| 2023 | Flex Meta-Storms elucidates the microbiome local beta-diversity under specific phenotypesabstractMOTIVATION: Beta-diversity quantitatively measures the difference among microbial communities thus enlightening the association between microbiome composition and environment properties or host phenotypes. The beta-diversity analysis mainly relies on distances among microbiomes that are calculated by all microbial features. However, in some cases, only a small fraction of members in a community plays crucial roles. Such a tiny proportion is insufficient to alter the overall distance, which is always missed by end-to-end comparison. On the other hand, beta-diversity pattern can also be interfered due to the data sparsity when only focusing on nonabundant microbes. RESULTS: Here, we develop Flex Meta-Storms (FMS) distance algorithm that implements the "local alignment" of microbiomes for the first time. Using a flexible extraction that considers the weighted phylogenetic and functional relations of microbes, FMS produces a normalized phylogenetic distance among members of interest for microbiome pairs. We demonstrated the advantage of FMS in detecting the subtle variations of microbiomes among different states using artificial and real datasets, which were neglected by regular distance metrics. Therefore, FMS effectively discriminates microbiomes with higher sensitivity and flexibility, thus contributing to in-depth comprehension of microbe-host interactions, as well as promoting the utilization of microbiome data such as disease screening and prediction. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: FMS is implemented in C++, and the source code is released at https://github.com/qdu-bioinfo/flex-meta-storms. Mingqian Zhang, Wenke Zhang, Shunyao Wu, Xiaoquan Su |

| 2021 | A New Password- and Position-Based Authenticated Key ExchangeabstractPassword-based authenticated key exchange is a popular method for secure authentication and key exchange. With the wide application of unmanned aerial vehicles, position information has also become an important factor in authentication. In this paper, we present a new key exchange protocol, which firstly realizes dual authentication for both password and position, and we propose two applicable scenarios for the PPAKE mechanism: one is unmanned aerial vehicle authentication, and the other one is authentication in the military base. By adding position authentication, the reliability of authentication has improved, and the difficulty of adversarial attacks also increases. Any arbitrary adversary who can listen, tamper, and send messages can only perform an online attack for password guessing at a specified position. Finally, we provide security proofs under the defined model. Jia Fan, Lanfei Qiao, Yunfei Cao, Shanglin Liu, Wenke Zhang |

| 2018 | Mining E-Commerce Query Relations using Customer Interaction NetworksabstractCustomer Interaction Networks (CINs) are a natural framework for representing and mining customer interactions with E-Commerce search engines. Customer interactions begin with the submission of a query formulated based on an initial product intent, followed by a sequence of product engagement and query reformulation actions. Engagement with a product (e.g. clicks) indicates its relevance to the customer»s product intent. Reformulation to a new query indicates either dissatisfaction with current results, or an evolution in the customer»s product intent. Analyzing such interactions within and across sessions, enables us to discover various query-query and query-product relationships. In this work, we begin by studying the properties of CINs developed using Walmart.com»s product search logs. We observe that the properties exhibited by CINs make it possible to mine intent relationships between queries based purely on their structural information. We show how these relations can be exploited for a) clustering queries based on intents, b) significantly improve search quality for poorly performing queries, and c) identify the most influential (aka. »critical») queries whose performance have the highest impact on performance of other queries. | 2010 | Kernel-based Approaches for Collaborative FilteringabstractIn a large-scale collaborative filtering system, pair wise similarity between users is usually measured by users' ratings on the whole set of items. However, this measurement may not be well defined due to the sparsity problem, i.e., the lack of adequate ratings on items for calculating accurate predictions. In fact, most correlated users have similar ratings only on a subset of items. In this paper, we consider a kernel-based classification approach for collaborative filtering and propose several kernel matrix construction methods by using biclusters to capture pair wise similarity between users. In order to characterize accurate correlation among users, we embed both local information and global information into the similarity matrix. However, this similarity matrix may not be a kernel matrix. Our solution is to approximate it with the matrix close to it and use low rank constraints to control the complexity of the matrix. | 2008 | Data Integration for Recommendation SystemsabstractThe quality of large-scale recommendation systems has been insufficient in terms of the accuracy of prediction. One of the major reasons is caused by the sparsity of the samples, usually represented by vectors of userspsila ratings on a set of items. Combining information other than userspsila ratings can provide the learning model complementary views of the data and, thus, a more accurate prediction. In this paper, we propose efficient methods for finding the best combination weights among single kernels. The weight parameters are optimized by aligning the combination kernel to ideal kernels. We solve the kernel alignment problem by linear programming techniques. Zhonghang Xia, Houduo Qi, Manghui Tu, Wenke Zhang |
