Parallel Coordinate Descent Newton Method for Efficient L1 -Regularized Loss MinimizationabstractThe recent years have witnessed advances in parallel algorithms for large-scale optimization problems. Notwithstanding the demonstrated success, existing algorithms that parallelize over features are usually limited by divergence issues under high parallelism or require data preprocessing to alleviate these problems. In this paper, we propose a Parallel Coordinate Descent algorithm using approximate Newton steps (PCDN) that is guaranteed to converge globally without data preprocessing. The key component of the PCDN algorithm is the high-dimensional line search, which guarantees the global convergence with high parallelism. The PCDN algorithm randomly partitions the feature set into b subsets/bundles of size P, and sequentially processes each bundle by first computing the descent directions for each feature in parallel and then conducting P-dimensional line search to compute the step size. We show that: 1) the PCDN algorithm is guaranteed to converge globally despite increasing parallelism and 2) the PCDN algorithm converges to the specified accuracy ϵ within the limited iteration number of Tϵ, and Tϵdecreases with increasing parallelism. In addition, the data transfer and synchronization cost of the P-dimensional line search can be minimized by maintaining intermediate quantities. For concreteness, the proposed PCDN algorithm is applied to L1-regularized logistic regression and L1-regularized L2-loss support vector machine problems. Experimental evaluations on seven benchmark data sets show that the PCDN algorithm exploits parallelism well and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. | 2014 | Sufficient Statistics Feature Mapping over Deep Boltzmann Machine for DetectionabstractAs an important and fundamental methodology in the fields of pattern recognition and image processing, learning middle level feature has attracted increasing interest during the recent years, where generative feature mapping has shown highly completive performance in diverse applications. In this paper, a middle level feature representation is proposed based on Deep Boltzmann Machine (DBM) and sufficient statistics (SS) feature mapping for detection. In the approach, DBM is employed to model data distribution and the hidden information inferred by DBM together with other informative variables are then exploited by SS to form the middle level features. The features, learnt from data, can be fed to standard classifiers for classification. In order to evaluate the performance of our method, we apply our feature mapping method to two challenging tasks: (1) contour detection through distinguishing border and non-border pixels, (2) sales pipeline prediction, which predicts the winning propensity of the ongoing sales opportunity in the pipeline. In comparison with other leading methods in the literature on the Berkeley Segmentation Dataset and Sales Pipeline Database (SPDB), our proposed algorithm performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods in terms of effectiveness and efficiency. | 2013 | Discriminative Generative Contour DetectionabstractContour detection is an important and fundamental problem in computer vision which finds numerous applications.Despite significant progress has been made in the past decades, contour detection from natural images remains a challenging task due to the difficulty of clearly distinguishing between edges of objects and surrounding backgrounds. To address this problem, we first capture multi-scale features from pixel-level to segmentlevel using local and global information. These features are mapped to a space where discriminative information is captured by computing posterior divergence of Gaussian mixture models and then used to train a random forest classifier for contour detection. We evaluate the proposed algorithm against leading methods in the literature on the Berkeley segmentation and Weizmann horse data sets.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed contour detection algorithm performs favorably against state-of-the-art methods in terms of speed and accuracy. | 2013 | Multiple Subcategories Parts-Based Representation for One Sample Face IdentificationabstractSmall sample set, occlusion, and illumination variations are the critical obstacles for a face identification system towards practical application. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic generative model for parts-based data representation to address these difficulties. In our approach, multiple subcategories corresponding to the individual face parts, such as nose, mouth, eye, and so forth, are modeled within a probabilistic graphical model framework to mimic the process of generating a face image. The induced face representation, therefore, encodes rich discriminative information. Model training is totally unsupervised. Once the training is completed, a test sample from the face class can be recognized as a novel combination of learned parts. In summary, the main contributions of this work are threefold: 1) A novel hierarchical probabilistic generative model is proposed, which is capable of achieving an efficient parts-based representation for robust face identification. 2) A constrained variational EM algorithm is developed to learn the model parameters and infer the variables. 3) Two similarity metrics are specially designed for the novel parts-based feature representation, which are effective for matching score guided one sample face identification. The models and similarity metrics are validated on three face databases. Experimental results demonstrate the capabilities of the model to deal with small sample set, occlusions, and illumination variances. Xu Zhao 0001, Xiong Li 0004, Yun Fu 0001, Yuncai Liu

Hybrid generative-discriminative recognition of human action in 3D joint spaceabstractWe propose a novel human action recognition method based on the generative feature mapping over 3D human body joint sequences. The proposed method relies on Hidden Markov Model (HMM), but differs from the previous methods in the way of incorporating HMM and discriminative classifier, aiming to capture more discriminative information. Firstly, we use HMMs to model the joint sequences of human body. Then the Posterior Divergence is used to build feature mappings from the trained HMMs. The derived feature mappings map a variable-length joint sequence to a fixed-dimension feature vector which will be delivered to SVM for classification. We evaluate the proposed method and related methods on a large number of 3D joint sequences. The experimental results show its competitive performance, in comparison with other state-of-the-art methods. Xiong Li 0004, Xu Zhao 0001, Yuncai Liu

Hybrid generative-discriminative classification using posterior divergenceabstractIntegrating generative models and discriminative models in a hybrid scheme has shown some success in recognition tasks. In such scheme, generative models are used to derive feature maps for outputting a set of fixed length features that are used by discriminative models to perform classification. In this paper, we present a method, called posterior divergence, to derive feature maps from the log likelihood function implied in the incremental expectation-maximization algorithm. These feature maps evaluate a sample in three complementary measures: (1) how much the sample affects the model; (2) how well the sample fits the model; (3) how uncertain the fit is. We prove that the linear classification error rate using the outputs of the derived feature maps is at least as low as that of plug-in estimation. We present efficient algorithms for computing these feature maps for semi-supervised learning and supervised learning. We evaluate the proposed method on three typical applications, i.e. scene recognition, face and non-face classification and protein sequence analysis, and demonstrate improvements over related methods. | 2011 | A Double-Layer Model for Foreground Detection from Video SequenceabstractThis paper proposes a method for background modeling and foreground detection in video. This method divides the background into two layers, the dynamic layer and the static layer. An energy descriptor is proposed to analysis the motion state in dynamic layer while a grid filter is proposed to reduce the negative impact of sudden illumination change such as light switching off. Experiment results compared with four typical algorithms show that this method outperforms others in most challenging videos including sudden illumination change and some complex backgrounds. | 2010 | Bimodal gender recognition from face and fingerprintabstractThis paper focuses on multimodal gender recognition. To achieve a robust and discriminative performance for gender recognition, visual observations from both face and corresponding fingerprints are fused to serve for the task. The bag-of-words model is employed to structure the image representation. We propose a novel supervised method to construct the visual words, by which the redundant feature dimensions are discarded and the important dimensions for gender classification are highlighted. The dimension rearrangement is achieved by aligning the feature dimensions to a common normal vector of the hyperplane between categories. The Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) model is extended to incorporate discriminative clues for supervised classification. We build the novel Discriminative LDA (D-LDA) model by maximizing the inter-class margins, which can significantly enhance the discriminative power of the whole model. Experiments on a large face and fingerprint database demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed new feature and model. Complementary advantages benefited from face-fingerprint fusion to a robust gender recognition framework also get validated. Xiong Li 0004, Xu Zhao 0001, Yun Fu 0001, Yuncai Liu

Multimodality gender estimation using Bayesian hierarchical modelabstractWe propose to estimate human gender from corresponding fingerprint and face information with the Bayesian hierarchical model. Different from previous works on fingerprint based gender estimation with specially designed features, our method extends to use general local image features. Furthermore, a novel word representation called latent word is designed to work with the Bayesian hierarchical model. The feature representation is embedded to our multimodality model, within which the information from fingerprint and face is fused at the decision level for gender estimation. Experiments on our internal database show the promising performance. Xiong Li 0004, Xu Zhao 0001, Huanxi Liu, Yun Fu 0001, Yuncai Liu

| 2010 | Monocular 3D Tracking of Deformable Surfaces Using Linear ProgrammingabstractWe present a method for 3D shape reconstruction of inextensible deformable surfaces from monocular image sequences. The key of our approach is to represent the surface as 3D triangulated mesh and formulate the reconstruction problem as a sequence of Linear Programming (LP) problems which can be effectively solved. The LP problem consists of data constraints which are 3D-to-2D keypoint correspondences and shape constraints which prevent large changes of the edge orientation between consecutive frames. Furthermore, we use a refined bisection algorithm to accelerate the computing speed. The robustness and efficiency of our approach are validated on both synthetic and real data. | 2010 | Learning parts-based representation for face transitionabstractThis paper proposes to learn parts-based face representation from real face samples and then applies it to face transition. It differs from previous works in two aspects. First, we learn flexible face decomposition from real faces unsupervisedly instead of designing face template manually, for which two simple priors are embedded into learning procedure through constrained EM formulation. Second, both face representation and transition are derived from an unified probabilistic framework. Based on the learned face representation, the face distance measurement could be defined, which enables us to synthesize face via specifying distance with respect to reference faces and depict the full transition trace of two or more given faces with distinct age, gender and race.
