2025 MyoChallenge 2024: A New Benchmark for Physiological Dexterity and Agility in Bionic Humans
abstract
Recent advancements in bionic prosthetic technology offer transformative opportunities to restore mobility and functionality for individuals with missing limbs. Users of bionic limbs, or bionic humans, learn to seamlessly integrate prosthetic extensions into their motor repertoire, regaining critical motor abilities. The remarkable movement generalization and environmental adaptability demonstrated by these individuals highlight motor intelligence capabilities unmatched by current artificial intelligence systems. Addressing these limitations, MyoChallenge '24 at NeurIPS 2024 established a benchmark for human-robot coordination with an emphasis on joint control of both biological and mechanical limbs. The competition featured two distinct tracks: a manipulation task utilizing the myoMPL model, integrating a virtual biological arm and the Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL) for a passover task; and a locomotion task using the novel myoOSL model, combining a bilateral virtual biological leg with a trans-femoral amputation and the Open Source Leg (OSL) to navigate varied terrains. Marking the third iteration of the MyoChallenge, the event attracted over 50 teams with more than 290 submissions all around the globe, with diverse participants ranging from independent researchers to high school students. The competition facilitated the development of several state-of-the-art control algorithms for bionic musculoskeletal systems, leveraging techniques such as imitation learning, muscle synergy, and model-based reinforcement learning that significantly surpassed our proposed baseline performance by a factor of 10. By providing the open-source simulation framework of MyoSuite, standardized tasks, and physiologically realistic models, MyoChallenge serves as a reproducible testbed and benchmark for bridging ML and biomechanics. 2023 MyoDex: A Generalizable Prior for Dexterous Manipulation
abstract
Human dexterity is a hallmark of motor control behaviors. Our hands can rapidly synthesize new behaviors despite the complexity (multi-articular and multi-joints, with 23 joints controlled by more than 40 muscles) of mosculoskeletal control. In this work, we take inspiration from how human dexterity builds on a diversity of prior experiences, instead of being acquired through a single task. Motivated by this observation, we set out to develop agents that can build upon previous experience to quickly acquire new (previously unattainable) behaviors. Specifically, our approach leverages multi-task learning to implicitly capture a task-agnostic behavioral priors (MyoDex) for human-like dexterity, using a physiologically realistic human hand model – MyoHand. We demonstrate MyoDex’s effectiveness in few-shot generalization as well as positive transfer to a large repertoire of unseen dexterous manipulation tasks. MyoDex can solve approximately 3x more tasks and it can accelerate the achievement of solutions by about 4x in comparison to a distillation baseline. While prior work has synthesized single musculoskeletal control behaviors, MyoDex is the first generalizable manipulation prior that catalyzes the learning of dexterous physiological control across a large variety of contact-rich behaviors.

2023 RoboHive: A Unified Framework for Robot Learning
abstract
We present RoboHive, a comprehensive software platform and ecosystem for research in the field of Robot Learning and Embodied Artificial Intelligence. Our platform encompasses a diverse range of pre-existing and novel environments, including dexterous manipulation with the Shadow Hand, whole-arm manipulation tasks with Franka and Fetch robots, quadruped locomotion, among others. Included environments are organized within and cover multiple domains such as hand manipulation, locomotion, multi-task, multi-agent, muscles, etc. In comparison to prior works, RoboHive offers a streamlined and unified task interface taking dependency on only a minimal set of well-maintained packages, features tasks with high physics fidelity and rich visual diversity, and supports common hardware drivers for real-world deployment. The unified interface of RoboHive offers a convenient and accessible abstraction for algorithmic research in imitation, reinforcement, multi-task, and hierarchical learning. Furthermore, RoboHive includes expert demonstrations and baseline results for most environments, providing a standard for benchmarking and comparisons. Details: https://sites.google.com/view/robohive

2022 MyoSim: Fast and physiologically realistic MuJoCo models for musculoskeletal and exoskeletal studies
abstract
Owing to the restrictions of live experimentation, musculoskeletal simulation models play a key role in biological motor control studies and investigations. Successful results of which are then tried on live subjects to develop treatments as well as robot aided rehabilitation procedures for addressing neuromusculoskeletal anomalies ranging from limb loss, to tendinitis, from sarcopenia to brain and spinal injuries. Despite its significance, current musculoskeletal models are computationally expensive, and provide limited support for contact-rich interactions which are essential for studying motor behaviors in activities of daily living, during rehabilitation treatments, or in assistive robotic devices. To bridge this gap, this work proposes an automatic pipeline to generate physiologically accurate musculoskeletal, as well as hybrid musculoskeletal-exoskeletal models. Leveraging this pipeline we present MyoSim - a set of computationally efficient (over 2 orders of magnitude faster than state of the art) musculoskeletal models that support fully interactive contact rich simulation. We further extend MyoSim to support additional features that help simulate various real-life changes/diseases, such as muscle fatigue, and sarcopenia. To demonstrate the potential applications, several use cases, including interactive rehabilitation movements, tendon-reaffirmation, and the cosimulation with an exoskeleton, were developed and investigated for physiological correctness. 2006 Bayesian Propagation for Perceiving Moving Objects
abstract
In this paper we address the issue of how form and motion can be integrated in order to provide suitable information to attentively track multiple moving objects. Such integration is designed in a Bayesian framework, and a Belief Propagation technique is exploited to perform coherent form/motion labeling of regions of the observed scene. Experiments on both synthetic and real data are presented and discussed.

2005 Image segmentation via multiresolution diffused expectation-maximisation
abstract
Multiresolution diffused expectation maximisation performs segmentation on vector (e.g. color) images within a multiscale framework; segmentation is carried out via the expectation maximisation algorithm, coupled with anisotropic diffusion on classes, in order to account for the spatial dependencies among pixels.
