontology and a specification of the scope of the desired system. We formalize the inputs and outputs of focusing, and identify relevant computational problems: finding a schema via focusing, testing its consistency, and answering queries in the knowledge-enriched databases it produces. These definitions are independent from the ontology language. We then study focusing for selected description logics as ontology languages, and popular classes of queries for specifying the scope of the system. For several representative combinations, we study the decidability and complexity of the identified computational problems. As a by-product, we isolate (and solve) mixed variants of the classical satisfiability and entailment problems, where selected predicates are required to have finite extension, as well as the nullability problem, which is closely related to query emptiness. | 2020 | On Finite Entailment of Non-Local Queries in Description LogicsabstractWe study the problem of finite entailment of ontology-mediated queries. Going beyond local queries, we allow transitive closure over roles. We focus on ontologies formulated in the description logics ALCOI and ALCOQ, extended with transitive closure. For both logics, we show 2EXPTIME upper bounds for finite entailment of unions of conjunctive queries with transitive closure. We also provide a matching lower bound by showing that finite entailment of conjunctive queries with transitive closure in ALC is 2EXPTIME-hard Tomasz Gogacz, Víctor Gutiérrez-Basulto, Albert Gutowski, Yazmín Ibáñez-García, Filip Murlak |

| 2020 | Plausible Reasoning about EL-Ontologies using Concept InterpolationabstractDescription logics (DLs) are standard knowledge representation languages for modelling ontologies, i.e. knowledge about concepts and the relations between them. Unfortunately, DL ontologies are difficult to learn from data and time-consuming to encode manually. As a result, ontologies for broad domains are almost inevitably incomplete. In recent years, several data-driven approaches have been proposed for automatically extending such ontologies. One family of methods rely on characterizations of concepts that are derived from text descriptions. While such characterizations do not capture ontological knowledge directly, they encode information about the similarity between different concepts that can be exploited for filling in the gaps in existing ontologies. To this end, several inductive inference mechanisms have already been proposed, but these have been defined and used in a heuristic fashion. In this paper, we instead propose an inductive inference mechanism which is based on a clear model-theoretic semantics, and can thus be tightly integrated with standard deductive reasoning. We particularly focus on interpolation, a powerful commonsense reasoning mechanism which is closely related to cognitive models of category-based induction. Apart from the formalization of the underlying semantics, as our main technical contribution we provide computational complexity bounds for reasoning in EL with this interpolation mechanism. | 2019 | Relaxing and Restraining Queries for OBDAabstractWe advocate the use of ontologies for relaxing and restraining queries, so that they retrieve either more or less answers, enabling the exploration of a given dataset. We propose a set of rewriting rules to relax and restrain conjunctive queries (CQs) over datasets mediated by an ontology written in a dialect of DL-Lite with complex role inclusions (CRIs). The addition of CRI enables the representation of knowledge about data involving ordered hierarchies of categories, in the style of multi-dimensional data models. Although CRIs in general destroy the first-order rewritability of CQs, we identify settings in which CQs remain rewritable. | 2019 | On Finite and Unrestricted Query Entailment beyond SQ with Number Restrictions on Transitive RolesabstractWe study the description logic SQ with number restrictions applicable to transitive roles, extended with either nominals or inverse roles. We show tight 2EXPTIME upper bounds for unrestricted entailment of regular path queries for both extensions and finite entailment of positive existential queries for nominals. For inverses, we establish 2EXPTIME-completeness for unrestricted and finite entailment of instance queries (the latter under restriction to a single, transitive role). | 2017 | Number Restrictions on Transitive Roles in Description Logics with NominalsabstractWe study description logics (DLs) supporting number restrictions on transitive roles. We first take a look at SOQ and SON with binary and unary coding of numbers, and provide algorithms for the satisfiability problem and tight complexity bounds ranging from EXPTIME to NEXPTIME. We then show that by allowing for counting only up to one (functionality), inverse roles and role inclusions can be added without losing decidability. We finally investigate DLs of the DL-Lite-family, and show that, in the presence of role inclusions, the core fragment becomes undecidable.
