1988 A fiber optic tactical voice/data network based on FDDI
abstract
An asynchronous high-speed fiber-optic local area network is described that supports ordinary data packet traffic simultaneously with synchronous TI voice traffic over a common FDDI (fiber-optic distributed data interface) token ring channel. A voice interface module was developed that parses, buffers, and resynchronizes the voice data to the packet network. The technique is general, however, and can be applied to any deterministic class of networks, including multitier backbones. A conventional single-token access protocol was used at the lowest layer, with fixed packet sizes for voice and variable for data. In addition, the higher-layer packet data protocols are allowed to operate independently of those for the voice, thereby permitting great flexibility in reconfiguring the network. Voice call setup and switching functions were performed external to the network with PABX equipment.>

1985 A Synchronous Fiber Optic Ring Local Area Network for Multigigabit/s Mixed-Traffic Communication
abstract
A synchronous-ring fiber optic local area network is reported that facilitates the simultaneous transmission of packet and real-time traffic at gigabit/s rates, minimizes the amount of high-speed logic, and simplifies the user interface to the network. The novelty of the technique is based on 1) suspending in transit around the ring's circumference an integral number of data frames and 2) achieving this condition by skewing the frame clock rate a small amount ( < 1 percent). Rather than use the whole data frame as one packet destined to a specific user (as in a slotted ring), we instead time multiplex many individual channels into the data frame. This technique only becomes feasible for local networks as data rates approach the Gbit/s range. This departure from other synchronous rings results in several advantages both in terms of system performance and hardware simplicity.

1982 GaAlAs Laser Temperature Effects on the BER Performance of a Gigabit PCM Fiber System
abstract
The performance of a gigahit pulse-code modulation fiber system has been investigated as a function of laser temperature. The bit error rate shows an improvement for temperature in the range of-15\deg C to -35\deg C.A tradeoff seems possible between relaxation oscillation, rise time, and signal-to-noise ratio.
