2025 H-LDM: Hierarchical Latent Diffusion Models for Controllable and Interpretable PCG Synthesis from Clinical Metadata
abstract
Phonocardiogram (PCG) analysis is vital for cardiovascular disease diagnosis, yet the scarcity of labeled pathological data hinders the capability of AI systems. To bridge this, we introduce H-LDM, a Hierarchical Latent Diffusion Model for generating clinically accurate and controllable PCG signals from structured metadata. Our approach features: (1) a multi-scale VAE that learns a physiologically-disentangled latent space, separating rhythm, heart sounds, and murmurs; (2) a hierarchical text-to-biosignal pipeline that leverages rich clinical metadata for fine-grained control over 17 distinct conditions; and (3) an interpretable diffusion process guided by a novel Medical Attention module. Experiments on the PhysioNet CirCor dataset demonstrate state-of-the-art performance, achieving a Fréchet Audio Distance of 9.7, a 92% attribute disentanglement score, and 87.1% clinical validity confirmed by cardiologists. Augmenting diagnostic models with our synthetic data improves the accuracy of rare disease classification by 11.3%. H-LDM establishes a new direction for data augmentation in cardiac diagnostics, bridging data scarcity with interpretable clinical insights.

2020 Robust Hybrid Cooperative Positioning Via a Modified Distributed Projection-Based Method
abstract
Cooperative positioning is attracting an increasing amount of attention due to its ability to enhance the accuracy and availability of positioning performance. Current algorithms for cooperative positioning are sensitive to the initial guess as a result of their nonconvex objective functions, which is especially true in hybrid wireless networks. Perfect a priori information about the locations is needed, which is rather problematic in many scenarios. With strong convergence, the iterative parallel projection method (IPPM) is extended to hybrid wireless networks (H-IPPM) in this paper. Motivated by the fact that normal weighted methods cannot achieve the optimal solution, the position uncertainty is modeled, and two distributed weighted parallel projection algorithms, namely, an inexact weighted algorithm called the HBFW-IPPM and an exact weighted algorithm called the HCPW-IPPM, are developed when considering both the range measurement errors and position uncertainty. Experiments in a realistic outdoor scenario are conducted. The results indicate that the exact weighted algorithm HCPW-IPPM shows superior and robust performance in both warm-start and cold-start conditions, and this is true even when non-line of sight (NLOS) measurements and weight estimation errors are taken into account.

2016 Optimizing Bulk Transfers with Software-Defined Optical WAN
abstract
Bulk transfer on the wide-area network (WAN) is a fundamental service to many globally-distributed applications. It is challenging to efficiently utilize expensive WAN bandwidth to achieve short transfer completion time and meet mission-critical deadlines. Advancements in software-defined networking (SDN) and optical hardware make it feasible and beneficial to quickly reconfigure optical devices in the optical layer, which brings a new opportunity for traffic management on the WAN.

2016 Compact Conformal Map for Greedy Routing in Wireless Mobile Sensor Networks
abstract
Motivated by mobile sensor networks as in participatory sensing applications, we are interested in developing a practical, lightweight solution for routing in a mobile network. While greedy routing is robust to mobility, it may get stuck in a local minimum, which then requires non-trivial recovery methods. We find an embedding of the network such that greedy routing using the virtual coordinates guarantees delivery, thus eliminating the necessity of any recovery methods. Our contribution is to replace the in-network computation of the embedding by a preprocessing of the domain before network deployment and encode the map of network domain to virtual coordinate space by using a small number of parameters which can be preloaded to all sensor nodes. As a result, the map is only dependent on the network domain and is independent of the network connectivity. Each node can directly compute or update its virtual coordinates by applying the locally stored map on its geographical coordinates. This represents the first practical solution for using virtual coordinates for greedy routing in a sensor network and could be easily extended to the case of a mobile network. The paper describes algorithmic innovations as well as implementations on a real testbed.

2013 Compact conformal map for greedy routing in wireless mobile sensor networks
abstract
Motivated by mobile sensor networks as in participatory sensing applications, we are interested in developing a practical, lightweight solution for routing in a mobile network. While greedy routing is robust to mobility, location errors and link dynamics, it may get stuck in a local minimum, which then requires non-trivial recovery methods. We follow the approach taken by Sarkar et. al. [24] to find an embedding of the network such that greedy routing using the virtual coordinates guarantees delivery, thus eliminating the necessity of any recovery methods. Our new contribution is to replace the in-network computation of the embedding by a preprocessing of the domain before network deployment and encode the map of network domain to virtual coordinate space by using a small number of parameters which can be pre-loaded to all sensor nodes. Being extremely light-weight, greedy routing on the virtual coordinates is shown to be very robust to mobility, link dynamics and non-unit disk graph connectivity models.

2013 BabyTalk: Understanding and Generating Simple Image Descriptions
abstract
We present a system to automatically generate natural language descriptions from images. This system consists of two parts. The first part, content planning, smooths the output of computer vision-based detection and recognition algorithms with statistics mined from large pools of visually descriptive text to determine the best content words to use to describe an image. The second step, surface realization, chooses words to construct natural language sentences based on the predicted content and general statistics from natural language. We present multiple approaches for the surface realization step and evaluate each using automatic measures of similarity to human generated reference descriptions. We also collect forced choice human evaluations between descriptions from the proposed generation system and descriptions from competing approaches. The proposed system is very effective at producing relevant sentences for images. It also generates descriptions that are notably more true to the specific image content than previous work.

abstract
We posit that visually descriptive language offers computer vision researchers both information about the world, and information about how people describe the world. The potential benefit from this source is made more significant due to the enormous amount of language data easily available today. We present a system to automatically generate natural language descriptions from images that exploits both statistics gleaned from parsing large quantities of text data and recognition algorithms from computer vision. The system is very effective at producing relevant sentences for images. It also generates descriptions that are notably more true to the specific image content than previous work.

2011 Multifocal learning for customer problem analysis
abstract
In this study, we formalize a multifocal learning problem, where training data are partitioned into several different focal groups and the prediction model will be learned within each focal group. The multifocal learning problem is motivated by numerous real-world learning applications. For instance, for the same type of problems encountered in a customer service center, the problem descriptions from different customers can be quite different. Experienced customers usually give more precise and focused descriptions about the problem. In contrast, inexperienced customers usually provide diverse descriptions. In this case, the examples from the same class in the training data can be naturally in different focal groups. Therefore, it is necessary to identify those natural focal groups and exploit them for learning at different focuses. Along this line, the key development challenge is how to identify those focal groups in the training data. As a case study, we exploit multifocal learning for profiling customer problems. Also, we provide an empirical study about how the performance of multifocal learning is affected by the quality of focal groups. The results on real-world customer problem logs show that multifocal learning can significantly boost the performance of many existing classification algorithms, such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs), for classifying customer problems and there is strong correlation between the quality of focal groups and the learning performance.
