| 2010 | Concatenated coded modulation techniques and orthogonal space-time block codes in the presence of fading channel estimation errorsabstractPerformance of coding and modulation systems in fading channels is usually analysed under the assumption that the receiver has perfect knowledge of channel condition. However, various shortcomings in practical channel estimation techniques lead to imperfections, resulting in channel estimation errors. The authors analyse a practical coding and modulation scheme for multiple-antenna systems considering channel estimation errors. The novelty of this study resides in providing error probability bounds for concatenated trellis coded modulation (TCM) or bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes with orthogonal space–time block codes (OSTBC) under imperfect channel estimation assumption. Moreover, our analytical results quantify the performance degradation associated with various levels of channel estimation error variance. The authors also show that if channel estimation quality does not improve sufficiently with SNR, there would be error floor in performance, such that the coded system could get outperformed by a system with differential signalling that requires no channel estimation. Simulation results are presented, which confirm the validity of the analytical results. Mehdi Teimouri, Nasser Rezaee, Ahmadreza Hedayat |

| 2009 | Error Probability Bounds of Concatenated Channel Codes and Differential Space-Time Block CodesabstractIn this letter, we analyze the performance of a class of multiple-antenna systems which concatenate channel codes, e.g., trellis coded modulation (TCM), and differential orthogonal space-time block codes (DOSTBC). Assuming no channel state information (CSI), tight performance bounds for bit and frame error rates are provided under block Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results are also provided which confirm the accuracy of analytical findings. Mehdi Teimouri, Nasser Rezaee, Ahmadreza Hedayat |

| 2007 | Rate allocation for serial concatenated convolutional codesabstractThe paper proposes an analytical method to solve the rate allocation problem in serial concatenated convolutional codes (SCCCs). The goal is to find the best rate allocation between the inner and the outer constituent convolutional codes of an SCCC for constant overall code rate, interleaver size and complexity. Simulation results are shown in the paper to demonstrate the optimum and superior design criteria. In addition, the ‘density evolution’ model is shown to verify the proposed rate allocation method, while indicating that a high rate inner code should not be used for SCCCs. Finally, it is also shown that the upper bounds on BER of ML decoded SCCCs do not provide good design criteria for allocating the rate in iteratively decoded SCCCs. Mehdi Teimouri, Nasser Rezaee |

| 2005 | Frame time-hopping patterns in multirate optical CDMA networks using conventional and multicode schemesabstractA class of generalized optical orthogonal codes (OOCs), namely, frame time-hopping (FTH) patterns with an extremely large cardinality, are studied for implementing multirate and multiservice (MR/MS) optical CDMA (OCDMA) networks. Conventional MR/MS methods, namely variable spreading rate and parallel mapping, are considered. Using FTH patterns, the problem of low OOC code cardinality in conventional MR/MS schemes is removed. Moreover, several new multicode methods, using subcode concatenation scheme, are proposed for MR/MS OCDMA. The proposed multicode schemes present flexibility for supporting MR/MS applications such as lower implementation complexity and cost, less need for service synchronization, and finally lower link power budget. Multiple-access performances of the systems are evaluated using saddle-point approximation methods considering photodetector shot-noise, dark current, and circuit thermal noise. The results show that the conventional parallel mapping outperforms the other schemes in high received powers, and the proposed multicode method, using Walsh subcode along with difference modulation, presents the best performance in low received powers for the cases considered. | 2004 | A case for dense-mode multicast support in MPLSabstractIn this paper, we propose a new method for dense-mode multicast support in an MPLS domain. Our method uses a unique identifying label for multicast distribution tree. It consumes no label from unicast label space. Label swapping is not required at all, since we use just one label for each multicast tree. This approach results in at least 50% memory savings in LSRs (label switch routers). In our previous method, the tree labels are assigned centrally in the MPLS domain. However, they are assigned in a partially distributed manner by LLAs (local label assigners) in the new scheme. Multicast label ranges are assigned to LLAs proportional to their needs. There is no need for explicit on-demand signaling in this approach. The proposed solution significantly reduces the control messages overhead in comparison with previous work. Mozafar Bag-Mohammadi, Siavash Samadian-Barzoki, M.
