2023 Audio-Driven Talking Face Video Generation With Dynamic Convolution Kernels
abstract
In this paper, we present a dynamic convolution kernel (DCK) strategy for convolutional neural networks. Using a fully convolutional network with the proposed DCKs, high-quality talking-face video can be generated from multi-modal sources (i.e., unmatched audio and video) in real time, and our trained model is robust to different identities, head postures, and input audios. Our proposed DCKs are specially designed for audio-driven talking face video generation, leading to a simple yet effective end-to-end system. We also provide a theoretical analysis to interpret why DCKs work. Experimental results show that our method can generate high-quality talking-face video with background at 60 fps. Comparison and evaluation between our method and the state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of our method.

2023 Predicting Personalized Head Movement From Short Video and Speech Signal
abstract
Audio-driven talking face video generation has attracted much attention recently. However, few existing works pay attention to machine learning of talking head movement, especially based on the phonetic study. Observing that real-world talking faces often accompany natural head movement, in this paper, we model the relation between speech signal and talking head movement, which is a typical one-to-many mapping problem. To solve this problem, we propose a novel two-step mapping strategy: (1) in the first step, we train an encoder that predicts a head motion behavior pattern (modeled as a feature vector) from the head motion sequence of a short video of 10–15 seconds, and (2) in the second step, we train a decoder that predict a unique head motion sequence from both the motion behavior pattern and the auditory features of an arbitrary speech signal. Based on the proposed mapping strategy, we build a deep neural network model that takes a speech signal of a source person and a short video of a target person as input, and outputs a synthesized high-fidelity talking face video with personalized head pose. Extensive experiments and a user study show that our method can generate high-quality personalized head movement in synthesized talking face videos, and meanwhile, has comparable facial animation quality (e.g., lip synchronization and expression) with the state-of-the-art methods.

2012 An optimization approach for extracting and encoding consistent maps in a shape collection
abstract
We introduce a novel approach for computing high quality point-to-point maps among a collection of related shapes. The proposed approach takes as input a sparse set of imperfect initial maps between pairs of shapes and builds a compact data structure which implicitly encodes an improved set of maps between all pairs of shapes. These maps align well with point correspondences selected from initial maps; they map neighboring points to neighboring points; and they provide cycle-consistency, so that map compositions along cycles approximate the identity map. The proposed approach is motivated by the fact that a complete set of maps between all pairs of shapes that admits nearly perfect cycle-consistency are highly redundant and can be represented by compositions of maps through a single base shape. In general, multiple base shapes are needed to adequately cover a diverse collection. Our algorithm sequentially extracts such a small collection of base shapes and creates correspondences from each of these base shapes to all other shapes. These correspondences are found by global optimization on candidate correspondences obtained by diffusing initial maps. These are then used to create a compact graphical data structure from which globally optimal cycle-consistent maps can be extracted using simple graph algorithms. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show that the proposed approach yields significantly better results than state-of-the-art data-driven shape matching methods.

2011 Global contrast based salient region detection
abstract
Automatic estimation of salient object regions across images, without any prior assumption or knowledge of the contents of the corresponding scenes, enhances many computer vision and computer graphics applications. We introduce a regional contrast based salient object detection algorithm, which simultaneously evaluates global contrast differences and spatial weighted coherence scores. The proposed algorithm is simple, efficient, naturally multi-scale, and produces full-resolution, high-quality saliency maps. These saliency maps are further used to initialize a novel iterative version of GrabCut, namely SaliencyCut, for high quality unsupervised salient object segmentation. We extensively evaluated our algorithm using traditional salient object detection datasets, as well as a more challenging Internet image dataset. Our experimental results demonstrate that our algorithm consistently outperforms 15 existing salient object detection and segmentation methods, yielding higher precision and better recall rates. We also show that our algorithm can be used to efficiently extract salient object masks from Internet images, enabling effective sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) via simple shape comparisons. Despite such noisy internet images, where the saliency regions are ambiguous, our saliency guided image retrieval achieves a superior retrieval rate compared with state-of-the-art SBIR methods, and additionally provides important target object region information.

2011 Connectedness of Random Walk Segmentation
abstract
Connectedness of random walk segmentation is examined, and novel properties are discovered, by considering electrical circuits equivalent to random walks. A theoretical analysis shows that earlier conclusions concerning connectedness of random walk segmentation results are incorrect, and counterexamples are demonstrated.

2009 A Shape-Preserving Approach to Image Resizing
abstract
Abstract We present a novel image resizing method which attempts to ensure that important local regions undergo a geometric similarity transformation, and at the same time, to preserve image edge structure. To accomplish this, we define handles to describe both local regions and image edges, and assign a weight for each handle based on an importance map for the source image. Inspired by conformal energy, which is widely used in geometry processing, we construct a novel quadratic distortion energy to measure the shape distortion for each handle. The resizing result is obtained by minimizing the weighted sum of the quadratic distortion energies of all handles. Compared to previous methods, our method allows distortion to be diffused better in all directions, and important image edges are well‐preserved. The method is efficient, and offers a closed form solution.
