2023 GAN-LM: Generative Adversarial Network using Language Models for Downstream Applications
abstract
In this work, we investigate Data Augmentation methods to improve the performance of state-of-the-art models for four different downstream tasks.Specifically, we propose Generative Adversarial Network using Language Models (GAN-LM) approach that combines a deep generative model with a pre-trained language model to produce diverse augmentations. We compare the GAN-LM to various conventional methods in non-contextual-and contextuallevels on four public datasets: ZESHEL for zero-shot entity linking, TREC for question classification, STS-B for sentence pairs semantic textual similarity (STS), and mSTS for multilingual sentence pairs STS.Additionally, we subsample these datasets to study the impact of such augmentations in low-resource settings where limited amounts of training data is available.Compared to the state-of-the-art methods in downstream tasks, we mostly achieve the best performance using GAN-LM approach. Finally, we investigate the way of combining the GAN-LM with other augmentation methods to complement our proposed approach. The developed code for reproducibility is included in the supplementary material.1

2018 A Three-Layered Mutually Reinforced Model for Personalized Citation Recommendation
abstract
Fast-growing scientific papers pose the problem of rapidly and accurately finding a list of reference papers for a given manuscript. Citation recommendation is an indispensable technique to overcome this obstacle. In this paper, we propose a citation recommendation approach via mutual reinforcement on a three-layered graph, in which each paper, author or venue is represented as a vertex in the paper layer, author layer, and venue layer, respectively. For personalized recommendation, we initiate the random walk separately for each query researcher. However, this has a high computational complexity due to the large graph size. To solve this problem, we apply a three-layered interactive clustering approach to cluster related vertices in the graph. Personalized citation recommendations are then made on the subgraph, generated by the clusters associated with each researcher's needs. When evaluated on the ACL anthology network, DBLP, and CiteSeer ML data sets, the performance of our proposed model-based citation recommendation approach is comparable with that of other state-of-the-art citation recommendation approaches. The results also demonstrate that the personalized recommendation approach is more effective than the nonpersonalized recommendation approach.

2016 Information Ordering with an Event-Enriched Vector Space Model for Multi-Document News Summarization
abstract
Information ordering is a nontrivial task in multi‐document summarization (MDS), which typically relies on the traditional vector space model (VSM) notorious for semantic deficiency. In this article, we propose a novel event‐enriched VSM to alleviate the problem by building event semantics into sentence representations. The mediation of event information between sentence and term, especially in the news domain, has an intuitive appeal as well as technical advantage in common sentence‐level operations such as sentence similarity computation. Inspired by the block‐style writing by humans, we base the sentence ordering algorithm on sentence clustering. To accommodate the complexity introduced by event information, we adopt a soft‐to‐hard clustering strategy on the event and sentence levels, using expectation–maximization clustering and K ‐means, respectively. For the purpose of cluster‐based sentence ordering, the event‐enriched VSM enables us to design an ordering algorithm to enhance event coherence computed between sentence and sentence–context pairs. Drawing on the findings of earlier research, we also incorporate topic continuity measures and time information into the scheme. We evaluate the performance of the model and its variants automatically and manually, with experimental results showing clear advantage of the event‐based model over baseline and non‐event‐based models in information ordering for multi‐document news summarization. We are confident that the event‐enriched VSM has even greater potential in summarization and beyond, which awaits further research. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

2014 Recognizing Humor on Twitter
abstract
In this paper, we present our work of humor recognition on Twitter, which will facilitate affect and sentimental analysis in the social network. The central question of what makes a tweet (Twitter post) humorous drives us to design humor-related features, which are derived from influential humor theories, linguistic norms, and affective dimensions. Using machine learning techniques, we are able to recognize humorous tweets with high accuracy and F-measure. More importantly, we single out features that contribute to distinguishing non-humorous tweets from humorous tweets, and humorous tweets from other short humorous texts (non-tweets). This proves that humorous tweets possess discernible characteristics that are neither found in plain tweets nor in humorous non-tweets. We believe our novel findings will inform and inspire the burgeoning field of computational humor research in the social media.

2014 Sequential Summarization: A Full View of Twitter Trending Topics
abstract
As an information delivering platform, Twitter collects millions of tweets every day. However, some users, especially new users, often find it difficult to understand trending topics in Twitter when confronting the overwhelming and unorganized tweets. Existing work has attempted to provide a short snippet to explain a topic, but this only provides limited benefits and cannot satisfy the users' expectations. In this paper, we propose a new summarization task, namely sequential summarization, which aims to provide a serial of chronologically ordered short sub-summaries for a trending topic in order to provide a complete story about the development of the topic while retaining the order of information presentation. Different from the traditional summarization task, the numbers of sub-summaries for different topics are not fixed. Two approaches, i.e., stream-based and semantic-based approaches, are developed to detect the important subtopics within a trending topic. Then a short sub-summary is generated for each subtopic. In addition, we propose three new measures to evaluate the position-aware coverage, sequential novelty and sequence correlation of the system-generated summaries. The experimental results based on the proposed evaluation criteria have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

2013 Automatic Twitter Topic Summarization With Speech Acts
abstract
With the growth of the social media service of Twitter, automatic summarization of Twitter messages (tweets) is in urgent need for efficient processing of the massive tweeted information. Unlike multi-document summarization in general, Twitter topic summarization must handle the numerous, short, dissimilar, and noisy nature of tweets. To address this challenge, we propose a novel speech act-guided summarization approach in this work. Speech acts characterize tweeters' communicative behavior and provide an organized view of their messages. Speech act recognition is a multi-class classification problem, which we solve by using word-based and symbol-based features that capture both the linguistic features of speech acts and the particularities of Twitter text. The recognized speech acts in tweets are then used to direct the extraction of key words and phrases to fill in templates designed for speech acts. Leveraging high-ranking words and phrases as well as topic information for major speech acts, we propose a round-robin algorithm to generate template-based summaries. Different from the extractive method adopted in most previous works, our summarization method is abstractive. Evaluated on two 100-topic datasets, the summaries generated by our method outperform two kinds of representative extractive summaries and rival human-written summaries in terms of explanatoriness and informativeness.

2012 Generating Coherent Summaries with Textual Aspects
abstract
Initiated by TAC 2010, aspect-guided summaries not only address specific user need, but also ameliorate content-level coherence by using aspect information. This paper presents a full-fledged system composed of three modules: finding sentence-level textual aspects, modeling aspect-based coherence with an HMM model, and selecting and ordering sentences with aspect information to generate coherent summaries. The evaluation results on the TAC 2011 datasets show the superiority of aspect-guided summaries in terms of both information coverage and textual coherence.

2012 Twitter hyperlink recommendation with user-tweet-hyperlink three-way clustering
abstract
Twitter, the most famous micro-blogging service and online social network, collects millions of tweets every day. Due to the length limitation, users usually need to explore other ways to enrich the content of their tweets. Some studies have provided findings to suggest that users can benefit from added hyperlinks in tweets. In this paper, we focus on the hyperlinks in Twitter and propose a new application, called hyperlink recommendation in Twitter. We expect that the recommended hyperlinks can be used to enrich the information of user tweets. A three-way tensor is used to model the user-tweet-hyperlink collaborative relations. Two tensor-based clustering approaches, tensor decomposition-based clustering (TDC) and tensor approximation-based clustering (TAC) are developed to group the users, tweets and hyperlinks with similar interests, or similar contexts. Recommendation is then made based on the reconstructed tensor using cluster information. The evaluation results in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE) shows the advantages of both the TDC and TAC approaches over a baseline recommendation approach, i.e., memory-based collaborative filtering. Comparatively, the TAC approach achieves better performance than the TDC approach.
