| 2022 | Mediascape XR: A Cultural Heritage Experience in Social VRabstractSocial virtual reality (VR) allows multiple remote users to interact in a shared space, unveiling new possibilities for communication in immersive environments. Mediascape XR presents a social VR experience that teleports 3D representations of remote users, using volumetric video, to a virtual museum. It enables visitors to interact with cultural heritage artifacts while allowing social interactions in real time between them. The application is designed following a human-centered approach, enabling an interactive, educating, and entertaining experience. | 2021 | Self-assessment and Monitoring of CHI Performance in Digital TransformationabstractAbstract To fully reap the benefits of digitisation and sustainably create value for their audiences, cultural heritage institutions (CHI) need to implement and monitor digital, data-driven strategies that touch upon all aspects of how organisations operate. This can range from staffing and skills development to adoption of metadata models, novel audience engagement approaches and methods for collecting and using user data. We introduce the concept for the CHI Self-Assessment Tool that enables institutions to assess their strategy and plan against several aspects of digital transformation. The tool proposes a novel approach on how CHIs can continuously gather data on their activities and use insights from this data to adjust their strategies and increase their digital maturity. Equally, this data can be used by policy-makers to implement more effective policies and support the sector with targeted capacity building. Rasa Bocyte, Johan Oomen, Frederik Truyen |

| 2020 | Content Adaptation, Personalisation and Fine-grained Retrieval: Applying AI to Support Engagement with and Reuse of Archival Content at ScaleabstractRecent technological advances in the distribution of audiovisual content have opened up many opportunities for media archives to fulfil their outward-facing ambitions and easily reach large audiences with their content. This paper reports on the initial results of the ReTV research project that aims to develop novel approaches for the reuse of audiovisual collections. It addresses the reuse of archival collections from three perspectives: content holders (broadcasters and media archives) who want to adapt audiovisual content for distribution on social media, end-users who have switched from linear television to online platforms to consume audiovisual content and creatives in the media industry who seek audiovisual content that could be used in new productions. The paper presents three uses cases that demonstrate how AI-based video analysis technologies can facilitate these reuse scenarios through video content adaptation, personalisation and fine-grained retrieval. | 2015 | PATCH 2015: Personalized Access to Cultural HeritageabstractSince 2007, the PATCH workshop series (https://patchworkshopseries.wordpress.com/) have been gathering successfully researchers and professionals from various countries and institutions to discuss the topics of digital access to cultural heritage and specifically the personalization aspects in this process. Due to this rich history, the reach of the PATCH workshop in various research communities is extensive. Liliana Ardissono, Cristina Gena, Lora Aroyo, Tsvi Kuflik, Alan J. | 2013 | Waisda?: video labeling gameabstractThe Waisda? video labeling game is a crowsourcing tool to collect user-generated metadata for video clips. It follows the paradigm of games-with-a-purpose, where two or more users play against each other by entering tags that describe the content of the video. Players score points by entering the same tags as one of the other players. As a result each video that is played in the game is annotated with tags that are anchored to a time point in the video. Waisda? has been deployed in two projects with videos from Dutch broadcasters. With the open source version of Waisda? crowdsourcing of video annotation becomes available for any online video collection. | 2012 | Personalized access to cultural heritage: multimedia by the crowd, for the crowdabstractThe primary goal of this workshop is to gather researchers and practitioners from different fields, e.g., multimedia retrieval, user interaction, arts and heritage curation, interface design and user modeling, in order to showcase novel applications and discuss opportunities that grow from the connections between users and multimedia systems in the cultural heritage domain. | 2011 | Personalized access to cultural heritage (PATCH 2011)abstractThis workshop focuses on the specific challenges for personalization in the cultural heritage setting from the point of view of user interaction and visitor experience. It investigates how the user interface - the contact point of visitors and systems - can become more intelligent by means of personalization. Overall, the workshop aims at attracting presentations of novel ideas for addressing these challenges and the current state of the art in this field. | 2011 | Hacking history via event extractionabstractWithin cultural heritage collections, objects are often grounded in a particular historical setting. This setting can currently not be made explicit, as structured descriptions of events are either missing or not marked up explicitly. This paper reports a study on automatic extraction of an historical event thesaurus from unstructured texts. We show how this preliminary thesaurus accommodates event- and object-driven search and browsing of two cultural heritage collections. | 2010 | Crowdsourcing rock n' roll multimedia retrievalabstractIn this technical demonstration, we showcase a multimedia search engine that facilitates semantic access to archival rock n' roll concert video. The key novelty is the crowdsourcing mechanism, which relies on online users to improve, extend, and share, automatically detected results in video fragments using an advanced timeline-based video player. The user-feedback serves as valuable input to further improve automated multimedia retrieval results, such as automatically detected concepts and automatically transcribed interviews. The search engine has been operational online to harvest valuable feedback from rock n' roll enthusiasts. Cees Snoek, Bauke Freiburg, Johan Oomen, Roeland Ordelman |
