| 2022 | Removing Power Amplifier Distortions at the Receiver using Deep LearningabstractIn this paper, the novel idea of removing power amplifier distortions at the receiver using deep learning is proposed. First, a neural network is trained by using the data from the input and output of the power amplifier to mimic the behavior of the power amplifier. Once the model is trained, its parameters are frozen and it is then cascaded with another neural network for the power amplifier distortion removal. The entire block is then trained where the target vector of the training is the perfect signal that should be produced by the real power amplifier. Once the training has been completed, the second part of the neural network is separated and used for removing the power amplifier distortions. Simulation results are performed using an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system to validate the proposed idea. AM/AM, AM/PM characteristics and constellation diagrams are presented to show that the proposed deep learning method is capable of removing the distortions that are caused by the power amplifier at the transmitter. | 2021 | Frequency-Domain Signal Processing for Spectrally-Enhanced CP-OFDM Waveforms in 5G New RadioabstractOrthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected as the basis for the fifth-generation new radio (5G NR) waveform developments. However, effective signal processing tools are needed for enhancing the OFDM spectrum in various advanced transmission scenarios. In earlier work, we have shown that fast-convolution (FC) processing is a very flexible and efficient tool for filtered-OFDM signal generation and receiver-side subband filtering, e.g., for the mixed-numerology scenarios of the 5G NR. FC filtering approximates linear convolution through effective fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based circular convolutions using partly overlapping processing blocks. However, with the continuous overlap-and-save and overlap-and-add processing models with fixed block-size and fixed overlap, the FC-processing blocks cannot be aligned with all OFDM symbols of a transmission frame. Furthermore, 5G NR numerology does not allow to use transform lengths shorter than 128 because this would lead to non-integer cyclic prefix (CP) lengths. In this article, we present new FC-processing schemes which solve or avoid the mentioned limitations. These schemes are based on dynamically adjusting the overlap periods and extrapolating the CP samples, which make it possible to align the FC blocks with each OFDM symbol, even in case of variable CP lengths. This reduces complexity and latency, e.g., in mini-slot transmissions and, as an example, allows to use 16-point transforms in case of a 12-subcarrier-wide subband allocation, greatly reducing the implementation complexity. On the receiver side, the proposed scheme makes it possible to effectively combine cascaded inverse and forward FFT units in FC-filtered OFDM processing. Transform decomposition is used to simplify these computations, leading to significantly reduced implementation complexity in various transmission scenarios. A very extensive set of numerical results is also provided, in terms of the radio-link performance and associated processing complexity. | 2018 | 5G new radio uplink performance: Noise, interference and emission constraintsabstractThis paper investigates the 5G new radio (NR) uplink (UL) performance with CP-OFDM and DFT-s-OFDM based waveforms. The effects of highly non-linear PA behavior, inter-allocation interference, and UL multi-user MIMO on the relative performance of these waveforms are addressed. It is shown that with relaxed EVM and inband emission requirements for CP-OFDM, the coverage limited operation can be improved to achieve better link budget than DFT-s-OFDM based UL without performance penalty in the multi-user uplink. For high-throughput user equipment, the assumed highly non-linear PA behavior restricts the CP-OFDM based transmit power, which may limit the coverage compared to DFT-s-OFDM based waveform in UL without multi-user MIMO support. In UL multi-user MIMO scenario the CP-OFDM based waveform provides clearly better link performance and achieves better link budget than DFT-s-OFDM based waveform. Within the multi-user MIMO UL scenario, the requirement for substantially better PA linearity in high-throughput cases is also observed. | 2018 | 5G new radio and LTE uplink coexistenceabstractBy the introduction of the fifth generation (5G) mobile communication networks and its physical layer entitled as new radio (NR), the question of link performance in coexistence scenario between the 5G NR and fourth generation (4G) mobile communication networks based on long term evolution (LTE) has been raised. In this paper, we evaluate the uplink (UL) performance of 5G NR and LTE links operating within a common channel. The need for subcarrier shift in 5G NR UL similar to LTE UL is addressed and analyzed, and the effect of guard band (GB) in frequency domain between 5G NR and LTE is studied. It is shown that with a single physical resource block GB no subcarrier shifting is required in 5G NR, as long as the power control accuracy is sufficient, in which case LTE performance is unaffected. From the 5G NR performance point of view no GB is required. Toni Levanen, Karri Ranta-Aho, Jorma Kaikkonen, Sari Nielsen, Kari Pajukoski, Markku Renfors, Mikko Valkama |

| 2018 | Positioning of high-speed trains using 5G new radio synchronization signalsabstractWe study positioning of high-speed trains in 5G new radio (NR) networks by utilizing specific NR synchronization signals. The studies are based on simulations with 3GPP-specified radio channel models including path loss, shadowing and fast fading effects. The considered positioning approach exploits measurement of Time-Of-Arrival (TOA) and Angle-Of-Departure (AOD), which are estimated from beamformed NR synchronization signals. Based on the given measurements and the assumed train movement model, the train position is tracked by using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF), which is able to handle the non-linear relationship between the TOA and AOD measurements, and the estimated train position parameters. It is shown that in the considered scenario the TOA measurements are able to achieve better accuracy compared to the AOD measurements. However, as shown by the results, the best tracking performance is achieved, when both of the measurements are considered. In this case, a very high, sub-meter, tracking accuracy can be achieved for most (>75%) of the tracking time, thus achieving the positioning accuracy requirements envisioned for the 5G NR. The pursued high-accuracy and high-availability positioning technology is considered to be in a key role in several envisioned HST use cases, such as mission-critical autonomous train systems. | 2017 | 5G New Radio UL Coverage with Peak ClippingabstractFor the 5G new radio physical layer the CP-OFDM waveform has been chosen as the baseline for communications below 40 GHz. The requirement for multicarrier waveforms used for uplink is to achieve similar coverage as achieved by SC-FDMA in LTE uplink. In this paper, multiple candidate waveforms with enhanced CP-OFDM processing proposed for 5G incorporating realistic 3GPP compliant power amplifier model and peak clipping are evaluated in uplink transmission, and compared against SC-FDMA in terms of maximum average power amplifier output power and coded block error rate. It is shown that multicarrier waveforms have minor disadvantage in single-PRB transmission, but as the allocation size increases to encounter frequency selective fading the multicarrier waveforms provide similar or even improved link budget compared to SC-FDMA uplink. This implies that given the expected cell edge throughput requirements for 5G mobile broadband services and expected power amplifier development, enhanced CP-OFDM waveforms can achieve the uplink coverage requirement. | 2017 | Cost of Increased Bandwidth Efficiency in 5G NRabstractIn this paper, subband filtered CP-OFDM and windowed CP-OFDM waveforms proposed for 5G new radio (NR) are compared to LTE-like downlink and uplink waveforms under different power amplifier (PA) models. The effects of subband filtering or windowing are evaluated in terms of out-of-band and inband emissions, average error vector magnitude (EVM) and maximum uplink PA output power when increasing the bandwidth efficiency from 90% to 97.2%. The evaluations include recently proposed PA models by 3GPP TSG-RAN WG1 for downlink and uplink. It is shown that the cost of increased bandwidth efficiency in fullband downlink transmission is mainly complexity increase required by the steeper channelization filter. On the other hand, the increased EVM caused by channel filter induced inter-symbol-interference may limit the usability of modulation 256-QAM and above. In uplink with fullband transmission using 64-QAM modulation, the spectral containment is not an issue because the required backoff with highly non-linear PA model limits the Tx power to a very low level independently of the maximum allocation size. In the 1 PRB uplink, increased bandwidth utilization decreases the maximum PA output power while increased backoff improves the inband ACLR. | 2017 | Efficient Fast-Convolution-Based Waveform Processing for 5G Physical LayerabstractThis paper investigates the application of fast-convolution (FC) filtering schemes for flexible and effective waveform generation and processing in the fifth generation (5G) systems. FC-based filtering is presented as a generic multimode waveform processing engine while, following the progress of 5G new radio standardization in the Third-Generation Partnership Project, the main focus is on efficient generation and processing of subband-filtered cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) signals. First, a matrix model for analyzing FC filter processing responses is presented and used for designing optimized multiplexing of filtered groups of CP-OFDM physical resource blocks (PRBs) in a spectrally well-localized manner, i.e., with narrow guardbands. Subband filtering is able to suppress interference leakage between adjacent subbands, thus supporting independent waveform parametrization and different numerologies for different groups of PRBs, as well as asynchronous multiuser operation in uplink. These are central ingredients in the 5G waveform developments, particularly at sub-6-GHz bands. The FC filter optimization criterion is passband error vector magnitude minimization subject to a given subband band-limitation constraint. Optimized designs with different guardband widths, PRB group sizes, and essential design parameters are compared in terms of interference levels and implementation complexity. Finally, extensive coded 5G radio link simulation results are presented to compare the proposed approach with other subband-filtered CP-OFDM schemes and time-domain windowing methods, considering cases with different numerologies or asynchronous transmissions in adjacent subbands. Also the feasibility of using independent transmitter and receiver processing for CP-OFDM spectrum control is demonstrated Juha Yli-Kaakinen, Toni Levanen, Sami Valkonen, Kari Pajukoski, Juho Pirskanen, Markku Renfors, Mikko Valkama |

| 2016 | Reference sequence design for zero-tail DFT-spread-OFDMabstractZero-tail Discrete Fourier Transform-spread OFDM (ZT DFT-s-OFDM) modulation replaces the Cyclic Prefix (CP) with a low power tail whose length can be dynamically configured to cope with the instantaneous delay spread of the channel. In this paper, we discuss the reference sequence design for ZT DFT-s-OFDM. Our proposed approach is based on a deliberate distortion of the known Zadoff-Chu (ZC) sequences aiming at adapting them to the ZT DFT-s-OFDM waveform while preserving their attractive properties. A numerical analysis confirms the validity of our design in generating ZT DFT-s-OFDM reference sequences with zero autocorrelation, limited cross-correlation, flat frequency response and low Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR). | 2015 | On the Waveforms for 5G Mobile Broadband CommunicationsabstractTo realize the vision of ubiquitous mobile broadband where radio access performance should not be a limiting factor for user experience, we need to access very large bandwidths, and thus consider higher frequency bands up to the millimeter wave region. Air interface design, including waveforms, is a very important component for the success of 5G mobile broadband (MBB) in terms of flexibility, energy efficiency and cost efficiency. In this paper, we compare two waveforms, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and filter bank multicarrier (FBMC), in terms of these requirements. We show that OFDM is a suitable waveform for MBB due to reasonably low overhead, low cost and latency; whereas FBMC loses its spectral properties when non-linear power amplifier is used. | 2014 | On the Potential of Zero-Tail DFT-Spread-OFDM in 5G NetworksabstractZero-tail Discrete Fourier Transform -spread OFDM (ZT DFT-s-OFDM) modulation allows to dynamically cope with the delay spread of the multipath channel, thus avoiding the limitations of hard-coded Cyclic Prefix (CP). In this paper, we discuss the potential of ZT DFT-s-OFDM modulation for the envisioned 5th generation (5G) radio access technology, characterized by an ultra-dense deployment of small cells and the support of novel paradigms such as Device-to-Device (D2D). We address the benefits of ZT DFT-s-OFDM in terms of coexistence among devices operating over adjacent frequency chunks, possibility of adopting unified radio numerology among different cells, reduced latency and support of agile link direction switching. | 2014 | An Efficient Rank Adaptation Algorithm for Cellular MIMO Systems with IRC ReceiversabstractMultiple transmit and receive antennas introduce additional degrees of freedom, which can be used to increase the number of spatial channels between a transmitter-receiver pair. Alternately, the additional degrees of freedom can be used to improve the interference resilience property with the help of linear interference rejection combining (IRC) receivers. Typically, rank adaptation algorithms are aimed at balancing the trade-off between increasing the spatial gain, and improving the interference resilience property. In this paper, we propose an efficient and computationally effective rank adaptation algorithm based on an estimate of the mean signal-to-interference-plus- noise ratio (SINR) at an IRC receiver; wherein, we use results from random matrix theory to derive the expression for the mean post-IRC SINR in the presence of interferers with unequal powers. The performance of the proposed algorithm is analysed through system level simulations. The results are found to be comparable to the optimum performance, and match closely to that of a more complex existing rank adaptation method. Nurul Huda Mahmood, Gilberto Berardinelli, Fernando M. | 2013 | Full duplex relaying for local areaabstractWe consider full-duplex multi-hop forwarding in a Beyond 4G local area network. In the network, there is a high density of self-backhauling relay nodes that simultaneously act as access points towards the users, in addition to few nodes with wired backhaul. The access is framed and synchronized along the multi-hop flow, and the nodes apply time division duplexing. Interference cancelation as well as power optimization is performed within the multihop route. Simulations are carried out in a local area network consisting of multiple multi-floor buildings. The propagation channel is modelled using static pathloss, log-normal distributed random variable, or static pathloss with Rayleigh fading. The simulation results indicate that full-duplex relaying improves the network performance over half-duplex relaying, if self-interference channel attenuation is kept over 80 dB. The means of achieving tolerable self-interference levels in full-duplexing relays via physical design of the relay, and analog and digital interference cancellation are discussed. | 2010 | SVD-Based vs. Release 8 Codebooks for Single User MIMO LTE-A UplinkabstractThe ambitious data rate target of the Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) systems, which are currently being standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), can only be achieved by using advanced Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) antenna techniques on both uplink and downlink. In this paper, the focus is on LTE-A uplink and we discuss the suitability of two options for the closed loop precoded MIMO transmission. The first option is to use the same codebook of precoding matrices defined for LTE downlink, while the second option exploits the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the channel matrix, which could theoretically achieve the MIMO capacity. Qualitative benefits of both solutions are discussed. Link level simulation results show that, the SVD-based approach only lead to a poor performance gain in terms of spectral efficiency over the LTE downlink codebook because of the losses due to the quantization of the right singular vectors of the channel matrix. Since SVD-based solution doesn't even exploit some useful properties (e.g., power balance over the antennas) which LTE Release 8 codebook offers, the latter results to be a better candidate for the closed loop MIMO transmission in LTE-A uplink. | 2010 | Link Parameters Bundling across Multiple Component Carriers in LTE-A UplinkabstractA multiple component carrier (CC) solution has been agreed as the underlying structure of the Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) systems, which are currently being standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). In this deployment, the bundling of Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) and Hybrid Automatic Repeat Request (HARQ) parameters across multiple CCs is foreseen to maintain the feedback signaling comparable with the one of the previous LTE Release 8. This paper focuses on the transmission over multiple CCs in LTE-A Uplink. Issues related to the bundling of the link level parameters is discussed and a simple Codeword (CW) mixing strategy is proposed to boost the spectral efficiency performance while keeping low feedback overhead. Results show that, combined HARQ/MCS bundling can achieve the same performance of HARQ only bundling when used together with our proposed CW mixing strategy, with the advantage of a lower feedback overhead. CW mixing also leads to similar spectral efficiency when the bundling is performed over 2 and 3 CCs. The use of a turbo Successive Interference Cancellation (turbo SIC) receiver further improves the spectral efficiency, especially when antenna gain imbalance (AGI) occurs. | 2009 | Turbo Receivers for Single User MIMO LTE-A UplinkabstractThe paper deals with turbo detection techniques for Single User Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (SU MIMO) antenna schemes. The context is on the uplink of the upcoming Long Term Evolution - Advanced (LTE-A) systems. Iterative approaches based on Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) and Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) are investigated, and a low-complexity solution allowing to combine interstream interference cancellation and noise enhancement reduction is proposed. Performance is evaluated for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Single Carrier Frequency Division Multiplexing (SC-FDM) as candidate uplink modulation schemes for LTE-A. Simulation results show that, in a 2times2 antenna configuration, the turbo processing allows a consistent improvement of the link performance, being SC-FDM the one having higher relative gain with respect to linear detection. The turbo receiver's impact is however much reduced for both modulation schemes in a 2times4 configuration, due to the higher diversity gain provided by the additional receive antennas. | 2009 | Precoded multirank transmission with linear receivers for LTE-A UplinkabstractThe 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) defined the requirements for the upcoming long term evolution advanced (LTE-A) systems, aiming at peak spectral efficiencies of 30 bit/s/Hz in the downlink and 15 bits/s/Hz in the uplink. These ambitious targets can be accomplished only by using advanced multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna techniques. In this paper, we evaluate closed loop precoded multirank transmission for single carrier frequency division multiplexing (SC-FDM) as selected uplink modulation scheme by using the precoding codebook defined for LTE downlink. Its performance is compared with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Results show that OFDM outperforms SC-FDM for medium-high ranks, but the gap can be reduced by adding further diversity branches. While narrowband precoding shows considerable gain over open loop transmission for all ranks, wideband precoding works with a very small feedback overhead but results to be a valid option mainly for low-rank transmission, where the low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of SC-FDM signals is also preserved. | 2006 | UTRAN Long Term Evolution in 3GPPabstractThe 3rdGeneration Partner Ship Project (3GPP) produced the first version of WCDMA standard in the end of 1999, which is the basis of the Universal Mobile Telephone System (UMTS) deployed in the field today. This release, called release 99, contained all the basic elements to meet the requirements for IMT-2000 technologies. Release 5 introduced the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) in 2002, enabling now more realistic 2 Mbps and even beyond with data rates up to 14 Mbps. Further Release 6 followed with high speed uplink packet access (HSUPA) in end of 2004, with market introduction expected in 2007. Alongside with on-going further WCDMA development, work on evolved universal terrestrial radio access (UTRA) has been initiated in 3GPP. The objective of evolved UTRA is to develop a framework for the evolution of the 3GPP radio-access technology towards wider bandwidth, lower latency and packet-optimized radio-access technology with peak data rate capability up to 100 Mbps. | 2004 | Autocorrelation-based blind spreading-factor detection for CDMAabstractSpreading factor (SF) in code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems depends on the data rate of the user, and is, therefore, unknown a priori for a communication receiver. In this letter, the blind SF-detection problem in an additive white Gaussian noise channel is studied, and a novel one-step autocorrelation-based SF detector is proposed. Three decision rules are derived to find simple and robust SF detectors for practical communication receivers. Performance of the detectors is studied and compared with the optimal detector via Monte Carlo computer simulations. The autocorrelation-based SF detector appears to give performance close to the optimal detector, assuming perfect knowledge of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). It is also found to be significantly more robust to SNR estimation errors than the optimal detector. Markku Juntti, Alberto Rabbachin, Kari Pajukoski |
