| 2008 | Adaptive tracking of network behavioral signals for real time forensic analysis of service quality degradationabstractThe current shift from the static access based service model to the dynamic application based service model introduced major challenges for effective forensics of any quality degradation of the provided service. In addition, about 55 percent of the Tier 1 and Tier 2 providers are planning to offer managed security services to guarantee an attack free IP service. In this article, we propose a novel approach of modeling the network behavior in order to select meaningful metrics to be used in tracking the network behavior changes. Based on the deftly selected metrics, we utilize an adaptive exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) with a moving centerline control chart to monitor the changes of the network behavior. Signaling the network behavior changes in association with the service objective based network behavioral model should provide the required information for effective forensic of the service quality degradation. Our methodology is applied on both simulated and real traces of network behavioral metrics. We illustrate the effectiveness of the forensic analysis model for the selection of relevant behavioral metrics. As well, we show how the adaptive EWMA can be used for tracking the changes in the network behavior from normal to abnormal and vice versa. | 1995 | The future of information networks and distributed applicationsabstractInformation and telecommunications service are a critical and important component of the global economy; expertise in this domain gives a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. The guiding vision for information networks is a system which enables users to access all the information they need, when they need it, and where they need it. For this vision to become reality and revolutionize the way we conduct our daily lives and business, network technology, user accessibility and content handling tools must be developed in an integrated fashion. Operations and management functions must be developed and tested in order to achieve reliable operation of the infrastructure, manage the information appliances, and maintain quality of services along with the necessary privacy and security. Lack of a common user interface could turn the vision of an information services network into a catastrophic nightmare with users unable or unwilling to use new services and products. As a final point, if is clear that video will play a dominant role in most applications and will fuel the growth of a service market which includes entertainment, health care, education, commerce, and manufacturing.> Hanafy Meleis |

| 1995 | Removing the obstacles to network technology adoptionabstractThe obstacles to adopting new network technologies that enable new applications and services are reviewed and discussed. Technologies such as client-server and interconnection mechanisms enable the realization of new applications which are "nice to have." Making these new technologies as easy as possible to exploit and use is a key in adopting them. Obstacles such as cost and complexity of managing the changes have been proven to be two of the barriers to adopting these technologies. Additionally, ignoring the importance of the legacy systems and their associated applications services, and infrastructures as well as introducing a set of new technologies which may not work well with the older systems impedes the acceptance of these new technologies. A set of migration technologies and strategies must be developed to remove the obstacles and to accelerate the adoption of these new network technologies. Hanafy Meleis |

| 1988 | A bit-slice architecture for sigma-delta analog-to-digital convertersabstractThe sigma-delta analog-to-digital converters is based on filtering and undersampling by the digital section of the one-bit output stream coming from the modulation. The structure of this section, consisting of a sine cubic FIR filter decimator followed by an IIR decimator section, is discussed. It is shown that from both signal processing and hardware implementation viewpoints it is advantageous to have the decimation factor of the first stage as large as possible. A bit-slice implementation of the decimation stages is given. It can be easily expanded when higher bit resolutions are required.> Vladimir Friedman, Douglas M. Brinthaupt, De-Ping Chen, Timothy W. | 1985 | A novel architecture design for VLSI implementation of an FIR decimation filterabstractA novel architecture design of a one stage FIR filter for decimation is described. It performs the decimation of a 1-bit code at 1024KHz of double integration Sigma Delta modulation output to PCM at 16KHz. This architecture is designed in such a way that it needs only a simple control structure suitable for VLSI implementation. We devised an algorithm for generating the coefficients of the filter with a minimum of required hardware. It does not require storing the coefficients in a ROM and continuously reading it to calculate the convolution. The accumulators needed to perform the direct convolution are arranged in a way that simplifies and minimizes the hardware required for the filter implementation. The filter response is Sinc3(f) which provides sufficient attenuation for modulation generated by means of double integration. The implementation of this filter requires the generation of the coefficients and the performance of the convolution. Three coefficients are needed with every input to obtain the output sequence. The major feature of this architecture is the use of an efficient algorithm to obtain the coefficients thereby reducing the area and power consumption. It is very suitable for VLSI implementation in CMOS technology. Hanafy Meleis, Pierre Le Fur |
