Automatically Creating Adaptive Video Summaries Using Constraint Satisfaction Programming: Application to Sport ContentabstractThis paper addresses automatic video summarization. We propose a novel approach that relies on constraint satisfaction programming (CSP). An expert defines the general rules for summary generation. These rules are written as constraints. The (final) user can define additional constraints or enter high-level parameters of predefined constraints. This has many advantages. It clearly separates summary generation rules from the summary generation algorithm (the CSP solver here). The summary can hence be modified without reviewing the whole generation process. It also allows users to adapt the summary to the target application and to their preferences. The proposed approach is mainly dedicated to edited professional video (like TV programs). It has been extensively evaluated not only using objective measures but also through a large-scale user evaluation. This evaluation involved more than 60 people. Experiments have been performed within the challenging application of tennis match automatic summarization, using about 28.5 h of videos. Haykel Boukadida, Sid-Ahmed Berrani, Patrick Gros

Constraint Satisfaction Programming for Video SummarizationabstractThis paper addresses the problem of automatic video summarization. The proposed solution relies on constraint satisfaction programming (CSP). Summary generation rules are expressed as constraints and the summary is created using the CSP solver given the input video, its audio-visual features and possibly user parameters (like the desired duration). The solution clearly separates production rules from the generation algorithm, which in practice allows users to easily express their constraints and preferences and also to modify them w.r.t. the target application. The solution is extensively evaluated in the context of tennis match summarization. Sid-Ahmed Berrani, Haykel Boukadida, Patrick Gros

BABAZ: A large scale audio search system for video copy detectionabstractThis paper presents BABAZ, an audio search system to search modified segments in large databases of music or video tracks. It is based on an efficient audio feature matching system which exploits the reciprocal nearest neighbors to produce a per-match similarity score. Temporal consistency is taken into account based on the audio matches, and boundary estimation allows the precise localization of the matching segments. The method is mainly intended for video retrieval based on their audio track, as typically evaluated in the copy detection task of TRECVID evaluation campaigns. The evaluation conducted on music retrieval shows that our system is comparable to a reference audio fingerprinting system for music retrieval, and significantly outperforms it on audio-based video retrieval, as shown by our experiments conducted on the dataset used in the copy detection task of TRECVID'2010 campaign. | 2012 | Multimodal information fusion and temporal integration for violence detection in moviesabstractThis paper presents a violent shots detection system that studies several methods for introducing temporal and multimodal information in the framework. It also investigates different kinds of Bayesian network structure learning algorithms for modelling these problems. The system is trained and tested using the MediaEval 2011 Affect Task corpus, which comprises of 15 Hollywood movies. It is experimentally shown that both multimodality and temporality add interesting information into the system. Moreover, the analysis of the links between the variables of the resulting graphs yields important observations about the quality of the structure learning algorithms. Overall, our best system achieved 50% false alarms and 3% missed detection, which is among the best submissions in the MediaEval campaign. | 2012 | Hamming embedding similarity-based image classificationabstractIn this paper, we propose a novel image classification framework based on patch matching. More precisely, we adapt the Hamming Embedding technique, first introduced for image search to improve the bag-of-words representation. This matching technique allows the fast comparison of descriptors based on their binary signatures, which refines the matching rule based on visual words and thereby limits the quantization error. Then, in order to allow the use of efficient and suitable linear kernel-based SVM classification, we propose a mapping method to cast the scores output by the Hamming Embedding matching technique into a proper similarity space. Comparative experiments of our proposed approach and other existing encoding methods on two challenging datasets PASCAL VOC 2007 and Caltech-256, report the interest of the proposed scheme, which outperforms all methods based on patch matching and even provide competitive results compared with the state-of-the-art coding techniques. | 2011 | Asymmetric hamming embedding: taking the best of our bits for large scale image searchabstractThis paper proposes an asymmetric Hamming Embedding scheme for large scale image search based on local descriptors. The comparison of two descriptors relies on an vector-to-binary code comparison, which limits the quantization error associated with the query compared with the original Hamming Embedding method. The approach is used in combination with an inverted file structure that offers high efficiency, comparable to that of a regular bag-of-features retrieval system. The comparison is performed on two popular datasets. Our method consistently improves the search quality over the symmetric version. The trade-off between memory usage and precision is evaluated, showing that the method is especially useful for short binary signatures. Mihir Jain, Hervé Jégou, Patrick Gros

Query adaptative locality sensitive hashingabstractIt is well known that high-dimensional nearest-neighbor retrieval is very expensive. Many signal processing methods suffer from this computing cost. Dramatic performance gains can be obtained by using approximate search, such as the popular Locality-Sensitive Hashing. This paper improves LSH by performing an on-line selection of the most appropriate hash functions from a pool of functions. An additional improvement originates from the use of E& lattices for geometric hashing instead of one-dimensional random projections. A performance study based on state-of-the-art high-dimensional descriptors computed on real images shows that our improvements to LSH greatly reduce the search complexity for a given level of accuracy. | 2008 | Structure learning in a Bayesian network-based video indexing frameworkabstractSeveral stochastic models provide an effective framework to identify the temporal structure of audiovisual data. Most of them need as input a first video structure, i.e. connections between features and video events. Provided that this structure is given as input, the parameters are then estimated from training data. Bayesian networks offer an additional feature, namely structure learning, which allows the automatic construction of the model structure from training data. Structure learning obviously leads to an increased generality of the model building process. This paper investigates the trade-off between the increase of generality and the quality of the results in video analysis. We model video data using dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) where the static part of the network accounts for the correlations between low-level features extracted from the raw data and between these features and the events considered. It is precisely this part of the network whose structure is automatically constructed from training data. Experimental results on a commercial detection case study application show that, even though the model structure is determined in a non supervised manner, the resulting model is effective for the detection of commercial segments in video data. | 2006 | 3D Navigation based on a Visual MemoryabstractThis paper addresses the design of a control law for vision-based robot navigation. The method proposed is based on a topological representation of the environment. Within this context, a learning stage enables a graph to be built in which nodes represent views acquired by the camera, and edges denote the possibility for the robotic system to move from one image to an other. A path finding algorithm then gives the robot a collection of views describing the environment it has to go through in order to reach its desired position. This article focuses on the control law used for controlling the robot motion's online. The particularity of this control law is that it does not require any reconstruction of the environment, and does not force the robot to converge towards each intermediary position in the path. Landmarks matched between each consecutive views of the path are considered as successive features that the camera has to observe within its field of view. An original visual servoing control law, using specific features, ensures that the robot navigates within the visibility path. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach Anthony Remazeilles, François Chaumette, Patrick Gros

Score oriented Viterbi search in sport video structuring using HMM and segment modelsabstractA key question in video indexing is the effective use of all the possible sources of information. Hidden Markov models (HMM) and segment models (SM) provide powerful frameworks for audiovisual integration and structure knowledge encoding. However, incorporating punctual symbolic information, such as inlaid score labels, with these models is not straightforward. We demonstrate that using the score labels as an additional feature is not efficient and propose a novel algorithm to efficiently incorporate the score information in the Viterbi decoding process. This score oriented Viterbi search guarantees an optimal solution consistent with the available score information. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method and its robustness to inlaid score detection errors Manolis Delakis, Guillaume Gravier, Patrick Gros

Multimodal Segmental-Based Modeling of Tennis Video BroadcastsabstractEfficient multimodal fusion is a key feature of future video indexing systems. Hidden Markov models provide a powerful framework for video structure analysis but they require all video modalities to be strictly synchronous. Taking as a case study tennis broadcasts analysis, we introduce into video indexing segment models, a generalization of hidden Markov Models, where the fusion of different modalities can be performed with relaxed synchrony constraints. Segment models were experimentally proved to perform marginally better compared to hidden Markov models Manolis Delakis, Guillaume Gravier, Patrick Gros

Robot Motion Control from a Visual MemoryabstractThis article presents a new approach for robot motion control, using images acquired by an on-board camera. A particularity of this method is that it can avoid reconstructing the entire scene without limiting the displacements possible. To achieve this, an image base of the environment is used to describe the navigation space. We extract from this base a sequence of overlapping images which define the zone that the robot must traverse, in order to reach the desired position. Motions are computed on-line using only points of interest extracted from these images. A method based on potential field theory has been adapted in order to ensure a sufficient visibility of these features during the entire motion of the robot. Experimental results obtained on a six degrees of freedom robotic system are presented and confirm the validity of our approach. Anthony Remazeilles, François Chaumette, Patrick Gros

Approximate searches: k-neighbors + precisionabstractIt is known that all multi-dimensional index structures fail to accelerate content-based similarity searches when the feature vectors describing images are high-dimensional. It is possible to circumvent this problem by relying on approximate search-schemes trading-off result quality for reduced query execution time. Most approximate schemes, however, provide none or only complex control on the precision of the searches, especially when retrieving the k nearest neighbors (NNs) of query points. In contrast, this paper describes an approximate search scheme for high-dimensional databases where the precision of the search can be probabilistically controlled when retrieving the k NNs of query points. It allows a fine and intuitive control over this precision by setting at run time the maximum probability for a vector that would be in the exact answer set to be missed in the approximate set of answers eventually returned. This paper also presents a performance study of the implementation using real datasets showing its reliability and efficiency. It shows, for example, that our method is 6.72 times faster than the sequential scan when it handles more than 5 106 24-dimensional vectors, even when the probability of missing one of the true nearest neighbors is below 0.01. | 2003 | Hierarchical structure analysis of sport videos using HMMSabstractThis paper focuses on the use of hidden Markov models (HMMs) for structure analysis of sport videos. The video structure parsing relies on the analysis of the temporal interleaving of video shots, with respect to a priori information about video content and editing rules. The basic temporal unit is the video shot and visual features are used to characterize its type of view. Our approach is validated in the particular domain of tennis videos. As a result, typical tennis scenes are identified. In addition, each shot is assigned to a level in the hierarchy described in terms of point, game and set. Ewa Kijak, Lionel Oisel, Patrick Gros

Images Interpolation for Image-Based Control under Large DisplacementabstractThe principal deficiency of image-based visual servoing is that the induced (3D) trajectories are not optimal and sometimes, especially when the displacement to realize is large, these trajectories are not physically valid leading to the failure of the servoing process. Furthermore, visual control needs a matching step between the features extracted from the initial image and the desired one. This step can be problematic (or impossible) when the camera displacement between the acquisitions of the initial and desired images is large and/or for complex scenes. To resolve these deficiencies, we couple an image interpolation process between N relay images extracted from a database and an image-based trajectory tracking. The camera calibration and the model of the observed scene are not assumed to be known. The relay images are interpolated in such a way that the corresponding camera trajectory is minimal. First a closed form collineation path is obtained and then the analytical form of image features trajectories are derived and efficiently tracked using a purely image-based control. Experimental results obtained on a six DOF eye-in-hand robotic system are presented and confirm the validity of the proposed approach. | 2000 | Combining Local Recognition Methods for Better RecognitionabstractIn this paper we propose a comprehensive framework that allows existing local appearance methods to collaborate in order to overcome their mutual drawbacks. Our approach tends to use the best suited local descriptors for a recognition task, and is capable of combining evidence of different methods in the case where no clearly superior type of descriptor exists. We achieve this collaboration by locally matching geometric configurations and let each match contribute to the computation of the apparent motion between a model image and the unknown query image. We show in this paper that, if we have a set of local methods conforming to a small set of conditions, they can share information about evidence of objects in a scene. This shared evidence results in recognition performances that lie beyond the capacities of any of the currently used individual methods. Bart Lamiroy, Sylvaine Picard, Patrick Gros
