2021 Bridging Towers of Multi-task Learning with a Gating Mechanism for Aspect-based Sentiment Analysis and Sequential Metaphor Identification
abstract
Multi-task learning (MTL) has been widely applied in Natural Language Processing. A major task and its associated auxiliary tasks share the same encoder; hence, an MTL encoder can learn the sharing abstract information between the major and auxiliary tasks. Task-specific towers are then employed upon the sharing encoder to learn task-specific information. Previous works demonstrated that exchanging information between task-specific towers yielded extra gains. This is known as soft-parameter sharing MTL. In this paper, we propose a novel gating mechanism for the bridging of MTL towers. Our method is evaluated based on aspect-based sentiment analysis and sequential metaphor identification tasks. The experiments demonstrate that our method can yield better performance than the baselines on both tasks. Based on the same Transformer backbone, we compare our gating mechanism with other information transformation mechanisms, e.g., cross-stitch, attention and vanilla gating. The experiments show that our method also surpasses these baselines.

2020 Improving Variational Autoencoder for Text Modelling with Timestep-Wise Regularisation
abstract
The Variational Autoencoder (VAE) is a popular and powerful model applied to text modelling to generate diverse sentences. However, an issue known as posterior collapse (or KL loss vanishing) happens when the VAE is used in text modelling, where the approximate posterior collapses to the prior, and the model will totally ignore the latent variables and be degraded to a plain language model during text generation.Such an issue is particularly prevalent when RNN-based VAE models are employed for text modelling. In this paper, we propose a simple, generic architecture called Timestep-Wise Regularisation VAE (TWR-VAE), which can effectively avoid posterior collapse and can be applied to any RNN-based VAE models. The effectiveness and versatility of our model are demonstrated in different tasks, including language modelling and dialogue response generation.

2020 DGST: a Dual-Generator Network for Text Style Transfer
abstract
We propose DGST, a novel and simple Dual-Generator network architecture for text Style Transfer. Our model employs two generators only, and does not rely on any discriminators or parallel corpus for training. Both quantitative and qualitative experiments on the Yelp and IMDb datasets show that our model gives competitive performance compared to several strong baselines with more complicated architecture designs.

2020 Latent Space Factorisation and Manipulation via Matrix Subspace Projection
abstract
We tackle the problem disentangling the latent space of an autoencoder in order to separate labelled attribute information from other characteristic information. This then allows us to change selected attributes while preserving other information. Our method, matrix subspace projection, is much simpler than previous approaches to latent space factorisation, for example not requiring multiple discriminators or a careful weighting among their loss functions. Furthermore our new model can be applied to autoencoders as a plugin, and works across diverse domains such as images or text. We demonstrate the utility of our method for attribute manipulation in autoencoders trained across varied domains, using both human evaluation and automated methods. The quality of generation of our new model (e.g. reconstruction, conditional generation) is highly competitive to a number of strong baselines.

2019 A Stable Variational Autoencoder for Text Modelling
abstract
Variational Autoencoder (VAE) is a powerful method for learning representations of highdimensional data. However, VAEs can suffer from an issue known as latent variable collapse (or KL loss vanishing), where the posterior collapses to the prior and the model will ignore the latent codes in generative tasks.Such an issue is particularly prevalent when employing VAE-RNN architectures for text modelling (Bowman et al., 2016).In this paper, we present a simple architecture called holistic regularisation VAE (HR-VAE), which can effectively avoid latent variable collapse.Compared to existing VAE-RNN architectures, we show that our model can achieve much more stable training process and can generate text with significantly better quality.

2018 Statistical NLG for Generating the Content and Form of Referring Expressions
abstract
This paper argues that a new generic approach to statistical NLG can be made to perform Referring Expression Generation (REG) successfully. The model does not only select attributes and values for referring to a target referent, but also performs Linguistic Realisation, generating an actual Noun Phrase. Our evaluations suggest that the attribute selection aspect of the algorithm exceeds classic REG algorithms, while the Noun Phrases generated are as similar to those in a previously developed corpus as were Noun Phrases produced by a new set of human speakers.W 10-12 ⇒ [direction] [speed] WS 22-24 ⇒ [direction] [speed]

2017 Investigating the content and form of referring expressions in Mandarin: introducing the Mtuna corpus
abstract
East Asian languages are thought to handle reference differently from English, particularly in terms of the marking of definiteness and number. We present the first Data-Text corpus for Referring Expressions in Mandarin, and we use this corpus to test some initial hypotheses inspired by the theoretical linguistics literature. Our findings suggest that function words deserve more attention in Referring Expression Generation than they have so far received, and they have a bearing on the debate about whether different languages make different trade-offs between clarity and brevity.

2016 Statistics-Based Lexical Choice for NLG from Quantitative Information
abstract
We discuss a fully statistical approach to the expression of quantitative information in English. We outline the approach, focussing on the problem of Lexical Choice. An initial evaluation experiment suggests that it is worth investigating the method further.
