Warping-Based Stereoscopic 3D Video Retargeting With Depth RemappingabstractDue to the recent availability of different stereoscopic display devices and online 3D media resources (e.g. 3D movies), there is a growing demand for stereoscopic video retargeting that can automatically resize a given stereoscopic video to fit the target display device. In this paper, we propose a warping-based approach that can simultaneously resize and remap the depth of a stereoscopic video to produce a better 3D viewing experience. Firstly, our method computes the significance map for each stereo video frame. It then performs volume warping using non-homogeneous scaling optimization to resize the stereoscopic video. A depth remapping constraint is used to remap the depth and a constraint is applied to preserve the significant content during warping process. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in preserving the significant content, ensuring motion consistency, and enhancing the depth perception of the retargeted video sequences within the comfort depth range. | 2018 | Cellular Music: An Interactive Game of Life SequencerabstractCellular Music is an algorithmic sequencer based on the rules of Conway's game of life presented as an interactive audio based installation. The installation uses a camera to detect motion in space and uses this data as seeds for the game of life algorithm. The algorithm runs on a 20x20 grid with 20 iterations of the algorithm visualised in individual layers, creating a cubical grid of 20x20x20 cells. Cells are mapped to musical pitches and scanned to generate music. Anis Haron, Soon Xuan Yong, Chee-Onn Wong

TAGapp Visualization: An Application Based Visual Art Installationabstract"TAGapp Visualization" is an interactive visual art installation, which can be set up easily at any TAGapp related venue such as event, galleries and museum. The interaction of TAGapp visualization is mobile application, audiences can download the application into smart device. The features of the application are information retriever, indoor navigation and positioning. Audiences obtain the information by a very natural gesture, TAGapp visualization will display the journey of every individual audience. After download the application, audience have to generate their own account and pick the color, so the visualization will display the sphere according to what the audience pick. Each sphere represent each audience. TAGapp will track the visiting journey of every single audiences and stored into the database and all these actions would determine the visual component of the visual art. Besides that, the uses of this art installation can help the event, galleries and museum management. This real-time participatory interactive visual art enable to connect with the audiences' behavior. Soon Xuan Yong, Chee-Onn Wong, Kong Cheng Tan, Anis Haron

Aesthetics-Driven Stereoscopic 3-D Image Recomposition With Depth AdaptationabstractDue to the availability and affordability of the stereoscopic equipment (e.g., stereo camera, lens, and display devices), stereoscopic image manipulation has been receiving considerable research attention in recent years. In this paper, we present a semiautomatic, aesthetic-driven stereoscopic image recomposition approach, which capacitates the change of the spatial position of the foreground object(s) in a given stereoscopic image to enhance human visual aesthetics. Our algorithm recomposes both the left and right stereo images simultaneously using a global optimization algorithm. To maximize image aesthetics, our algorithm minimizes a set of aesthetic quality errors, which is derived from selected photographic composition rules. In addition, depth adaptation is applied to the resized objects and change in vertical disparity of the resulting stereo image pair is minimized to ensure a pleasant three-dimensional (3-D) viewing experience. Our method can be used to perform stereoscopic image retargeting and recomposition simultaneously by providing the target image scale as the input. Empirical evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in enhancing the aesthetics of stereoscopic 3-D images. Notably, depth adaptation is shown to play an important role in aesthetics enhancement. Md Baharul Islam, Lai-Kuan Wong, Kok-Lim Low, Chee-Onn Wong

The Invisible: Bacteria EverywhereabstractThis interactive artwork uses augmented reality on mobile devices to portray the concept of bacteria is everywhere around us. The installation set up will show an aesthetic interactive design of common bacteria types found in every day's items. Interactive android application is built using Augmented Reality (AR) technology with a 3D display of the bacteria found each time the mobile devices scans an identified item that is commonly found around us. Users can manipulate the bacteria's behavior by simulating a different condition for the bacteria and visualize in 3D format of the aesthetic behavior of the bacteria. This project is suitable for digital advertising as well as an educational exhibition booth to attract the interest of the youngsters who are technology savvy. The overall installation utilizes the 3D concept and interactive manipulation of the controlling parameters to simulate bacteria's behavior and visualize in an aesthetic manner with 3D visual arts. | 2015 | The harp of light: a musical string projection mappingabstractThe Harp of Light is a creative installation that uses string projection mapping to simulate an aesthetic visual corresponding to beautiful sound of a harp. The installation mimics a harp with strings that receives projection mapping of digital visuals that is aligned to the live interaction from audiences through natural based interactive means. The main contribution of this artwork is an attempt to provoke an emotional experience through a highly realistic simulation of an acoustic harp sound and a hepta-symmetrical visual generated from natural interaction from the audiences creatively projected on strings. The set-up of this creative installation creates a fresh and colorful ambience that gives the audiences a digital look-and-feel of musical tone through the projected chords. A novel combination of various creative technologies has been used to create The Harp of Light. Goh Wen Shyan, Brian Kan-Wing Mak, Chee-Onn Wong, Tan Yee Lyn, Tey Zi Ming

| 2006 | Facial Expression Recognition for E-learning Systems using Gabor Wavelet & Neural NetworkabstractIn this paper, we present our initial studies and results obtained on e-learning facial expression recognition using Gabor Wavelet for facial feature extraction, and Back-propagation Neural Network for expression classification. An eFEC database that consists of 600 facial expression images is built for our research. We also provide reasons on why we need to build our own database instead of customizing and use current available expressions database, and what are the differences between eFEC databases compared with others. You may find comparisons in various experiment results presented. We believe the information would be very useful as to provide guideline and direction on how to improve the system performance and make it applicable in real-life elearning environments.
