| 2025 | Turbocharging Vector Databases using Modern SSDsabstractEfficient and scalable vector search is critical for modern AI applications, particularly in retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and large-scale semantic search. However, disk-based vector databases often suffer from significant I/O bottlenecks due to suboptimal cache hit ratios and inefficient use of modern SSD architectures. In this work, we introduce a suite of optimizations to enhance the performance of disk-resident Approximate Nearest Neighbor (ANN) indices, specifically focusing on hierarchical graph-based indexing such as HNSW. Our approach leverages three key strategies: (1) Parallel I/O leveraging io_uring to exploit SSD concurrency and reduce retrieval latency, (2) Spatially-aware insertion reordering to improve cache efficiency by dynamically adjusting insert execution order based on locality, and (3) Locality-preserving colocation to restructure index layouts and minimize costly random disk accesses. We implement these techniques within pgvector, a PostgreSQL extension for vector search, and conduct extensive evaluations using real-world datasets. Our optimizations yield up to 11.1× improvement in query throughput, a 3.23× increase in cache hit ratio, and a 98.4% reduction in index build time. Moreover, our findings underscore the importance of SSD-aware indexing strategies for scalable vector retrieval. By integrating hardware-aware I/O optimizations with intelligent data placement techniques, this work paves the way for more efficient, high-performance disk-based vector search engines that could fully leverage modern SSD's high parallelism. | 2013 | Automated Transformation of Template-Based Web Applications into Single-Page ApplicationsabstractIn a template-based web application (TWA), a template is used as a common structure or layout to dynamically generate web pages. The consistent structure helps users easily obtain information. However, TWAs still have an interaction problem: whenever a user clicks a hyperlink or submits a form, a new page is loaded. Therefore, we need to reduce communication between a browser and a server by avoiding loading the same template twice. This paper proposes a technique of transforming a Java-based TWA into a single-page application (SPA) with partial page refreshes. An Eclipse plugin is also presented for automatic reengineering of TWAs. Our technique is applied to typical TWAs and discussed with respect to quality attributes such as performance, bookmarkability, and backward navigation. | 2001 | Gated clock routing for low-power microprocessor designabstractThis paper presents a zero-skew gated clock routing technique for VLSI circuits. Gated clock trees include masking gates at the internal nodes of the clock tree, which are selectively turned on and off by the gate control signals during the active and idle times of the circuit modules to reduce the switched capacitance of the clock tree. We construct a clock-tree topology based on the locations and the activation frequencies of the modules, while the locations of the internal nodes of the clock tree (and, hence, the masking gates) are determined using a dynamic programming approach followed by a gate reduction heuristic. This work assumes that the gates are turned on/off by a centralized controller. Therefore, the additional power and routing area incurred by the controller and the gate control signal routing are examined. Various tradeoffs between power and area for different design options and module activities are discussed and detailed experimental results are presented. Finally, good design practices for implementing the gated clocks are suggested. Jaewon Oh, Massoud Pedram |

| 2000 | Pareto-based soft real-time task scheduling in multiprocessor systemsabstractWe develop a new method to map (i.e. allocate and schedule) real-time applications into certain multiprocessor systems. Its objectives are: the minimization of the number of processors used; and the minimization of the deadline missing time. Given a parallel program with real time constraints and a multiprocessor system, our method finds schedules of the program in the system which satisfy all the real time constraints with minimum number of processors. The minimization is carried out through a Pareto-based genetic algorithm which independently considers the both goals, because they are non-commensurable criteria. Experimental results show that our scheduling algorithm achieved better performance than previous ones. The advantage of our method is that the algorithm produces not a single solution but a family of solutions known as the Pareto-optimal set, out of which designers can select optimal solutions appropriate for their environmental conditions. | 1998 | Power Reduction in Microprocessor Chips by Gated Clock RoutingabstractThis paper presents a zero-skew gated clock routing technique for VLSI circuits. The gated clock tree has masking gates at the internal nodes of the clock tree, which are selectively turned on and off by the gate control signals during the active and idle times of the circuit modules to reduce switched capacitance of the clock tree. The clock tree topology is constructed based on the locations and the activation frequencies of the modules and whereas the locations of the internal nodes of the clock tree (and hence the masking gates) are determined using a dynamic programming approach followed by a gate reduction heuristic. | 1998 | Multi-Pad Power/Ground Network Design for Uniform Distribution of Ground BounceabstractThis paper presents a method for power and ground (p/g) network routing for high speed CMOS chips with multiple p/g pads. Our objective is not to reduce the total amount of the ground bounce, but to distribute it more evenly among the pads while the routing area is kept to a minimum. We first show that proper p/g terminal to pad assignment is necessary to reduce the maximum ground bounce and then present a heuristic for performing simultaneous assignment and p/g net routing. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. 1. Jaewon Oh, Massoud Pedram |

| 1998 | Gated Clock Routing Minimizing the Switched CapacitanceabstractThis paper presents a zero-skew gated clock routing technique for VLSI circuits. The gated clock tree has masking gates at the internal nodes of the clock tree, which are selectively turned on and off by the gate control signals during the active and idle times of the circuit modules to reduce switched capacitance of the clock tree. This work extends our previous work so as to account for the switched capacitance and the area of the gate control signal routing. Various tradeoffs between power and area for different design options and module activities are discussed and detailed experimental results are presented. Jaewon Oh, Massoud Pedram |
