Performance analysis in the real world of on line servicesabstractPerformance analysis has always been an integral part of a computer architect's agenda. However, the term performance is used largely to measure “speed”. The dictionary defines performance more broadly as “the manner in which or the efficiency with which something reacts or fulfills its intended purpose”. In today's internet based on line computing environment, performance has taken a broader view. For example, power and energy efficiency is becoming as or more important measures of system performance as speed of computation. The industry's ability to deliver speed has outpaced the ability of most applications to consume it effectively. This talk will discuss how performance is viewed in the world of on line web services from an end user's point of view. Dileep Bhandarkar

Billion Transistor Chips in Mainstream Enterprise Platforms of the FutureabstractToday’s leading edge microprocessors like the Intel’s Itanium ® 2 Processor feature over 220 million transistors in 0.18µm semiconductor process technology. Nanotechnology that continues to drive Moore’s Law provides a doubling of the transistor density every two years. This indicates that a Billion transistor chip is possible in the 65 nm technology within the next 3 to 4 years. Such chips can be used in mainstream enterprise server platforms. This talk will review the progress in semiconductor technology over the last 3 decades since the introduction of the first microprocessor in 1971. A short video tape will provide a historical perspective on Moore’s Law in the form of an interview with co-founder Gordon Moore, and his thoughts for the future of semiconductor technology. Key trends in high end microprocessor design including multi-threading and multi-core will be covered. We have started to see “SMP-on-a-chip” designs for high-end enterprise servers where two processors with Level 2 (L2) cache are incorporated on a single chip. Future microprocessors will offer higher levels of multiprocessor capability on chip as the transistor density increases. Dileep Bhandarkar

Performance Characterization of the Pentium(r) Pro ProcessorabstractIn this paper, we characterize the performance of several business and technical benchmarks on a Pentium Pro processor based system. Various architectural data are collected using a performance monitoring counter tool. Results show that the Pentium Pro processor achieves significantly lower cycles per instruction than the Pentium processor due to its out of order and speculative execution, and non-blocking cache and memory system. Its higher clock frequency also contributes to even higher performance. Dileep Bhandarkar, Jianxun Jason Ding

Performance Characterization of the Alpha 21164 Microprocessor Using TP and SPEC WorkloadsabstractThis paper compares the performance characteristics of the Alpha 21164 to the previous-generation 21064 microprocessor. Measurements on the 21164-based AlphaServer 8200 system are compared to the 21064-based DEC 7000 server using several commercial and technical workloads. The data analyzed includes cycles per instruction, multiple-issued instructions, branch predictions, stall components, cache misses, and instruction frequencies. The AlphaServer 8200 provides 2 to 3 times the performance of the DEC 7000 server based on the faster clock, larger on-chip cache, expanded multiple-issuing, and lower cache/memory latencies and higher bandwidth. | 1994 | Characterization of Alpha AXP Performance Using TP and SPEC WorkloadsabstractThe characteristics of several commercial and technical workloads on the DEC 7000 AXP system are compared using built-in hardware monitors. The data analyzed include total instructions, cycles, multiple-issued instructions, stall components, cache misses, and instruction types. The data indicates that the two classes of workloads have vastly different characteristics and impose different requirements on the system design. Compared to VAX, Alpha AXP takes advantage of lower cycles per instruction and cycle time to achieve a significant performance advantage. The cache and memory interconnect subsystems are expected to play a crucial role in the performance of future systems. A simple model for evaluating the effects of various design tradeoffs based on the data collected by using hardware monitors is proposed.> Zarka Cvetanovic, Dileep Bhandarkar

Performance From Architecture: Comparing a RISC and CISC with Similar Hardware OrganizationabstractPerformance comparisons across different computer architectures cannot usually separate the architectural contribution from various implementation and technology contributions to performance. This paper compares an example implementation from the RISC and CISC architectural schools (a MIPS M/2000 and a Digital VAX 8700) on nine of the ten SPEC benchmarks. The organizational similarity of these machines provides an opportunity to examine the purely architect ural advantages of RISC.The RISC approach offers, compared with VAX, many fewer cycles per instruction but somewhat more instructions per program.Using results from a software monitor on the MIPS machine and a hardware monitor on the VAX, this paper shows that the resulting advantagein cgcles per program ranges from slightly under a factor of 2 to almost a factor of 4, with a geometric mean of 2,7.It also demonstrates the correlation between cycles per instruction and relative instruction count.Various reasons for this correlation, and for the consistent net advantage of RISC, are discussed. | 1990 | VAX Vector ArchitectureabstractThe VAX Architecture has been extended to include an integrated, register-based vector processor. This extension allows both high-end and low-end implementations and can be supported with only small changes by VAX/VMS and VAX/ULTRIX operating systems. The extension is effectively exploited by the new vectorizing capabilities of VAX FORTRAN. Features of the VAX Vector Architecture and the design decisions which make it a consistent extension of the VAX Architecture are discussed. Dileep Bhandarkar, Richard Brunner

Some Performance Issues in Multiprocessor System DesignabstractAnalytic and simulation models of memory interference have been reported in the literature. These models provide tools for analyzing various system architecture alternatives. Some of the design parameters are processor speed, memory speed, number of processors, number of memories, use of cache memories, high-order versus low-order interleaving, and memory allocation. This correspondence applies existing analytic and simulation models to the multiprocessor design space and presents guidelines for the multiprocessor system architect. Preferred design alternatives and tradeoffs are outlined. Dileep Bhandarkar

Analysis of Memory Interference in MultiprocessorsabstractThis paper presents Markov chain models for analyzing the extent of memory interference in multiprocessor systems with a crosspoint switch for processor-memory communication. Processor behavior is simplified to an ordered sequence of a memory request followed by a certain amount of processing time. The results predicted by the model are compared with some simulation results and some actual measurements on C.mmp, a multiprocessor system being built at Carnegie-Mellon University. | 1975 | On the Performance of Magnetic Bubble Memories in Computer SystemsabstractThis correspondence describes simple queueing models for a magnetic bubble memory chip organization. Some of the unique features of bubble memories are outlined. The performance improvement due to bidirectional shifting is modeled as a function of program locality. Dileep Bhandarkar

Markov Chain Models for Analyzing Memory Interference in Multiprocessor Computer SystemsabstractThis paper discusses various analytical techniques for studying the extent of memory interference in a multiprocessor system with a crosspoint switch for processor-memory communication. Processor behavior is simplified to an ordered sequence of a memory request followed by an interval of processing time. The system is assumed to be bus bound; in other words, by the time the processor-memory bus completes servicing a processor's request the processor is ready to initiate another request and the memory module is ready to accept another request. The techniques discussed include discrete and continuous time Markov chain models as well as several approximate analytic methods. Dileep Bhandarkar, Samuel H. Fuller
