2024 An Intelligent Edge-IoT Platform With Deep Learning for Body Condition Scoring of Dairy Cow
abstract
Body condition score (BCS) of dairy cows is the direct reflection of their nutritional status. The timely estimation of BCS is beneficial to improving dairy cow health, milk production and reproduction. In this work, we propose an intelligent Edge-IoT platform with deep learning for estimating BCS of dairy cow, by integrating inference capability of deep learning and low latency of edge computing in IoT framework. Through capturing images of dairy cow’s back with the RGB-D camera, inference module deployed in the edge computing device firstly performs cow detection to localize the separate area of each dairy cow, and then performs individual identification and estimating BCS of dairy cows simultaneously. The existing systems are mainly commercial systems such as DeLaval and HerdVision, they use electronic ear tags with radio-frequency identification sensors for cow identification. Compared to existing systems, in the proposed platform, combined the finetuned YOLOv7 model and Avoid Repeated Inference (ARI) algorithm to detect dairy cow. An EfficientID model combined with metric learning is designed for cow identification, and an EfficientBCS model with Coordinate Attention (CA) is proposed for estimating BCS. The dairy cow’s identity (ID) and BCS are finally transmitted to the cloud analysis center. Experimental results show that the accuracy of estimating BCS reached 85% within 0.5 range error conducted on the test set collected in the dairy farm. The total inference time for one dairy cow is 3.138 seconds. Results show that the platform can be served as an excellent application of dairy cow body condition scoring.

2014 BigDataBench: A big data benchmark suite from internet services
abstract
As architecture, systems, and data management communities pay greater attention to innovative big data systems and architecture, the pressure of benchmarking and evaluating these systems rises. However, the complexity, diversity, frequently changed workloads, and rapid evolution of big data systems raise great challenges in big data benchmarking. Considering the broad use of big data systems, for the sake of fairness, big data benchmarks must include diversity of data and workloads, which is the prerequisite for evaluating big data systems and architecture. Most of the state-of-the-art big data benchmarking efforts target evaluating specific types of applications or system software stacks, and hence they are not qualified for serving the purposes mentioned above. This paper presents our joint research efforts on this issue with several industrial partners. Our big data benchmark suite-BigDataBench not only covers broad application scenarios, but also includes diverse and representative data sets. Currently, we choose 19 big data benchmarks from dimensions of application scenarios, operations/ algorithms, data types, data sources, software stacks, and application types, and they are comprehensive for fairly measuring and evaluating big data systems and architecture. BigDataBench is publicly available from the project home page http://prof.ict.ac.cn/BigDataBench. Also, we comprehensively characterize 19 big data workloads included in BigDataBench with varying data inputs. On a typical state-of-practice processor, Intel Xeon E5645, we have the following observations: First, in comparison with the traditional benchmarks: including PARSEC, HPCC, and SPECCPU, big data applications have very low operation intensity, which measures the ratio of the total number of instructions divided by the total byte number of memory accesses; Second, the volume of data input has non-negligible impact on micro-architecture characteristics, which may impose challenges for simulation-based big data architecture research; Last but not least, corroborating the observations in CloudSuite and DCBench (which use smaller data inputs), we find that the numbers of L1 instruction cache (L1I) misses per 1000 instructions (in short, MPKI) of the big data applications are higher than in the traditional benchmarks; also, we find that L3 caches are effective for the big data applications, corroborating the observation in DCBench.

2011 YSmart: Yet Another SQL-to-MapReduce Translator
abstract
MapReduce has become an effective approach to big data analytics in large cluster systems, where SQL-like queries play important roles to interface between users and systems. However, based on our Facebook daily operation results, certain types of queries are executed at an unacceptable low speed by Hive (a production SQL-to-MapReduce translator). In this paper, we demonstrate that existing SQL-to-MapReduce translators that operate in a one-operation-to-one-job mode and do not consider query correlations cannot generate high-performance MapReduce programs for certain queries, due to the mismatch between complex SQL structures and simple MapReduce framework. We propose and develop a system called Y Smart, a correlation aware SQL-to-MapReduce translator. Y Smart applies a set of rules to use the minimal number of MapReduce jobs to execute multiple correlated operations in a complex query. Y Smart can significantly reduce redundant computations, I/O operations and network transfers compared to existing translators. We have implemented Y Smart with intensive evaluation for complex queries on two Amazon EC2 clusters and one Facebook production cluster. The results show that Y Smart can outperform Hive and Pig, two widely used SQL-to-MapReduce translators, by more than four times for query execution.

2011 RCFile: A fast and space-efficient data placement structure in MapReduce-based warehouse systems
abstract
MapReduce-based data warehouse systems are playing important roles of supporting big data analytics to understand quickly the dynamics of user behavior trends and their needs in typical Web service providers and social network sites (e.g., Facebook). In such a system, the data placement structure is a critical factor that can affect the warehouse performance in a fundamental way. Based on our observations and analysis of Facebook production systems, we have characterized four requirements for the data placement structure: (1) fast data loading, (2) fast query processing, (3) highly efficient storage space utilization, and (4) strong adaptivity to highly dynamic workload patterns. We have examined three commonly accepted data placement structures in conventional databases, namely row-stores, column-stores, and hybrid-stores in the context of large data analysis using MapReduce. We show that they are not very suitable for big data processing in distributed systems. In this paper, we present a big data placement structure called RCFile (Record Columnar File) and its implementation in the Hadoop system. With intensive experiments, we show the effectiveness of RCFile in satisfying the four requirements. RCFile has been chosen in Facebook data warehouse system as the default option. It has also been adopted by Hive and Pig, the two most widely used data analysis systems developed in Facebook and Yahoo!
