2022 HotCluster: A Thermal-Aware Defect Recovery Method for Through-Silicon-Vias Toward Reliable 3-D ICs Systems
abstract
Through silicon via (TSV) is considered as the near-future solution to realize low-power and high-performance 3D-integrated circuits (3D-ICs) and 3D-Network-on-Chips (3D-NoCs). However, the lifetime reliability issue of TSV due to its fault sensitivity and the high operating temperature of 3D-ICs, which also accelerates the fault rate, is one of the most critical challenges. Meanwhile, most current works focus on detecting and correcting TSV defects after manufacturing without considering high-temperature nodes’ impact on lifetime reliability. Besides, the recovery for defective clusters is also challenging because of costly redundancies. In this work, we presentHotCluster: a hotspot-aware self-correction platform for clustering defects in 3D-NoCs to help understand and tackle this problem. We first give a method to predict normalized fault rates and place redundant TSV groups according to each region’s fault rate. In our particular medium fault rate (normalized to the coolest area),HotClusterreduces about 60% of the redundancies in comparison to the uniformly distributed redundancies while having a higher ratio of router working in a normal state. Furthermore,HotClusterintegrates both online (weight based) and offline (max-flow min-cut offline method) mapping algorithms to help the system correct the faulty TSV clusters. The experimental results show that both the max-flow min-cut offline method and weight-based online mode with a redundancy of 0.25 exhibits less than 1% of routers disabled under 50% defect rates.

2020 TSV-OCT: A Scalable Online Multiple-TSV Defects Localization for Real-Time 3-D-IC Systems
abstract
In order to detect and localize through-silicon-via (TSV) failures in both manufacturing and operating phases, most of the existing methods use a dedicated testing mechanism with long response time and prerequisite interruptions for online testing. This article presents an error correction code (ECC)-based method named “TSV on-communication test” (TSV-OCT) to detect and localize faults without halting the operation of TSV-based 3-D-IC systems. We first propose a statistical detector, a method to detect open and short defects in TSVs that work in parallel with data transactions. Second, we propose an isolation-and-check algorithm to enhance the localization ability of the method. Moreover, the Monte Carlo simulations show that the proposed statistical detector increases ×2 the number of detected faults when compared to conventional ECC-based techniques. With the help of isolation and check, TSV-OCT localizes the number of defects up to ×4 and ×5 higher. In addition, the response time is kept below 65000 cycles, which could be easily integrated into real-time applications. On the other hand, an implementation of TSV-OCT on a 3-D Network-on-Chip (NoC) router shows no performance degradation for testing while having a reasonable area overhead.

2019 A Wideband High Efficiency Ka-Band MMIC Power Amplifier for 5G Wireless Communications
abstract
A compact wideband Ka-band monolithic microwave/ millimeter-wave integrated circuit (MMIC) power amplifier (PA) is demonstrated using a 0.15-μm pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistor (pHEMT) Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) process. The proposed harmonic load-pull and radial stub matching technique have been employed to achieve wideband and high-efficiency performance. The fabricated PA exhibits a measured output power of 24 dBm, gain of 20 dB and 35% power added efficiency (PAE). The PA has a wideband performance in which the power maintains higher than 23 dBm, and the PAE is higher than 30% over a wide frequency range from 25 to 34 GHz.

2017 AES Datapath Optimization Strategies for Low-Power Low-Energy Multisecurity-Level Internet-of-Things Applications
abstract
Connected devices are getting attention because of the lack of security mechanisms in current Internet-of-Thing (IoT) products. The security can be enhanced by using standardized and proven-secure block ciphers as advanced encryption standard (AES) for data encryption and authentication. However, these security functions take a large amount of processing power and power/energy consumption. In this paper, we present our hardware optimization strategies for AES for high-speed ultralow-power ultralow-energy IoT applications with multiple levels of security. Our design supports multiple security levels through different key sizes, power and energy optimization for both datapath and key expansion. The estimated power results show that our implementation may achieve an energy per bit comparable with the lightweight standardized algorithm PRESENT of less than 1 pJ/b at 10 MHz at 0.6 V with throughput of 28 Mb/s in ST FDSOI 28-nm technology. In terms of security evaluation, our proposed datapath, 32-b key out of 128 b cannot be revealed by correlation power analysis attack using less than 20 000 traces.

2017 A Comprehensive Reliability Assessment of Fault-Resilient Network-on-Chip Using Analytical Model
abstract
The component's failure in network-on-chips (NoCs) has been a critical factor on the system's reliability. In order to alleviate the impact of faults, fault tolerance has been investigated in the recent years to enhance NoC's robustness. Due to the vast selection of fault-tolerance mechanisms and critical design constraints, selecting and configuring an appropriate mechanism to satisfy the fault-tolerance requirements constitute new challenges for designers. Consequently, reliability assessment has become prominent for the early stages of manufacturing process to solve these problems. This paper approaches the fault-tolerance analysis by providing an analytical model to approximate the lifetime reliability and compares it with a system-level simulation. Based on the proposed approach, we measure the fault-tolerance efficiency using a new parameter, named reliability acceleration factor. The goal of this paper is to provide an efficient and accurate reliability assessment to help designers easily understand and evaluate the advantages and drawbacks of their potential fault-tolerance methods.

2014 An efficient hardware architecture for inter-prediction in H.264/AVC encoders
abstract
In this paper, we propose a design methodology for the inter-prediction in H.264/AVC codecs by addressing the relationship between its main processes. The target of this methodology is to optimize the design in order to get better performance while keeping a reasonable design cost. An efficient hardware architecture for the inter-prediction in H.264/AVC codecs is then proposed with three key techniques: a modified full search algorithm with bandwidth efficiency, pipelining technique, and data reuse strategy. With this approach, the inter-prediction has been successfully designed and implemented with a CMOS 180nm technology which provides low cost in terms of latency, hardware overhead and memory bandwidth. The design is initially targeted to CIF video format; however, it is obviously suitable for real-time HD 1080p video format.

2014 FIFO-level-based power management and its application to an H.264 encoder
abstract
Dynamic Power Management and Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling have been investigated during the last decades to reduce the power consumption of electronic circuits and systems. This paper proposes a new implementation of dynamic frequency scaling to manage the power consumption based on the occupancy level of a FIFO in a communication link between two components. Based on control theory, the method is simple and application independent. The PI controller proposed here was first tested in the MAT LAB environment and then designed using VHDL. Simulations in the MATLAB environment and in ModelSim have allowed the validation of the control technique proposed. Being synthesized in technology FD-SOI 28nm using RC synthesis tool from Cadence, the control method presents only 10.8% of Silicon area overhead with 1.6% of power consumption reduction. This preliminary result is appealing because it has been obtained without voltage scaling that will improve the power gain even more.

2011 Cost-efficient 130nm TSMC Forward Transform and Quantization for H.264/AVC encoders
abstract
In this paper, we present a low cost Forward Transform and Quantization (FTQ) implementation for H.264/AVC encoders in mobile applications. To reduce the hardware implementation overhead, the proposed design uses only one unified architecture of 1-D transform engine to perform all required transform processes, including discrete cosine transform and Walsh Hadamard transform. This design also enables to share the common parts among multipliers that have the same multiplicands. The performance of the design is taken into consideration and improved by using a fast architecture of the multiplier in the quantizer, the most critical component in the design. Experimental results show that our architecture can completely finish transform and quantization processes for a 4:2:0 macroblock in 228 clock cycles and the achieved throughput is 445Msamples/s at 250MHz operating frequency while the area overhead is very small, 147755μm2(approximate 15KGates), with the 130nm TSMC CMOS technology.

2007 Implementation of a Design-for-Test Architecture for Asynchronous Networks-on-Chip
abstract
In order to improve the testability of asynchronous NoCs, we have developed a design-for-test (DfT) architecture. In this architecture, each asynchronous network node is surrounded by an asynchronous test wrapper and the network communication channels are reused to establish high throughput TAMs. A special block, the generator-analyzer-controller (GAC) unit, has also been developed to generate test vectors, to control test flows, and to analyze the test results. This unit can be implemented on-chip or off-chip (in our experiments, it has been implemented off-chip). The operation of the test wrappers is controlled by a dedicated 2-bit configuration channel. Thanks to its scalability and versatility, the proposed architecture can be configured to adapt to any NoC topology and to any specific application.

2006 A DFT Architecture for Asynchronous Networks-on-Chip
abstract
The Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) paradigm is emerging as a solution for the communication of SoCs. Many NoC architecture propositions are presented but few works on testing these network architectures. To test the SoCs, the main challenge is to reach into the embedded cores (i.e, the IPs). In this case, the DFT techniques that integrate test architectures into the SoCs to ease the test of these SoCs are really favoured. In this paper, we present a new methodology for testing NoC architectures. A modular, generic, scalable and configurable DFT architecture is developed in order to ease the test of NoC architectures. The target of this test architecture is asynchronous NoC architectures that are implemented in GALS systems. The proposed architecture is therefore named ANoC-TEST and is implemented in QDI asynchronous circuits. In addition, this architecture can be used to test the computing resources of the networked SoCs. Some initial results and conclusions are also given.
