Users' Content Memorization in Multi-User Interactive Public DisplaysabstractIn this study, we investigate users’ content memorization in interactive public displays that can be simultaneously used by multiple persons. We designed a system in which interaction would enhance users’ content memorization, and that allows multiple users to collaborate on interaction. We installed the system in a university campus and conducted a field study on passersby. We interviewed the users who continued interacting with the system to reach or pass a certain phase, and evaluated users’ content memorization from the accuracy of displayed information that was unconsciously memorized. As a result, the users who interacted with the display had a significantly higher correct answer rate for detailed questions about the displayed information than those who only watched a video on the display, which suggests that our interactive public display resulted in better content memorization. It is also shown that displayed information was efficiently delivered to many users by enabling multiple persons to interact with the display. | 2020 | Dynamic layout optimization for multi-user interaction with a large displayabstractIn this paper, we propose a user interface that allows multiple users to obtain information interactively and to operate the interface simultaneously on a large display. Users can interact with the display using hand gestures, which enables many users to easily use the system from a distance. In order for each user to effectively use the screen and also not to be interfered with by other users, the system dynamically optimizes the layout of the screen. We created a prototype system and conducted an experiment to compare the proposed interface with those without optimization. The results showed that the participants were able to obtain more information per unit time using the proposed interface. Moreover, the participants were less hurried or frustrated, and felt less interfered with by other users. Yoshio Matsuda, Takashi Komuro

A Design for the 178-MHz WXGA 30-fps Optical Flow Processor Based on the HOE AlgorithmabstractWe propose an optical flow processor, which allows real-time processing of WXGA 30-fps at 178.3 MHz. By introducing the SOR method and a pipeline operation for the Gauss-Seidel method to the iterative flow calculation, computational complexity can be reduced to 14.5% when compared to the previous HOE processor. We decreased the area of the embedded memory by using the image division method, applying line memory, and optimizing the computation word length. The core size of the designed processor is 16.82 mm2 in 90 nm process technology, which is approximately 5% of the previous HOE processor. The processor can operate completely in parallel, which ensures high-resolution scalability. Tetsuya Matsumura, Aoi Kurokawa, Kousuke Imamura, Yoshio Matsuda

The LSI implementation of a memory based field programmable device for MCU peripheralsabstractA Field Programmable Sequencer and Memory (FPSM), which is an embedded memory based programmable device for peripherals on micro controller units, has been proposed at the architecture level. The FPSM functions not only as the memory but also as finite autonomous state transition controls independent of the CPU. In this paper, implementation on the LSI is described. The FPSM, fabricated using 180-nm 1-poly and 5-metal CMOS process technology, operates at the maximum frequency of 61.5 MHz with a power supply voltage of 1.8 V. The power consumption is 1.0 mW per programmable unit at the target frequency of 50 MHz. The performance of fundamental peripherals such as timers, shifters, serial receivers/transmitters, FIFOs and Pulse Width Modulations (PWM) are evaluated and verified. | 2014 | Increase in Read Noise Margin of Single-Bit-Line SRAM Using Adiabatic Change of Word Line VoltageabstractA single-bit-line (BL) static RAM (SRAM) circuit that employs adiabatic charging of a word line during a read operation was found to provide a large dynamic noise margin (DNM) for reading. Single-BL reading is achieved by using a left access transistor and a shared reading port. The shared reading port greatly reduces the BL capacitance, enabling the voltage of the BL connected to the low-voltage node of the flip-flop to change from the precharge voltage to GND. An analysis of the time-wise change in DNM revealed that the read noise margin of this circuit was 1.9 times larger than that of a conventional two-BL circuit. This circuit enables the design of an SRAM that is smaller than a conventional one, resulting in lower energy consumption. | 2010 | Adiabatic SRAM with a shared access port using a controlled ground line and step-voltage circuitabstractAn adiabatic 64-kb SRAM circuit with shared reading and writing ports was designed, which enables gradual charging and discharging while maintaining a large VDD so that the problems of VTvariation and electromigration in the nanocircuit can be solved. In the writing mode, the voltage of the memory cell ground line is increased to VDD/2 gradually, and the nMOSFET is turned off so that the memory cell ground line is set in a high-impedance state. Data can then be written easily by decreasing the voltage of one bit line adiabatically, while the voltage of the other bit line remains high. For reading, using the shared reading port, the voltage swing of the global bit-line can be decreased to VDD/4 so that the problems of electromigration can be solved. The reading method enables a gradual current flow in the memory cell. We designed the cell layout and confirmed that the number of transistors in the cell is quasi-six. In addition, two types of new step voltage circuits with tank capacitors are proposed. One is for producing the memory cell ground line voltage and the other for charging the word line voltage adiabatically. Spontaneous step voltage formation is confirmed experimentally. | 2009 | Adiabatic SRAM with a Large Margin of VT Variation by Controlling the Cell-power-line and Word-line VoltageabstractAn adiabatic 1-kb SRAM circuit was designed, which enables gradual charging during writing and reading while maintaining a large VDD so that the problems of VTvariation and electromigration in the nanocircuit can be resolved. In the writing mode, the voltage of the memory cell power line is reduced to ground gradually using a high-resistivity nMOSFET, and we turn off the nMOSFET so that the memory cell power line is set in a high-impedance state. Then, we can write data easily by inputting adiabatic signal from one bit line, while the other bit line is set to ground. For reading, a verifying operation is proposed for resolving the electromigration problem. The word line voltage is changed stepwise while the voltages of the bit lines are verified. The reading method enables a gradual current flow in the memory cell. We designed the cell layout and found that there is no area penalty. In addition, a new charge recycle circuit with tank capacitors is proposed. Shunji Nakata, Takahito Kusumoto, Masayuki Miyama, Yoshio Matsuda

Scalable Shared-Buffering ATM Switch with a Versatile Searchable QueueabstractThe shared-buffering architecture is promising to make a large-scale ATM switch with small buffer size. However, there are two important problems, namely, memory-access speed and complex-control implementation. Advanced 0.5 /spl mu/m CMOS technology now makes it possible to integrate a huge amount of memory, and enables us to apply more sophisticated architecture than ever before. We propose the funnel-structured expandable architecture with shared multibuffering and the advanced searchable-address queueing scheme for these two problems. The funnel structure gives a flexible capability to build various sizes of ATM switches which are proportional to the number of LSI chips. The searchable-address queue, in which all the addresses of the stored cells for different output ports are queued in a single-FIFO hardware and the earliest address is found by the search function provided inside the queue, can reduce the total memory capacity drastically, and enables the address queue to be contained inside the LSI chip. This technique also has a great advantage for implementing the multicast and multilevel priority-control functions. A 622 Mbit/s 32/spl times/8 ATM switch LSI chip set, which consists of a BX-LSI and a CX-LSI, is developed using 0.5 /spl mu/m pure CMOS technology. By using four chip sets, a 622 Mbit/s 32/spl times/32 switch can be installed on one board. | 1994 | Multicast Function and its LSI Implementation in a Shared Multibuffer ATM SwitchabstractThere are several schemes to provide multicast function in an ATM switch. The authors have proposed a new multicast scheme in a shared buffering ATM switch. They discuss the cell-loss performance of ATM switch to compare various schemes. Computer simulation shows that this scheme achieves the best cell-loss performance and has a great advantage in the buffer size. Implementation of an LSI chip set and a 622 Mb/s 8/spl times/8 ATM switch board is also explained.> Hirotaka Saito, Hideaki Yamanaka, Hirotoshi Yamada, Munenori Tsuzuki, Harufusa Kondoh, Yoshio Matsuda, Kazuyoshi Oshima

A New Array Architecture for Parallel Testing in VLSI MemoriesabstractThe authors describe a novel array architecture and its application to a 16-Mb DRAM (dynamic random-access memory) suitable for the line mode test (LMT) with test circuits consisting of a multipurpose register (MPR) and a comparator. The LMT can test all memory cells connected to a word line simultaneously. Testing with random patterns along a word line is easily realized by using the MPR as a pattern register after setting random test data in the MPR. Test time is reduced to approximately 1/1000. Owing to the MPR, the present LMT can achieve flexible testing with high fault coverage. The excess area penalty due to the circuits for the LMT is suppressed within 0.5% in application to the 16-Mb DRAM.> Yoshio Matsuda, Kazutami Arimoto, Masaki Tsukude, Tsukasa Oishi, Kazuyasu Fujishima
